I'll be backing Goosen to win it and having an e/w bet on McIlroy. As for Harrington, he'll probably shoot a nightmare on Day 1 and then a half decent round on day two to scrape in. He'll play out the final two days towards the tail of the field.

I have picked Martin Kaymer on here from the start of the year where we all picked our Major winners for the season... not so sure now that he has won the last 2 weeks... can he keep up that form?????
Tiger the obvious choice... Duval as usual and I think Harrington will do more than ok.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,239 ✭✭✭mag

i think mcdowell is a decent e/w bet

I'm with you there, mag, and wouldn't discount either Ben Curtis or Duval. I reckon Kjeldsen is worth a flutter too.

I reckon Kjeldsen is worth a flutter too.

Likewise and at 100/1 great value

best of the oirish will prob be GMAC i'd say

Don't write Harrington off just yet, he's had a nightmars for sure but if you think he is going to give up easily well then you don't know the man. I will put a few quid on him each way as I believe he will put me through every emotion possible. He is still one of the most exciting golfers to watch. If the shot is there no better man to attempt it. I'm not saying he will win but give him a chance even a small one.:)

sergio is going to finally get a major in the bag ....harrington each way bet for sure

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 706 ✭✭✭BoardsRanger

I dont think harrington will do well at all. I watched him down at the european club and although he won it, he seemed not to be hitting the ball well at all. Alot of his shots seemed like high hooks! Also, he seemed to have no confidence with any of his woods. Hence he was not useing them very often, he used an iron on the long par4 7th which, im sure, had he been hitting them well, he wood have used a 3 wood/driver.
All that said, i do hope he pulls something out of the bag and makes the cut!

I think Hunter Mahan will win it. Will have a few cheeky each way bets on David Toms, Jusin Leonard, Olvier Wilson and Johan Edfors.

watch him walk slowly over to the rough then..

feel free to swap the word "rough" for "water"

paddy is washed up - he needs time off, simple as

Harrington tees off at 14:20 with Jim Furyk and Geoff Ogilvy.Should be a good threeball to follow.

Id love to see westwood win a major, he doesnt have much of a track record in the open but he's had 2 big finishes (2nd and tied 8th) the last 2 weeks so hes showing some form. 32/1 on betfair, he'll be my main hope this week.

Tiger averages roughly one major a year so id be surprised if he doesnt take either this or the uspga but theres no point backing him at short ante post odds. As usual if he brings his A game (or probably just his B game) he'll win but he's been up and down this season so we'll just have to wait and see what sort of score he posts on thursday.

Finally Harrington. Form wise he doesnt have a hope and the odds of going 3 in a row are huge but if he scrapes his way into contention come sunday he'll always be the danger man even if hes not playing his best game. WATCH OUT SERGIO!!!:D

I think Adam Scott might do quite well, if he gets his putting in order.

Poulter for me,after watching Harrington saturday and Goosen yesterday they have no chance.

    My 2 main bets are
    Sergio Garcia 25/1
    Paul Casey 33/1

    2 outsiders bets are
    Kenny Perry 66/1
    Darren Clarke 200/1

But I hope Nick Watney wins! :)

Have good value ew bets on Soren Hansen & Soren Kjeldsen, and took 50-1 on Kaymer before he won at the weekend...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,416 ✭✭✭Jimmy Iovine

In my opinion Padraigs recent dodgy form is all an act. Hes pretending to play bad so he can lull everyone into his trap and it seems to be working. Dont forget hes done it before, the "sore wrist" last year and "poor performance on friday" at the PGA. Hes doing the same now but at a grander scale because the stakes are higher, Open hat-trick, 4th major. Expect him to scrape past the cut at the weekend and then have a huge surge in form at the weekend.

In all seriousness though if his putting can improve and he hits a few fairways he cannot be written off come Sunday. Hes shown he can win down the back-nine at a major and if somehow he gets in that position even against Tiger he can be expected to get the job done. Hes got the fire in the belly sure.

As for Woods, he is the favourite and rightly so but I can see him struggling with the length of the rough unless he uses irons and woods or has the best driving week of his career.

My outside bet is Brian Gay at 100/1. Hes 4th in driving accuracy and 5th in putts per round, scoring average and sand saves. Could place high enough if he does well in those categories.

