Beer Belly

    hey there, im looking for a bit of advice. My auld lad is up near the 50 mark now and he's gotten the middle age beer belly despite being quiet active and not being a big drinker. He hasn't a notion of going anywhere near a gym. Any tips on how he can loose it? I'v a rowing machine and a decline bench and my sister has a cross trainer, should he just give these a go or is there anything else he could also do? Thanks in advance!

    Any exercise is good, lots of walking would be a good start, then graduate to the rower and cross trainer. Does he have any weights to go with the bench?

    Getting rid of a beer belly comes to down diet. It takes a massive amount of work to exercise it away (he still needs to exercise to be healthy). Generally, a good start is to get rid of all the junk (anything with transfats or sugar), and to replace most of the white carbs with green vegetables.

    it all depends how much he is willing to change but replacing white with brown (rice, bread, etc) and reducing portion sizes might be less drastic and more sustainable in the long term ... Green veg are great though!!!

    Yep we have a set of dumbels alright!
    His diet isnt the worst in fairness to the man but I suppose it'll have to improve now anyway

    Unfortunately, as you get older, you can get away with less wiggle in your diet. A 20 year old can eat pizza a couple of times a week, and it just results in better workouts. A 50 year old who tries to do the same thing just puts it onto his belly. Maybe get him to come on here and get some information about how to improve his diet?

    maybe get him to keep an honest food diary for a week

    come where with the results and folk will tell you where he can improve

    most people who think they have a "not too bad" diet turns out to be awful including myself!

    folk here will put him on the right track.

    +1 to that .. In fact, a lot of people could eat pizza every day in their 20's and maybe 30's - even people who dont do any exercise but it eventually starts to catch up .. to the OP - his diet probably isnt as good as it may seem as it is not that easy to put on excess weight eating 100% cleanly (even if the portions are large) ...
