Got hit by a ... taxi

On my way into work this morning ... I got hit by a car ... no wait: a taxi.
I was on the roundabout going to take the 3rd exit and a car entered the 2 'exit' and hit me right on the front wheel. I slid, bike hit the roundabout curb, I am not sure how I managed to get unharmed because the impact was quite brutal... I stood up ... all shook up. Both my wheels are very buckled, I am scratched, bruised, shocked ... the frame seems ok.
The cab said he didn't see me on time and didn't expect me to be riding that fast. He offered to give me a lift to work ... when i got in the car, I took a photo of his cab reg and ... he said' let's just go to the police station.
I am glad I am ok, I am a bit sore but I am fine. I am taking the bike into cyclelogical so they can tell me the damage. The taxi driver said, he'd be happier paying for the damage to the bike than going through his insurance. He was very nice and sorry and embarassed ...

My poor fixie ... I a still a bit shocked...

Anyway, I was wearing my helmet - thk god for that. I think I am getting better at falling :)

    Be vigilant out there!

That sounds a bit rough. Good that you're okay.

Roundabouts really are a lottery in this country

    Glad you are ok.

Roundabouts are particularly tough, people just don't look,or indicate, or do anything.

Hi Caroline, Sorry to hear about your trouble, but I suppose the main thing is that you're OK. By the sound of it, had the potential to be a major injury situation !

The cab said he didn't see me on time and didn't expect me to be riding that fast.

People always seem to under estimate how fast we can go.

    Hope you are OK!

I rarley cycle through roundabouts myself. I'd much prefer to walk along them... even if i am just going straight through.

Glad you are ok! Sounds like a nasty alright! Did you check the frame for cracks or anything?

There's a large roundabout (motorway overpass, 4 lanes on each arm) beside my place and I will only take 1st or 2nd exit, never the 3rd because it's far too dangerous. Call me a wuss but it's just too big for a driver to spot a cyclist going round.

Glad your ok and hope the bruises heal soon!

Actually, just remembering this now, but when I was coming back from my thursday spin I was taking the 3rd exit at the sandyford roundabout (closer to M50 side of Bewleys) and I got the traffic coming off the M50 at the second exit. Some muppet in a Volvo S80 pretty much merged as I was passing, so I ended up getting pinned in the outside lane as I was coming off. Managed to cross once the traffic had passed thankfully as he was taking the same exit as me.

Sorry to hear that. Nice to see he owned up and took responsibility. Did you go to the Garda station in the end?

Sorry to hear you were taken out of it, get well soon and hopefully there's no residual damage going to crop up in a day or two.
I can't believe you had the guts to get into the car with him then afterwards, having just seen how 'good' his driving was, there's no way in hell I would have. I hope he didn't charge you either!

Sorry to hear of your accident. I know the taxi driver said he'd prefer to settle directly, but get your Garda statement anyway. What people say at the scene of accidents and what they do afterwards can be two different things, as I learnt.

Glad it didn't turn out bad like it sounds like it could've done and great to hear that you're feeling OK at the moment, but I echo Lumen's comments that it might take a while to really understand the impact, at least until the adrenaline wears off.

My sister was hit by a taxi years back and the damage to her back only became apparent a couple of days later. Not scaremongering, just suggesting that you get checked out by a doc if you feel even the slightest twinge. Good luck!

Unfortunate accident. Probably best, as you've outlined, to handle it by logging it with gardai and then let him pay for a replacement bike. As long as you're not injuried eveyone's happy.

Sorry to hear that, Caroline, but glad you're alright, and +1 on what GhostRider and Lumen said.

Scary business, hope you heal up soon.

Do go to the doctor and get yourself checked out just in case.

If he is being decent about it then that is good and no need to screw him over, just let him pay for the damages.

Do not however under any circumstance sign anything about it being in full settlement as injuries may manifest themselves later.

    Glad you're ok.

I'd give him/her a chance to pay for it themselves. If they don't answer calls or you think they're avoiding you get on to the Insurance Company. I've seen it so many times where they have the best intentions and own up to it but later they speak to family or friends and all of a sudden you can't get in contact with them.

You can report it to the Insurance company and if he/she pays the claim themselves it doesn't affect their insurance in any way.

    Best of luck.

I would get checked out by a doctor. I've heard from a fair few people in accidents who said they felt fine at the scene but only experienced pain later. Shock can mean that you don't feel anything initially.

    Caroline. Hope you are ok.
Good to hear that the driver has taken responsibility.

+1 on the medical exam just do it.

Re the shock, once you settle down, you should get back on the bike asap.

Have been here a few months back and it is not nice.

    Stay safe.

    Thanks all :)
I am not sore, just painful road rash. If i am sore in the morning, i will go to the doc.

I took the bike to cyclelogical, and they had a good look at it. The frame is fine, both wheels are buckled beyond repair, so I got a quote for a new pairs of wheels .. and new bar tape. 275Euro. That could have cost the cab much more if i have been on my road bike.
Now I just need to get on to him and we'll see. There is a record at the garda station and I know where he lives.

I have never had problems at roundabouts before, I cycle them as i would when i drive ... and I always always signal and look behind.

replace them with Zipps, then put them on your road bike.

Typical car dirvers, dont realise people can cycle at 30km+, they drive out thinking they wont get hurt cause its only a cyclist. If it was a forty foot lorry going at the same speed he wouldnt drive out as quick.

Roundabouts... hard enough for cars but for bikes they are pretty dangerous.

Not just because car drivers can not use them but cyclists also. I was in Tullamore yesterday and approached a roundabout with 4 exits (5 including mine) its a decent enough roundabout and its single lane so not like walkinstown. Anyway the car in front me me moves off and takes the 2nd exit (not straight through in this case) when a cyclist bombs past me on the left (I am now at the line) and proceeds to try and overtake (undertake) on the roundabout (going straight through so 3rd exit in this case) only to be almost creamed by the car as he exits! It was madness. Nothing to do with the original poster, I am just pointing out how crazy roundabouts are for drivers and cyclists alike as few people actually know how to use them. the cyclist should have stayed behind the car in front of him.

I bet when you walked in you had to hold back from asking for a lend of a pump!

Sorry to hear about your accident, hope you're okay, and as you've said, no harm in seeing a doctor if you're not 100% to-morrow, from my own experience after a motorcycle accident it might take a day or two to feel the soreness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,414 ✭✭✭✭Trojan

Glad you're ok, I'd say it was quite a shock at the time. How soon can you get the wheels? Last I heard there was a 2 week delay on the Cyclelogical workshop (popular despite their zero tolerance approach :))!

There should be more public education on to cycle and how to drive around cyclists, especially that they can be moving very fast in traffic.

Glad you're Ok Caroline_ie. Roundabouts are a mare esp when drivers go all the way around them on the outside that happens to me all the time. I do think most drivers think cyclist = 3mph.

Sorry to hear that Caroline. But glad it wasn't worse. Roundabouts do seem to be a total free-for-all for some people. They freak me out even when I'm driving. Get well soon, and buy yourself a treat.
