Virgin Mary image ‘appears’ on tree in Rathkeale - locals
Written by Newswire Editor on July 7th, 2009 at 21:43

    (UPDATE - 2, Image added)

Local radio is reporting that residents in the west Limerick town of Rathkeale say an “outline” of the Virgin Mary has allegedly appeared on a tree in church grounds in the town.

The report says a number of people “noticed the outline of the Blessed Virgin in a tree cut down as part of a cleanup operation at a church” on Monday.

Live95FM says a large crowd had gathered at St. Mary’s church Monday night with a “steady flow of people today as the news spreads”.

A chairman of the local community council told local radio in an interview, “Certainly there was a figure of a lady, it was eerie looking i’ll be honest with you”, “It’s hard to describe it really; you’d nearly want to see it”.

    Your grand thanks.

    NEW DETAILS
Locals in the area have now signed a petition preventing the removal of the tree from the grounds of the church with some saying it’s a ‘divine intervention’.

It comes as a local priest calls for restraint.“There’s nothing there, it’s just a tree. People shouldn’t worship a tree”, Fr Willie Russell said.

    NEW DETAILS
Almost 2,000 people in Rathkeale have now signed a petition to keep the tree stump as a permanent fixture where it stands on church grounds. We have been kindly sent on this image of the stump. This is what all the fuss is about…

I recall people telling me that in the 80's recession the country was a made a laughing stock internationally with reports like this and thousands of people actually believing it. I think the country looks stupid enough as it is without this again.

    The tree in question

There is a tree in Burt, Donegal, which is supposedly a near perfect replica of a naked women, orifices and all. Well, at least the lower half of a woman. Now, from what I've heard, Burt men consider a tree a step above a sheep, so you can guess what the tree has to put up with...

    It's certainly no virgin.

Why would the Virgin Mary be hanging out in Limerick:confused: Seems a strange choice. I would'nt go there on holiday.

was a bit about it on Last word this afternoon. Some as far as Dublin are travelling down to the site of the alleged apparition

you’d nearly want to see it”.

You're right. I 'nearly' wanted to see it, until I suddenly remembered it's a bunch of old retards standing around looking at a tree.

Any time one of these shapes resembles a female it's automatically recognised as the Virgin Mary. What if it's Ena Sharples or Katy French or some other woman?

never thought I'd hear myself say this, but..

You should listen to what the priest said OP.

west (and east) limerick is nice actually. The city is grand too. Just avoid moyross and south hill. Drove down st.marys park with my dad once for the craic. We came out safe so I guess thats ok too. :D. Wouldnt advise anyone to walk down it though. We had the protection of the car.
I dont beleive all this crap though.

    There’s nothing there, it’s just a tree.

There's something wrong when a priest is the most level-headed person in the story.

I just think fate gives us false hope. We should look at the present and not worry about the future. Focus on what has to be done now, rather than worrying about something later on.

I'm not looking to offend anybody either.

Im down in Rathkeale visiting the rents at the moment, I swear there is never a dull moment in this town!

Just went to see the 'apparition'.
    About 100 cars parked outside.
    Photographers and reporters everywhere.
Theres a vigil around the tree stump of about 60 people saying the rosary.
Theres a queue of about 40 people waiting for a blessing of some healing eucharist minister.

Storys doing the rounds are that they tried to cut down the tree earlier and the saw broke. Then when they tried to saw it again It didnt even make a dent in the tree. The settled Rathkeale travellers have said that If they want to cut down the tree then they'll have to get through them first.

Il be back tommorow selling holy water bottles and rosary beads!
