Galway are red-hot favourites going into this. For one, we struggled past them last year when they were basically just Joe Canning plus 14, this year they have the likes of Kavanagh, Lynch, Cullinane and Lee excelling, have a proper manager and destroyed Clare at a canter with Joe Canning doing nothing.

Cork on the other hand, have a rookie manager, still don't have a center forward line, don't have a forward on the level of Joe, have a rookie full back to mark him, have an out of form center-back, lack the physicality of Galway throughout the pitch and will have to rely on fecking Timmy McCarthy to stop John Lee from playing.

    Or, Cork are ****ed.

Another bloody Saturday for a Galway hurling match. Third in a row! Gah. Work rules me out of going so.

Cork (at senior level) could send out 15 gombeens and would still make Galway nervous. Galway *are* better this time around, mainly because Gerlock is gone; however it looks as if Cullinane, one of the better players from last year's debacle, will be out for a while - his possible replacement Ger Mahon is frightening for Galway. Cork have had plenty of rookie managers who prospered, Damien Hayes is off-formish and Niall Healy only got the scores v Clare when the game was won. Agree with you re Timmy though, seems to get taken off in every match.

Wouldn't agree entirely with you there; full-back is a rookie alright but he was outstanding against Tipp (got Man of the Match). Not having a forward on the level of Joe is something you could say about every other county in the country. Asaike could be primed to explode on Saturday, you never know.
Galway are deserved favourites alright but it will be close.

Cadogan got MOTM against one of the least talented inter-country hurlers ever, its meaningless. God only knows what Canning will to him, we will have two men on him for the whole game while will be half the battle lost.

There'll always be the cute corkonians building up the opposition! Galway hopefully will still remember last year and the 2005 final and will be reved up from the start! Hopefully Kevin Hynes and Eoin Lynch will have a massive game!

Now I know Orizio is only at he's usual pre-match shenanigans but he's right here Cadogan beat Webster now if that qualifies you to mark Joe Canning then there is something wrong in the world of hurling, I would say there are huge question marks still over Cadogan, although having Brian Murphy back alongside will be a help

This is the key imo, Galways midfield cost them the game against KK despite the fact that only one KK midfielder was hurling well, they were slightly better against Clare, but they will need to improve again for Galway to progress.

Its even more important with the usual game plan Cork have. If you watch the Cork attack they usually like to run in through the middle of midfield and then around the center back so if we have Lynch, Hynes and Lee on form then Galway will completely shutdown Cork! They will have to rely on high balls into the full foward line and with Kavanagh playing good and Canning and Fergal Moore either side they'll be up against it!

Shane Murphy is out injured now, Ben O'Connor and John Gardiner likely to be out as well. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 330 ✭✭davestar

Galway are not without injury worries themselves. Wing back Adrian Cullinane was forced off with a knee injury in last Saturday's win over Clare and is anxiously awaiting the results of an MRI scan he underwent yesterday.

Team captain Ollie Canning is also a concern after coming off against Clare with blurred vision.

However, team captain John Gardiner, who was a late withdrawal before the Offaly match, has returned to full fitness.

Galway may have injuries, but they have the depth to deal with them. Cork don't.

Damien Hayes is the one who is lucky to be there imo, but dont be suprised if the open space in thurles sees him back to form, the two fields that Galway have played in , tullamore and ennis, wouldnt have been ideal for a guy who trives on open space.

Is Iarlath Tannion still on form at the minute? He'd be a good adition to the physicality of the full foward line.

not particularly . mahon wasn't exactly a satisfactory replacement for one of the best corner backs in ireland(ollie canning) . likewise it will be very hard to replace ben o c .

I might be wrong but did I not read about him having an injury, would consider him as a better half forward also.

i'm not sure . yes true . what happened to kerril wade ?

Cork should be naming their team tonight btw. Apparently, Timmy Mac, Ben and Kenny also struggled in training.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,506 ✭✭✭MfMan

I'd take all Cork injuries with a pinch of salt!!;) Iarla Tannion is out for the year with a cruciate, no concrete word yet on Cullinane. Galway's panel isn't as deep as some would believe. Bit surprised Kerril Wade hasn't yet gotten a recall but I'm sure enough approaches were made. Ditto Mark Kerins who's going well for the 'bridge at the moment.

when all this(qualifiers and quarters) is over can anybody see past a tipperary and kilkenny final ? i can see galway beating kilkenny is the semi's as they seem to be the only team who put it up to them . on the downside we all know of galway's inconsistancy which might prove costly against cork or even waterford past that . which i can't see cork or waterford beating kilkenny . waterford in particular after what happened last year . it looks like kilkenny unless galway can change their ways in this stage of the championship and have a consistant year . as for the other side i can't see limerick(who will beat laois) or dublin getting past tip .

    opinions please ???

