Another solid week in the bag, 67+ miles, 8.5+ hours, 37 consecutive days, over the 2k mark for the year and 2 easy races.

Dublin Half pacing leaving the tragedy to one side (RIP) was a great morning. I think between us we done a done a great job and helped many hit their targets. The bunch at 1:40 was larger than last year and less talkative, maybe the unseasonably warm day had a lot to do with that.
Knew at the top of military hill that things did not look great and with Garda bikes and Ambulances heading in that direction it was never a good sign. Myself and Joe tried to keep our group on track and not get distracted and we rallied them for the final few miles.

As I drove down to Annacurragh this morning I was reflecting on yesterday's events and was considering the role of a pacemaker and potential implications! Should we just run a steady pace, keeping the group informed and motivated and not get involved in pushing people. What would the outcome be if a participant that you told 'don't give up, keep pushing, give it everything, only a mile to go' collapsed? Something to consider?

Annacurragh this morning was a fantastic setting, went on a nice 10k loop with Slogger before registration and then decided late to run the race also. Challenging loop, with a knock the stuffing out of you climb on each lap, reckon it could become a regular fixture.

Big mileage week coming up and then we're into a few weeks of XC.

JC = Jesus Christ, or someone even bigger? Abhainn, resurrected from the 'dark side'?
What's the reasoning behind the 102 mile week?

Yes the multisport man has returned to the light.

Why - the perfect storm maybe?

    1. Felt like it, first 100 mile week in 30 years.
    2. Last chance to nail down an endurance week before Dublin.
    3. This week was Children's Cancer awareness week and the job were donating money for each employee who ran or walk a mile. I challenged my team to run or walk more than me!

Was tired towards the end of the run today, but actually feel surprisingly alright!

Well 7:21mins of this week went according to plan until the the final 2 mins as I was ramping up to take a few extra spots in today's Novice XC.

Plan was some easy running after last week's 100+, let the body recover, regain some sharpness with a few strides and tip over 60 miles in the process.

A big field gathered for the Novice XC today by Wicklow standards, haven't seen the results yet, but guessing 40+.
Looking at the start line I didn't put myself in the top 10 and I can't think of many with a top 10 chance that stayed away from this one.
The course was challenging, undulating, with some tight twists and turns, you could call it a technical XC course. But the main problem was that it was just a random field, not suitable for running really, lots of divots with both buried and loose rocks.

Got a good start in the downhill melee, this was on purpose with a tight turn about 200 into the race and after the 1st uphill section I settled back in about 12th. Was running pretty steady, letting gravity do the work on the downhills and working hard on the uphills and straights.
Took a few places on the climb to the finish line after a lap and a bit and without feeling like I was upping the pace reeled in a few more over the course of the lap, making sure when I passed someone that I passed them with pace.
Going through the finish with 1 small lap to complete, got into a nice battle with a young lad from Parnell and a clubmate. Worked hard up the hill and pulled away and strided out on the downhill. Clubmate worked hard and came level with me and we're working hard to reel in another Parnell runner.
About 500 to go - BANG! stood on a rock with my heel on a steep downhill section, rock flipped and my left ankle turned over. I let out a yell and several expletives as I bounded down the hill trying not to land heavily on my left. Thought about stopping, but by the time I got to the bottom of the hill there was only about 400 to go. Grimaced through the rest of the race, still closing on the 2 that got away and nearly took a place on the run in, only I couldn't rise to a sprint.
Was in some pain immediately afterwards, had treatment ice and bandaging from the OoM and have spent the afternoon eating Ibu with my foot up.
Guess tomorrow could be my 1st day off in 51

Ouch, did the same thing to my ankle yesterday also.
But RIICE (extra I for Ibuprofen) seems to be doing the trick for me

    Boo x 2

Same here, also do quite a few single leg stability exercises as part of my routine, so I'm hoping that has prevented it from being serious. Just mailed the sports clinic anyway, will probably pop in Weds for a once over, once it's settled down.

This time last week I really didn't expect to be composing an update this week.
My ankle blew up like a balloon by Monday, had a chat with the physio and managed to get an appointment for Tuesday morning. In the meantime, I rested, iced, ibu'd, compressed, elevated, vitamin c'd and arnica'd whenever I could.
Did manage 1hr on the turbo trainer on Monday night with only minor discomfort, so that was something at least.
Tuesday I was told, grade 2 ligament strain and up to 6-8 weeks for full recovery, bit of a poke, no treatment per se and a gold old strapping up to immobilize the lateral movement. Got a bunch of rehab exercises to do, to stop the area getting lazy and to hopefully speed up recovery when we got that far. I had to do these 3 times per day, balance on a wobble cushion, write letters with my toes, resistance against my other foot and heel raises, I would guess I done these about 8 - 10 times per day!
By Wednesday evening I had clocked up 55 virtual bike miles on the turbo and even after rattling through 8 episodes of BBC Click I was losing the will to live!
All the while though, the swelling was reducing, the bruising was turning my foot a kaleidoscope of colours, but I felt there was progress, so much so the runners went on Thurs evening for a gentle 5k trot around the local GAA pitch. Made it a clockwise run, as turning left was painful and I came through this ok, with no additional pain or swelling :).
Friday I doubled that, took the outer compression sleeve off and run ran with the taping. Again this was fine including when I increased the pace towards the end.
Saturday I was feeling a little more confident, but still stuck to the comfort of grass and laps as I popped over to Shanganagh. It was a little sore starting off, but once warmed up it was fine so I decided to make the most of it. So after starting at about 7:30, I gradually would it up to about 6:30 pace by mile 6, kept it in the 6:30 - 6:40 range for 7 miles and then backed off for the last mile to squeeze out a 1:29 HM.
Stepped back today with 4 miles on grass.
Missed the Intermediate of course, but running around Avondale was never going to be on the cards.

I'm far from recovered, the first steps in the morning or after sitting are very sore. There's still a lot of bruising, but the pain now is more localized, on the ankle bone and the fleshy area below, but I would have taken that this time last week.

It's a funny old injury IME. Sometimes it feels grand then takes 2+ weeks to recover, sometimes it's fine the next day, and sometimes it can even result in a broken bone! (Mrs C turned her ankle badly enough that the ligament pull managed to cause a fracture).
Glad to hear you're on the mend fairly quickly.
