Due to cutbacks they will no longer publish their findings online.

We'd probably be better off having the IMF come in and sort out the mess. The politicians don't have the balls.

An Bord Snip was an agency the government set up to find areas in need of cutback in the public sector. No doubt they found many, and there will be many millions € worth of cuts introduced.
    It's released its report today.

I said this ages ago, we need to let the place go t*ts up altogether, we are incapable of sorting this out for ourselves. I personally think we should increase ALL public sector pay, let's f*ck the place up right and proper, then we can expect the IMF to come over and sort this place out for once and for all...

It pisses me off, everytime I switch on RTÉ the past months some hack's been rabbiting on about this an bord snip nua....jesus eithere As Gaelige or in English, not the two combined.

Anyway, this is going to be the real budegt that we didn't see in either Oct '08 or April '09 and I expect the same people are going to get shafted even further while several financial elephants are left to freely wander around the room sh*tting on the rest of us...

Most likely the usual way: get a couple of consultants costing many thousands of euro over a 3 month period.

    =-=

Most likely they'll say we need to cut X. X will then strike, and X will then get more money. Usual sh|te.

It's a pity the government never thought of trying to make an agreement with the unions to accept the recommendations of report prior to it's release. However, if there's no balls implementing this, there should be a ****ing revolution tbh. The recession is gonna last forever.

Y'see, the problem with the staff cuts figures include introduction of obligatory unpaid overtime for doctors and nurses. Bad idea.

In short? They won't be. Not all anyway.

The first thing they'll do is cut Civil Service/Public Service pay. By publishing this report without prior consultation with Unions the government has implemented a strategy whereby the public (private sector workers) and press will demonise public sector workers, leaving them no option (they hope) to take these cuts lying down. Any pay cuts will be untenable for the vast majority of public sector workers and strike action will have to be considered, even though these people probably can't afford to go on strike. Imagine striking Public Sector unions in that kind of climate?

I can't see the government being very willing to impliment much of this, there will be massive public opposition to it.

Some people don't seem to get that it's just a report/recommendations. They think it's all happening tomorrow...

I think we should abandon the whole monetary system and return to a complicated semi-feudal caste system based around bartering of goods and services.

Some other things not mentioned in the snip (:pac:) above:
The group says the Department of Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs should be closed and its functions redistributed.

It also says the need for the Department of Arts, Sports & Tourism should be critically examined and the programme expenditure of both departments should be significantly scaled back.

It recommends reducing the number of Local Authorities from 34 to 22.
Closing the CRGA department is a good idea. It might get rid of the moron O'Quiv.

Cutting all those public sector jobs = more people on the dole getting rent allowance, family income supplement, medical cards etc but I guess it's a net saving all the same.

I think it's about time the number of councillors was cut. In these parts anyway they don't do much to warrant their ridiculous pay packets.

Wouldn't mind a few TDs being sacked either, there are grossly overpaid and to add insult to injury heard of one who has employed half their family in various administrative positions.

An Bord Snip Nua proposed a total of 6,000 or thereabouts in staff cuts for the HSE, not 540...

It's there in the report. RTE were off their rocker in saying that just 540 jobs would go...

I'd rather a list of realistic suggestions that save a substantial amount of money over a populist wage cut that'd achieve nothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,848 ✭✭✭bleg

A reduction in the pay for the TDs, Cabinet, reduced number of junior ministers (or abolish them) and reduced pay for sitting on Dail committees are all decisions that better be made.

Also take the pensions off the sitting TDs. If any of them have the cheek to take it to court see what the people do.

In fairness some of the cuts have been as low 0.5m. The cuts in my post could easily exceed 5 times that number.
