It's not low for your age given the average industrial wage is less. It does depend on your profession though - it could be low for your line of work.

It has nothing to do with your age.Its about the job you do and your qualifications. There are people your age working for half what you earn and others and for 2/3 times..

In the current climate all i can say is be glad you have a job!

    - and about 400,000 like you - totally agree.
    - salary / age - all relative and like previous posters said it depends on your job for example.

Tier 1, 2, or 3. What tech do you support? What qualifications and certs do you have? How many years experience? How much responsibility? What benefits do you have?

All these things have to be taken into account.

As others have pointed out, it's experience and qualifications (and some luck) that matters, not age. I know people who were earning more money from their first graduate job than either of their parents ever had.

Within reason don't wouldn't worry too much about your current pay rate. Instead worry about how you can progress your career and be better positioned in two, five or ten years time.

That salary's pretty much right at the minute in terms of your skills imo.

If you want to progress further you might want to think of getting the full MCSE, then if your work, has them/supports other training, you could consider maybe ITIL Certification, VMWare/Hyper-V, Citrix, all different areas to be honest.

It would depend on what you want to do next.

It's experience and qualifications (and some luck) that helps you get a job with particular responsibilities.

It's the responsibilities of the job that determine the salary.

(Except in some state organisations, where people get automatic increments just because they've got older more experienced in the last year.)

I know people in their mid 60's who "retired" from their career jobs and took are lower-responsibility (and thus lower paid) jobs when they were late-50-something.

38k is low for a 27 year old? 38k is a good wage for anybody of any age. I'm sure all the minimum wage earners on this board will be fuming at the thought that you perceive 730 quid a week as low when they earn half as much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,203 ✭✭✭partyguinness

I am 30...I was on €57,200 up to the end of March but was put down to a "3 day week" so am now on €34,320 (taxable) plus €102 (non taxable) per week in Jobseekers Benefit which I am still waiting for...:(

That makes a total of €39,524 a year for 3 days work...feel like a teacher now....cant complain as many of my ex colleagues lost their jobs. The Jobseekers Benefit will run out in March 2010 and I dont expect to put back full time anytime soon.

I'm 23 and on €28,000 a year. Which considering I work in the construction industry is a blessing.

Although it pains me because I use to earn almost €30k working part time when I was a student. If I was still there I'd be getting more. Ah well, can't complain

I wasn't bitching. I said I was lucky to be earning what I'm earning and I can't complain.

I know there are people on the dole. Before I finished college I lost my job and I was on the dole for 3 months last summer trying to find a job. And I'm lucky I got one. But I'm still entitled to complain about it if I want.

I'm late 30's now and last year was on 90k. Got tired of it though so am on almost half that now, doing something I actually enjoy and am a much happier person for it.

I don't think you can necessarily compare age and earnings though. The two aren't related in my view.

In my last job in a pensions company you'd have to be a portfolio manager to even earn close to 38k. Most staff had college qualifications.

FYI in IT your expected to train yourself in the evenings and weekend. Its really not a job to get into for the money. Plus the money isnt exactly massive in general.

He was asking for advice from other people in IT. If your not in IT then the question wasn't for you in the first place.

So you're in IT Support OP?

Are you one of the people who tell me to shut down my PC and restart it for just about every single problem? :p

Can't open attachments? Restart your PC.
Computer not printing docs? Restart your PC
PC so slow you're about to put a fist through the monitor? Restart your PC

    I rarely call them anymore.....
Probably a devious plan to get people to stop calling them

But that's ok, I'm constantly forgetting my password :pac:
Can you unlock this again guys, SORRY!?

That would generally be Teir 1 support, the OP is in Tier 2. Tier 2 would deal with the more complex issues. Teir 1 deal with repetitive simple issues like the ones you are discussing. But plenty of people on Teir 2 would have to deal with this sort of silly stuff now and again. But their main tasks should be more complex.

I wasn't expecting sympathy. If anyone was it was the guy who came into a thread called "What salary are you on?" and said he was on the dole. Jesus Christ....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,193 ✭✭✭[Jackass]

Not to get overly ritous here, but most people on the dole (90%) have earned it through years of working and paying taxes...it's not their fault if the country has gone to sh*t and they can't find work in their specific area.

I think we're very slow to lose this boom time "lazy bum on the dole" attitude. There's lots of very well educted, hard working people out there living off €200 or so a week.

Don't want to drag things off topic, just thought I'd throw that in there cause it's worth mentioning. (and no, I'm not on the dole, I'm lucky enough to have a job right now).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,925 ✭✭✭Otis Driftwood

Idiocy like that is probably the reason he is on the dole.:o

    Your wit astounds me.

23, Master Farrier, 240,000 last year, all taxable. 6 till 8, 6 days. Toughest year of my life.

I don't think there's really a hard and fast rule for the difference between tiers. This morning I had an issue i would class as Tier 2 (though some would consider it Tier 3).

Had a routing problem between mail servers and the issue had to be tracked down. Turned out to be an EIGRP misconfiguration on one of the Cisco routers... That's what happens when you let service providers near your equipment

Essentially I had to track down where the fault was and then correct the configuration on said router.

Also had an issue with our ERP system and it required some modifications for one of the departments. This I would class as Tier 3 (had to re-code some areas and re-do some reports).

I had to google what a Master Farrier was. Looks like a good enough wage but crappy hours. I suppose at 23 that's fine. I'm only 34 and went the opposite direction, decided life was for living, not working :D

Might be of interest to some of you. Especially you Cassidy1. Apparently you should be on €30,000 - €40,000!

I'm on the dole too but not even getting the full amount coz apparently working to support yourself through college means squat and my parents should be supporting me at the age of 22!

2years ago in different job I was making 35k

for me this is a real demotivator but we are living in unprecedented times and I try not to take it as a personal reflection on my career development and just a " sign of the times"
still pisses me right off though!
