The Below thread explains it all.
Not sure if you would be able to get any good pics.I gave a 70-300mm sigma.
Does anyone think I could get anything other than a dot.

With the rain and clouds over me now, I can't see anything. Mad rain and clouds.

It would be interesting to see any results for this though.

Well you're obviously not going to get any detail, but if you leave the shutter open for say 30 seconds, you'll get a line rather than a dot.

Saw it head over the other night, didn't have time to get the camera out though.

saw the shuttle pass over last November (I think). there was a segment on Newstalk about the shuttle at the time and said it was to pass over at a certain time from due West.
Got the binoculars out and spotted it easy enough - could just about make out the numbers on the wing :-)

no seriously though - it was just a white dot that blazed across the sky!

Times for the ISS here, (for my location, go back to the home page and plug yours in for more accuracy), the Shuttle will start off 20/30 minutes later when it launches, and gradually catch up, the exact times will be on heavens-above once it launches.

Did this not happen at half ten already?

looks like it's been delayed again for weather reasons. Not having a lot of luck with this one.

Plus the ISS has passed over.

If its clear there is a good opportunity to see it tonight at 22.51, the sky should be dark enough and the crossing is high in the sky.

Great shot whyulittle!! Congrats on getting Pix.ie's Twitter of the day!

Not a hope of getting a clear sky in Galway unfortunately.

Don't despair yet, there's a clearer slot out west might make it in to you.

Just a heads up that this looks like it's set to go tonight! Launch will be at 11.03pm, and passing Ireland a few mins either side of 11.20pm . Get your tripods at the ready if you've a clear sky! ;)

The international space station will then pass, a bit higher in the sky, at 11.43pm.

Both will be tracing a west->east route (approx).

Your going to be as disappointed as I am with this one, camera was in the wrong mode completely and I wanted to see it with my own eyes anyway ! but here it is. One of the blurry lines is the shuttle, the other must be the booster breaking away.

I managed to get this shocking poor pic. Combination of "blood hell thats fast", sh1t camera it point wrong direction and then couldn't reach for the remote release :(

But it was cool as fook :D

could see it perfect over the curragh, man it was moving. very visible to the naked eye

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

Interesting to note that the main tank's booster appeared to be so far below the shuttle itself...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 219 ✭✭32finn

prob cos of the actual size of the shuttle maybe

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

Here's my attempt (some minor ps was done - the sky was way too bright in the original).

Funnily enough, I just saw something just like it again when i was going out to the car for something, is it making revolutions or is it the ISS maybe ? I would think the reason the two were so far apart was the the seperation of the tank and shuttle ?

I also took a (very poor) picture of it.

    1zd3rf5.jpg

Went by very fast. Was only visible for about 15 seconds or so before it vanished up out of view.

Some great pics! Was out in the garden outside Dundalk, but I think it went past right where there was a bank of cloud. Did manage to see the ISS though

The ISS passed over about 5 minutes afterwards.

And they're retiring the space shuttle very soon now - don't know if we'll see it again.

On the plus side, the European Space Agency is working on their space mule as the shuttle replacement.
