How much was your very first insurance quote?

There seems to be an influx of insurance quote rants and raves on here recently and lots of talk of what people are paying for their first ever insurance quotes so I thought it might be interesting to make a poll.

I originally went checking out insurance quotes about 6 months ago and was getting pretty decent quotes (around E700 for a 2.7 litre!) what with me being a learner driver and all... and now that I'm looking for quotes I'm getting ridiculous quotes like E1200 and that's for a way smaller car, so yup, it would appear that quotes are on the up and up...

Oh and One Direct and Hibernian refused to even quote me on anything larger than a 1.4!

    Ok so here goes...

    First Insurance Quote Details:

    Sex: Female
    Age: 25

In fairness OP that quote of €850.00 is very good for you as you have 0 NCB. I think most insurance companys like Quinn and Hibernian wont offer you a quote unless you are 26 or older. When i bought myself a VW 1.4 i got a quote of €1,600 and i had 0 NCB and that was the best i could get.

I now drive a VW GTi 2.0ltr and pay €700.00 fully comp.

if you think 1200 is a "ridiculous" quote be thankful you are not a guy.

you can bet it the female gender were penalized in something else in a similar way it wouldn't last long.

btw i think capping your poll at 3000 is a bit low.

    +1

Back in 2000, I paid 2200 pounds for insurance on a 1043cc Seat Ibiza. With 43bhp, it didn't have the power to pull you out of bed!
I was 18 at the time with 0 years NCB so the equivalent of 3000 euro was considered normal rates for a guy

    My first insurance premium

    Started driving in 2002
Car: Renault Megavan 1.9 flat diesel valued at €5,000.
My details: 20 year old male, full Irish license with no medical conditions.
    NCB: 0 years.
    Compay: Quinn Direct Insurance.
Cover: Third party, fire and theft
    Premium: €2,400 approx.

If it was a regular 4/5 seater car (even a basic 1 litre) you could add on another grand and if I was on a provisional license you could add on another grand again....I didn't have the luxury of driving around for months on end with L plates on my car and could only have afforded insurance if I earned my full license first. I have friends who paid €5,000 upwards to get on the road. What annoyed me most was my insurance premium remained high for a good few years even though no claims or change in particulars were made. I did feel unfairly done by to see other people my age causing very serious accidents and getting back on the road for a song after cause they were insured under Mammy or Daddies name. Also I do know girls who would easily give any fella a run for his money when it comes to being wreckless/ careless/ dangerous on the road. Ok rant over for the day:mad:

OP if you ask me you are getting off very lightly if you ask me. Just make a comparison with other peoples initial premiums as outlined in the thread. Who the hell and how are people paying less than 100 for car insurance as per the poll is what I'd like to know:rolleyes:

22 Male with provisional and no history - £2700/€3500 for a 1.0 89 mini valued at ~1500 or so. I think it took 3 years before I was paying under £2000. So not much sympathy for the kids bitching about the cost of insurance in an M3 or Evo.

Paid £600 for my first Renault 5 in 1986. It has never exceeded £800 despite losing NCB in 1996. It is now down to €400 for a commercial policy. I also have a 750 Sizuki sports bike covered at just €320 on a seperate policy.

As I type this I've a letter waiting for me at home from Quinn so I'll see what it says, fingers crossed it's a lower renewal quote. I'm waiting on a quote back from 'Munster insurances' at the moment as well. So far - even at that price - Quinn are the cheapest insurer I can find from online sites.. :(

Well got a quote from Quinn today for €998 (+64.70 service charge as well) -TPFT.

It says excess €300 (Section 1 only) what does this mean? I assume this isn't voluntary and I have to pay it?

    Why is this?

    Details

    Honda accord petrol 2.0 i-vtec
    NCB 3 years
    Male 23yo

Excess is the amount you have to pay out in the case of a claim. So if you claim for 1000, they will only pay 700 and you have to pay the first 300.

I believe that for the very most part if you are with the insurance for more than a few years you would be stung for the 300 on top of your premium come next renewal time. This was the case for a few people I know where third party claims were made.

In the UK it would appear that you can quite often increase your voluntary excess to reduce your premium but think thats virtually unheard of here or at least was the case of any any insurance company/ broker I was getting quote off any renewal time.
