    yep my thoughts exactly!

3 stations showing the EPL in Ireland now!

    Sky - €60ish
    EPSN - €15ish
    Setanta Ireland - €15ish

€90-100ish to watch all the live games from home!

how the hell can setanta afford them

ffs their barely able to keep themselves going in the he first place

did anybody else even bother bidding

the likes of sky or ESPN would have blown setanta out of the water

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 129 ✭✭dougdub

looks like a one horse race not even RTE or TV3 bothered by the sound of it!

Sky and ESPN know they will suck us in witj their current packages.

I'd imagine the only bidders were Setanta and RTE with the winning bid being less than a million euro per year, perhaps even less.

if setanta is anything over 5 euro I wont be signing up

    gutted

I am happy to hear that they have kept them. If it means that Setanta Irleand continues because of this then great. But they must reduce their montly cost.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 129 ✭✭dougdub

As i said on the other Setanta thread it will be reduced to €15ish on Sky from what i've been told.

Seen some suggestions of €5 a month which I doubt as Sky need to take their cut which is up to 50%.

Virgin in the UK where taking 85% of any revenue from Setanta GB.

My initial thought is great, an Irish company has survived a bashing and come out the other side still broadcasting!

But when reality sets in, if the prices quoted are right, to get the football that cost(if you paid the full price)€21.99 last season will cost approximately €27 per month this season!!!! That assuming Setanta €15 and ESPN €12 .

I think for Joe Soap in Ireland it will be a case of Sky plus ESPN or Setanta . Whereas once we had Sky, now we have three companies offering bits of the same product!! Not good

From what I understand Sky may take control of subscriptions and have it as an add on to there package. its all hazy at the moment.

So I pay annually around September time (I think).

Will the Setanta annual sub come down or does anyone know yet?

Setanta is completely seperate to Sky. Sky take no cut. Setanta will pay for the EPG slots and that's it.

How much for this package per month via Sky Mossy?

To be honest that line up of matches is not worth €20 a month. Think ill do without.

At the moment you pay €21.99 per month directly to Setanta if you wish to view them via satellite. Sky do not feature in the transaction at all.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 867 ✭✭✭gpjordanf1

Are these games going to be shown on Setanta Ireland or Setanta 1 or a mix of both?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,329 ✭✭✭Manc-Red

Ah man I can't believe these idiots have won the rights - Was hoping ESPN would do it, if its 20 quid a month they can go & shi*e.

i was told that no subs are being taken for july

there is a drop in the monthly charge on the way but he didn't say how much

it is being announced offically in the next week or so......

have seen elsewhere that it will be around €15 per month from now on......

they were waiting to see if they got the rights for the 3 p.m. games first before they comitted to the charge.....

so am I right in thinking that all the football setanta have is going to be a 3pm game.

Have they lost their games for sat 5.45 and monday nite?

Nobody does. No one is allowed to broadcast Saturday 3pm games in the UK. It is against the law

ESPN have the Saturday evening and Monday night games. Setanta only have Saturday 3pm games.

    That is not quite correct...

No-one can broadcast in the UK. at 3 p.m...

Setanta Ireland can broadcast in Ireland live at 3 p.m. ....

    They always have....

    From The Setanta website:

Setanta Ireland Secures Saturday afternoon Barclays Premier League Games for next Season
Setanta Sports announced today that they have been awarded the rights by the Premier League to show up to 33 live 3pm Saturday games in the Republic of Ireland next season. The addition of these Premier League games to Setanta’s live sports programming has been warmly welcomed by the broadcaster. Niall Cogley CEO of Setanta Sports Ireland commented “We are delighted to announce our success in winning back Saturday afternoon Barclays Premier League games for next season. Traditionally this has been the most popular and best performing slot for us of all of our sporting rights. “We anticipate a high level of quality this season with 9 of our first 13 games featuring Top 4 teams including Manchester United at Wigan on Aug 22nd and Liverpool visiting Bolton on Aug 29th. Our opening game will see Carlos Tevez spearheading the new look Manchester City who kick- off their season at Blackburn.” Cogley went on to add “Although there has been some confusion about Setanta Sports in Ireland following recent developments in the UK we are now delighted to confirm that we will continue to provide our subscribers with the best value premium sports service in Ireland and the most attractive sports option for all television advertisers.” In addition to the Barclays Premier League, sports fans tuning into Setanta can continue to see live Magners League, Champions League, the new Europa League, Formula 1 and golf including The Augusta Masters and Padraig Harrington’s historic title defence at this week’s Open Championship as well as our domestic staples including the Setanta Sports Cup & Eircom League, the Allianz Leagues, and schools rugby.

There is no way that is worth 15 euro a month. Why couldn't setanta just fold ffs...

If ESPN got the 3pm games I may have got that. Not by the looks of things neither station have value for money.

If Racing UK comes bundled with it then it is value. Racing UK is £20 on it's own now in the UK.

In my opinion Setanta should pitch at €7.99 per month and ESPN at €10.99 for Sky subscribers. At that price,Setanta should get a good few subscribers and ESPN I am not sure about. At those prices, a premier league fan could subscribe to SS1(with one mix), Setanta and ESPN for approx. €61.00.. Jeesus thats expensive though...and thats cutting it down to the wire.Imagine taking all the mixes, multiroom,hd etc...!!

ESPN wont be €10.99. It is £12 for Sky subscribers in the UK.

according to the indo its worth 750k for the rights and tv3 and tg4 bid but rte did not. according to the irish times its worth 4million and sky was the underbidder.........i posted the links in another thread.
cant belived 5th choice 3pm kickoffs were setantas highest rated matches though????

was hoping setanta wouldn't get these, as it is going to cost a fortune now for all the footie...will still likely cancel setanta and head for the pub for the games they carry i want to see..

Another probable issue for Setanta relates to the fact that there are a lot of non Sky subscribers who are subbing to Setanta using boxes where the card doesn't actually match the box. AFAIK the old cards will die at end of August. How are these people going to get new cards? Neither sky or setanta will give you one. And I think any new white cards these people source will have to match the box to view the Setanta channels this time. Interesting and potentially awkward.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 444 ✭✭mburke

According to the irish times they just have the rights to next season, the bidding for the three seasons from August 2010 will be auctioned from September.

In a way it is a gamble for setanta as they might not get the 3pm games from 2010 onwards, what then for the group.

Their pricing will be interesting as Sky & ESPN have HD versions of their channels, last year the setanta pictures were terrible from certain games.

Good point. They must have some sort of deal in place. It is suicide if they refuse to send out replacement viewing cards.

I always thought the picture on Setanta Ireland was ok. Setanta Sports 1 however was always a pixellated mess.

20 pound on its own is scandalous. And what about the people who don't watch horse racing like me, where is the value in paying setanta 15 euro a month?

I mean they have lost any decent programmes they had like football matters and all the foreign leagues and SPL.

Got the following response from Setanta:

To reflect the recent change in our content on Setanta Sports, we will be sending out correspondence to all existing customers before the end of this month, confirming our future content and our new price point. This has yet to be decided, but I can confirm that your annual subscription will be significantly lower this year.

I do hope you'll continue to enjoy our great sporting content over the next year, including Champions League and Europa League games this season as well as our Live Barcalys Premiership matches.
