Right, I'm heading to Crunch in TB today, and I'm gonna see what the best deal is I can get it.

Anyone got any tips for haggling? I'm quite shy.... :)

As a general rule of thumb if there is haggling involved,

Ask for 20% off the best offer? and settle for 10% if you get 15% off its a good deal.
If your getting other people to sign up ask for more of a discount.

See if you can find any other gym that has similar facilities (Northwood is often good as a comparision, it has a pool as well as big cardio and weights section, costs €325), and say that you are torn between the two gyms, but the price difference is pushing you towards the cheaper one. Ask them if they can reduce the price enough to allow you to join them.

You need to borrow Wifepants. She's the best haggler I've ever seen. She spoke to the manager in TF Castleknock and got him to agree to 3 months free when she renews in a couple of weeks because she was sick last year and missed loads of her membership. She also got €50 off mine too! This was 2 weeks ago so we need to go back to him this week (membership's up now) so I'll be bringing her in in case he tries to hoodwink me.

Going on hols to places with markets is a nightmare, she haggles things down to ridiculous levels. I can't stand it, I just wanna pay and get out but I suppose it's nice to get a 75% discount off a fake polo shirt.

I'd say speak to the manager not some numpty at reception.

Waiting for the "I wonder how she got the manager to agree to that ;)", "I bet prices aren't all he dropped" replies...

I've also got gyms to extend my membership for a couple of months if I paid in cash.

At the worst, you could say that you are considering building a home gym and reckon you could do it for X amount.

:D That's just brilliant. Can't beat watching a 15 minute haggling match over a 4euro Rholex watch, in which time the price gets down to 30c and then she decides she doesn't actually want it, leaving the poor bloke there looking suicidal. Story of Lanzarote right there.

    Yeah, I've a success story.

Place I wanted was wayy too expensive and didn't have what I needed in terms of facilities but was the closest I could find. Tried haggling in Jan but they didn't care.

Waited 4 or 5 months until they had a 25% off special offer and went in. Asked for a free swim in the pool to help me decide. The dude said ok.

Then after I gave him this torn hungry orphan look and made out like I loved the place but really hadn't got the dough and could he knock it down by 50 (didn't say knock down by 50 I asked could he do X).

Worked and I paid way less than the post-Christmas fat shedders for my 1 year!

Fair play to your missus there kev.

I have it on hearsay that TF are willing to offer a year's membership for 300 quid if they're really pushed.
Ask yer man we know in there and see if there's any truth to it..i'll be playing the poor mouth this year and no mistake.

A guy I know got TF down to €290 yesterday. There's lots of room for negotiation there.

Really reckon it's a good idea mentioning a trainers name like that on a public forum?? Sounds like ya could land him in a spot of bother.

    Is that for full membership?.

I'm not saying your friend is a liar, but I find that hard to believe.

I'm pretty good when it comes to haggling a good deal, I've recently renewed my membership with TF and short of putting a gun to their heads they weren't moving on the price of €549-.

Next time you will know to bring the gun ;)

Is there anybody who has renewed and haggled by saying they rarely go there? Perhaps this guy did rarely go and they can offer him a better deal seeing as he will not be expected to be there.

yeah i go to westwood and i'm 99.9% sure their policy is not to give a reduced monthly rate. When i was in Canada it was ridiculous, if you go to a gym they let you use it for 2 weeks for free, when you join you can haggle them down to about half the price, and they'll give you 3 or 4 - 3 month passes for your pals.