I think Cork will need Ben O Connor playing if they are too defeat this Galway side. His abense would be a disaster for the rebels, who rely on his scores. Cork have an extra weeks break which might help them though. Hard to call. If Cork have O'Connor i think they'll win, if hes out i'll go for a Galway win.

When and where can we get tickets in Galway?

A question for all the Galway fans............

Why is it that at any given hurling game which involves Galway, the maroon and white are always outnumbered at least 3:1 by opposition fans?? Sometimes its even more. Is it because Galway didn't have a proper provincial championship in Connaught, so therefore a large core base of supporters was more difficult to establish?

I can remember Limerick playing Galway in U21 finals in both 2000 and 2002. Both attracted an attendance of around 30k, and id say both times Limerick fans outnumbered Galway fans by 6 or 7 to 1. The football fans seem to travel in large numbers so why is it that the hurling fans dont?

    What gives?

(This isn't a slight on any Galway fan or anything, i know there are plenty diehard and knowledgable Galway hurling folk out there, i'm just curious to know.)

well i was in cusack park saturday to see the clare match and i was really surprised at the amount of fans there,...maybe we just made more noise but it sounded like there was as many galway fans there even at the start when it was an even match.
I think joe canning and the likes will bring more galway fans to hurling matches. Im for both football and hurling but to be honest i only recently became a big supporter of the hurlers...you have to realize though that the football population is much more than the hurling in galway too

whats with the ,granted the laois -limerick match wont be the same standard as the galway-cork game but as a laois man i have to say the hurlers and the managment team are a credit to the county, they put in the same commitment and time as any team, they took there beating agaisnst galway like men no complaints ,went back to training and turned antrim, limerick will probably have too much but they will give it a go.as hurling people surley we want teams to progress to compete with the top teams instead of a teams hanging on to kilkennys coat-tails ,up the o,moores-ill get down of my box now:)

    Good on ya.
It would be great to see Laois beating Limerick and i hope it happens not that i've anything against Limerick!
Who knows in the coming years if Laois put serious work into underage now they could rise to a new level. Also if Wexford and Offaly return to their former standards in the coming years the Leinster championship couls be just as good as the Munster championship.
At the moment you have Kilkenny on there own there with Galway and Dublin behind them and then Wexford, Offaly and Laois on the same plane! Its a bit disheartening when you see the hurling strongholds like Offaly and Wexford faid but who knows with a good bit of investment by the GAA hurling could get a second birth!

Hayes has been very disappointing, seems totally off-form. If he's still off colour on Saturday they should take him off as he contributed very little in the last two games.

Niall Healy is a player living on reputation, loads of talent and ability but seldom produces the goods when it's needed. We need more from him.

Laois are not on the same level as Offaly and Wexford. They're a bit short of that I'm afraid. Either of Offaly or Wexford would expect to beat Laois by at least 10-12 pts.

    Difference of opinion i suppose!
I personally wouldn't be really surprised if Laois bet either of them in the coming years on their current form anyway!

They might do (though I doubt it), but that's more to do with Wexford and especially Offaly slipping down the ranks rather than anything Laois have done. Galway scored 5-29 against Laois a few weeks ago which tells you that they're still a long way short of being able to compete against the better teams. I couldn't imagine Galway putting 5-29 on Wexford could you?

    dont drink either

whats the big deal i passed a comment that this will whet the appetite in a sarcastic way, some moaner from laois gets on the case good for him, i'm just giving my opinion it'll be about as good as a junior club match.

I didnt see a problem with your 'whet the tongue' post. It was your second one that I didnt like :P
But you have to understand that there is limerick supporters (and laois ones) that are going to watch this match as their 'main' match so just dont be so negative :)

just curious, are you comparing limerick or laois' play to junior club standard? Or both teams?

All the Galway-Dublin trains go through Tullamore. Why do you want to go to Tullamore anyway? Nothing on there.

Well it's true that there is probably about 20 hurling teams in the country worse than Laois, but that says more about the overall standard of hurling than it does about Laois.

Technically not even close Orizio, Im pretty sure any of the top colleges teams would beat them, Portumna, Ballyhale, alot of the top u-21 teams, the second and even third string of the stronger counties. Now if you had have said they have one of the top 10 inter-county senior teams that would be a different arguement altogether ;)
