    Hi there,

I've just bought some dumbbells the other day and am starting out with weightlifting. I'm noticing that my right arm is a fair bit stronger than my left.
Fair enough as I'm right-handed, but I also have some old ligament damage in my left shoulder.

Anyway, I'm just wondering what's the best way to even things up?

    a) Do left side only for a while
    b) Do 2 lifts on the left for every 1 on the right for a while
    c) Do the same on each side, but stay at the same weight until they feel more equal

    Thanks!

    Hi There

First and foremost get medical advice regarding shoulder damage. Check that it is ok to start with weights!!!!!

Then what I do when I find my dominant side stronger is to work both sides, but only perform the number of reps that my weaker side can perform. Once my weaker side gives out, I stop, rest and then do next set. I use the same weight on both sides.

    Best Regards,

    M

Thanks for the tip! Seems a sensible approach.

The doc told me that I should lift weights and try to build up the surrounding muscle. Only getting around to it now, about 5 years later...
