Right i bought a tub of Maxi Muscle pro gain today it coincide with rugby pre season and out of curiosity since im using the gym four or so days a week.

Anyway i struggled to drink the recommend two scoops with 500ml water dew to the vile taste (which i expected) and a nausea feeling when drinking it. I managed to get 300ml down and said ill do the remaining 200ml after my workout because my mind wasn't really up to it. Downed it down like bad medicine trying to not to think about it but it still gave me a slightly sicky feeling while drinking it.

So my question is, is there anyway to improve the taste or a alternative medium beside water to take it with?

    Cheers.

(Also mods feel free to move this if it's in the wrong section as i haven't a clue exactly where to put it)

Ice. Blend it with some ice and you'll get a milkshake effect. Also, the cold will tone down the sickly aftertaste.

However, you could also use a half dose for a couple of weeks, until you are used to it.

    You have a three options:
    1. What EileenG suggested.
    2. Getting used to it somehow like I did.
    3. Getting a blender and mixing it with syrup or fruits.

Or you could travel back in time and ask on here for a shake that doesn't taste like poo. :P

The ice is probably the best idea if it's practical for ya.

Finish the tub and try another brand there are plenty of other brands that taste great . On a side note gainers are usually just whey with bulking agents it will work out a lot cheaper if you buy some whey and get your own bulking agents

Mix it with less water and knock it back --> less to drink.

Aye, I'm sure they're on nothing but shakes. :P

I find RAM orange flavour pretty damn nice, mixes easily too with just a couple of shakes of the cup.

The op is looking for a gainer

Just pick up some whey (optimum nutrition or nutrition x ) to add cals after workouts ad d dextrose times add oats ;)

Fair enough, though when I compared the labels of RAM and a "gainer" and there was very little difference between them, hence my recommendation.

They have loads of different types of supplements on myprotein.co.uk, both flavoured and unflavoured. You can buy different types of flavouring on the site which can be added that make d shake tast gorgeous and everything is really good value. Plus u can get these special shakers with a steel ball in them which mixes the shake excellently!! Strongly recommend this site.:D

Or 4 - Give up supplements, get your protein from regular, non-processed food, AND save your money (I also guarantee you won't be protein-deficient).

Save money if you are paying over the odds for branded stuff like maximuscle, but many unbranded protein powders are a cheap source of food/protein. I use unflavoured whey in all sorts of things, I do like the taste.

I think ice is essential in shakes too, dunno how people can stomach it without it, esp. when it is so nice with it. Its like warm flat coke vs a frosty glass bottle of coke.

Meh as i said it was a bit of a curiosity think to coincide with a frequent gym schedule so i just wanted to see if there was any results.

So pretty much the best method is to take it with crushed ice and let it go cold yeah?

I tried Maximuscle Cyclone orange flavour last year and it was a foul, disgusting concoction. To get through it I had a ritual where I would hold my nose and knock it back in one, then quickly rinse my mouth out with water and then take a swig of orange juice before releasing by hand from my nose. It helped considerably.

That's fair enough, and I know you like the taste of it as you've mentioned that before. I always get the impression on here that people like to chug back their shakes cos it's the done thing and it feels like the thing to do coming outta the gym with a 'pump' on. Which is fair enough too, but it seems ridiculous to me that people will drink something they hate the taste of, knocking back something with a grimace after they've paid x amount of euros for the pleasure, when they don't really need it at all.

Yes, I agree fully. Seems like a no-pain no-gain mentality, like people forcing down raw eggs rocky style, when cooked ones give more available protein.

A cheap source of protein is turkey mince, it is usally low fat, but tesco now have a really cheap one, but it is 10% fat (usually turkey mince is 2-4%), but it is about €2.25 for 500g which is a very good price. The fat doesn't bother me much, just means no need to add any to the pan. I still find turkey a bit dry & bland, it is fine in spag bol or with spices added.

I use orange flavoured Maximuscle Cyclone mixed with orange juice, its really nice especially when cold

Rubadub, a really good way to reduce the fat from mince is as you say cook it in a pan with no extra oil. When its cooked put it into a strainer and rinse the meat under really hot/boiling water. This can easily remove half the fat from the meat. Stop rinsing the meat until you can't see anymore fat draining out of the strainer.

I often use this method with beef and then add a small bit of cajun or what even spices I have lying around.

To the OP try chicken and broccoli 4 times a day. It's not good!