My money is on in-form Hunter Mahon. Powers have him at 30/1....surely an each way bet...especially when they are paying 7 places!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 281 ✭✭jimmystars

I think Paddy needs the wind to play havoc with the field as he probably has the best attitude to play in those conditions and that would eliminate 3/4 of the fieldas they dont have experience of dealing with it. He also has had a couple of weeks head start on most of the field in prep for links golf so i wouldnt rule him out .His form hasnt been great for a while but that is only temporary as his class will bring him out on top again at some stage and i would love to see it happen this wekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41 nadasky08

Heard McIlroy and McDowell on BBC 5Live there. Both played the course a month ago and again last week three times before the Scottish Open and both seemed very happy with their chances. Think it might be just a year too early for Rory but McDowell has the game for Turnberry IMO!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,146 ✭✭✭Morrisseeee

My humble 2 cents: I'm really looking foreward to it, the last 2 have been brilliant (obviously) !
As always its a tough call, there are some many in with a chance, but there's always a few who manage to play themselves into a fighting chance on the last day, Woods, Harrington, Furyk, Westwood, Garcia, Els etc. I reckon Woods & Harrington are best watched as 'betting in running'. Clarke is a big outside EW bet, I could also see McIlroy making the top 10, he's having a great year. McDowell has links experience but seems to fade out of contention at the business end. Feherty was 4th here in 1994 so maybe that bodes well for the NIR lads ! Who cares as long as we have an Irish winner !! Both Casey & Poulter have good records, but are they capable of handling the pressure on the last day (if in the lead) ?! I'll back McGrane at big odds, just because.............! Also Major winners at big odds: Cabrera (70/1) & Mike Weir (100/1).
Also checking out 1st round 3-balls: Clarke 6/4 to beat Donald & Yano, Villegas 11/10 to beat O'Hair & Ikeda, Kaymer 7/5 to beat Els & Glover, Hansen 2/1 to beat Leonard & Allenby, McIlroy 7/4 to beat Goosen & Kim, Poulter 11/10 to beat Holmes & Jimenez, McGinley 6/4 to beat Daly & Petterson.
Previous (Big name) Winners at Turnberry, (so will we have another?):
    1994 - Nick Price 268
    1986 - Greg Norman 280
    1977 - Tom Watson 268

Thats what i think. If i had the liathroidi i would have bet on his to win. Have been nothing but impressed with the guy since the Ryder Cup and really think that if he had look in the last round in Bethpage then he would have won

All my bets, €3 each way

    Hunter Mahan 33/1
    David Toms 80/1
    Soren Kjeldsen 100/1
    Geoff Ogilvy 40/1
    Oliver Wilson 125/1

before placing a few bets was wondering if anyone has got a reputable weather forecast for the open
especially the 1st 2 days as each side of the draw can vary hugely ala bethpage

My money is on Woods, and I'll be betting with Boyles. Paying 8 places and giving a €40 Free Bet

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,335 ✭✭✭conno16

jim furyk never wins nothing outside his own back garden
    make sure you go e/w

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,416 ✭✭✭Jimmy Iovine

just to let people know Harrington and McIlroy are going for 40/1 each with Ladbrokes and I wouldnt say itll stay like that for much longer

Furyk may have won little in the last year or two but his back garden has hosted at least 13 PGA touraments (including a major) of which he has won, lot to be said for local knowledge !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 168 ✭✭Jeffm587

May regret posting this but I really fancy David Drysdale as a good rank outsider e/w bet , 350-1 , he has a few top ten finishes this year and of course he's not from a million miles away

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,080 ✭✭✭kenco

I think it is there for Woods to lose unless the weather really turns which I think is unlikely

McDowell, Edfors and Westwood I reckon will also go well

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 78 ✭✭as125634do

    woods nice 12/5

    harrington ew

    els ew

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,653 ✭✭✭kingshankly

I have a couple of pound on mayhan and stricker each way
but the value bet has to be tiger at 13/5 this is incredible value considering mickleson doesn't play, the second fav is the biggest bottler in golf, the defending champion can't hit a ball any more.
I have woods as a 6/4 shot, sure he might not win but he is some value at 13/5 and I for one will be lumping on

It's like a gambling joint in here. Anyone actually got any interest in the Open itself rather than making money? So boring reading odds and what bets have been placed.
Did anyone bet on Lucas Glover winning the US Open? Goes to show the point of gambling

Rather than having a whinge about people not talking about the golf, how about actually offering your opinions/thoughts on what you think is going to happen?

Well, they'll be a cut line, a few shocks missing the cut. A chance of a treble, and hopefully lashing rain with high winds. That's my thoughts, cos it's hard to really tell what can happen at these things.

So, in other words, you think there's nothing worth talking about pre-Open, but you still want to have a bitch about nobody talking about the Open. Riiiiiight!

Anyway, Robert Rock e/w at 250-1 has caught my eye. Other than that i'm gonna hold off and see how things are shaping up on Friday. Have a hunch about Poulter and a certain tempramental, podgy Scotsman.

Westwood, just birdied first 3 holes and missed a 6 footer to make it 4 in a row. Playing with woods who is still level.

Very surprised it isn't available in HD, poor display from the BBC.
