Is it an open draw? Or do the provincial semi finalists meet the round 1 winners?

Get your priorities right. Cancel your holidays. Put it this way: There is more chance of you lying on a beach somewhere wondering what is happening in an important match, than you being at an important match wondering what is happening on some beach.

Some interesing ties in there, local derby in Westmeath vs Wicklow, a re-match of the game that started the Kerry road to recovery a few years ago in Kerry vs Longford and Derry vs Monaghan.

Of course the big game will be Wexford vs Roscommon ;)

As a Wicklow man, I'm happy enough with the draw (better than getting Kerry). What surprised me was that of the 8 games 7 of the home teams played in Round 1!

    fair play to Wicklow!

am in exile in England - was at a function type thing last night in UK so couldn't get to the game - when I didn't get any text from the brother I presumed it was bad news - couldn't believe when I logged on this morning that we beat Fermanagh :)

so all these games gonna be at 7pm next Saturday ? may have to make the trip

    Westmeath-Meath an interesting one too

....and thank God we avoided Kerry

    Monaghan V Derry

The GAA Gods are intent on making Monaghan work hard for progress.
    Donegal V Clare

    I'm happy with that.

Presumably Kerry and Longford won't be televised leaving me with a 400+mile round trip up to Pearse Park, the distance not being the problem but the third world standard roads through the midlands. Grrrrr :(

kerry v longford and derry v monaghan will be the 2 televised games IMO. tough one for us, wil be hard to go up there and win but i think we can do it.

Why the hell would they show Kerry/Longford? It would be a joke if they did, it will be a guaranteed massacre.

Some really good games in Rd 2.
    I go for
    Down to beat Laoise
    Derry
    Kerry
    Wexford
    Tipp
    Donegal
    Meath
    Wicklow.

Great to see Wicklow getting a big enough scalp last week. Can only be good for the game if they get another. Wexford have a good chance to pick up another win while Tipp have a really good chance of taking Sligo. Hope I get the Meath forecast wrong;)

What surprised me was that of the 8 games 7 of the home teams played in Round 1!

You wouldn't be that surprised if you'd seen the way the 'draw' for home advantage was done.
It wasn't corrupt or anything, just a total fail at being randon.

Stooge A picked a ball from Pot 1 (The R1 winners), and placed it in Pot 3.
Stooge B picked a ball from Pot 2 (The losing SFs) and placed it in Pot 3.

Stooge A then did the 'randomizing' process, which involved moving the balls in pot 3 a full 360% before picking the nearest one to him for home advantage.

Definitely. Derry and Donegal last year, Armagh and Derry this year. Kerry in 2 Q/F's too.

Hard one to call. Doherty back will be a massive help but so will Freeman. I'd have to fancy Derry, but it will be tight.

Hope it's a clean game beacause the last game tarnished what was a decent Ulster Championship this year and last. People see the exception and apply it to Ulster.

    Smashey wrote:

Hard to know. A relatively easy draw suited us in 03 I suppose. After this I think it's Leinster/Connacht losers/Limerick, assuming Antrim lose, so not sure if an easy draw is that good.

TV3 have first pick so maybe RTE will show another game. Maybe bring forward the Monghan Derry match and show Kerry. Though I'm sure some will moan about a late kick off!

Down V. Laois. Hard to call. Both have been poor. Down by 2.

Monaghan V. Derry. Derry by 2

Longford V. Kerry. Kerry by 5.

Wexford V. Roscommon. Who knows? Wexford by 4.

Tipp V. Sligo. Hard to know. Tipp by 3.

Donegal V. Clare. Donegal by 9.

Westmeath V. Meath. Westmeath by 2.

Wicklow V. Cavan. Hard to call. Draw. Cavan in Extra time.

I dont know what they are showing yet but there are 2 hurling qualifiers on next Sat too and they have to show the Clare v Galway hurling match.

Have to say I am disappointed that Kerry didn't get Monaghan or Derry.Instead Kerry will motor on with a comfortable win over Longford no matter how Homerjay wants to talk Longford up of putting up a big challenge.I'll eat a straw hat if that happens.

We'll all have to suffer another mish-mash game between Monaghan and Derry that will culminate in more suspensions and the football purist wondering when there will be good competitive games televised.

I think they should televise Westmeath v Meath.Sure these two teams are far from great but they both play football..pure football and it is a derby.Other game should be Kerry v Longford.

I see wins for Kerry,Sligo,Meath,Wicklow,Down,Donegal,Wexford and Derry.

don't forget 2006 - Monaghan got Wicklow at home in the first round of the qualifiers (or correct me if I'm wrong) - I was a bit late getting up to that game - think Monaghan had got 3 goals by the time I arrived

Is Clare Galway in the evening? Maybe Kerry during the day as it will silence the travelling moaners too?

And Derry Monaghan at 7. TV3 mighn't be too happy!

Maybe a Monaghan would have been better for them? They'll probably end up with Antrim after that, though I think Antrim would give them a right go, maybe more so than say Mayo or Kildare.

On Monghan Derry, it really is up to Derry. Derry don't need to go down to that level, Monaghan need them too.

The only real mismatch is Donegal Clare and no doubt I'll eat my words on that.

Any word on what Bonnar and Gallagher were up to? Bonnar apparently suspended from Glenswilly and Gallagher warned?

Dont think its the provincial losers yet in next round, would think the 8 winners in round 2 will be drawn against each other in round 3 and the 4 winners from that up against the provincial losers in round 4.

Cavan's championship ends here. No matter how I look at it I can't see Cavan getting a result against a well-drilled Wicklow team. Fair play to Wicklow though, Micko is working wonders and this could lead to a good run for them. How much I'd love it if he arrived in cavan but I think even he realises there's nothing there to work with.

I'd say all of about ten Cavan people will travel down to Aughrim.

I think Monaghan and Derry should have been redrawn. Its stupid to have two teams who have already played each other playing each other again this early in the qualifers.

That said, the GAA never want the good Ulster teams dominating the championship so Ulster teams are always drawn against each other early in the qualifers.

Also, surely the provincial semi-finalists should have gotten home drawns as a reward for reaching that round of the championship?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,950 ✭✭✭deisedude

    My predictions are:

Down V Laois -Laois got hammered by Kildare, Down made hard work of London. Tough one to call, both quite bad at the moment. I'l reluctantly go for Down

Monaghan V Derry- I fancy Monaghan to avenge their loss to Derry in a war of attrition.

    Longford V Kerry- Kerry comfortably

Wexford V Roscommon- I think Wexford even without Mattie Forde should have enough for Roscommon by a point or 2

Tipperary V Sligo- Sligo should have beat Galway and i'd fancy them against a fast improving Tipp team. If they can keep Grogan relatively quite they should be ok

Donegal V Clare- Donegal are getting quite lucky with the draw IMO. Another Div 4 team. Donegal may not be in great form but you would imagine they could still put Clare to the sword

Westmeath V Meath- Westmeath could get another trimming here from their neighbours

Wicklow V Cavan- Gut feeling for Cavan.

It is amazing the amount of times Ulster teams clash in the qualifiers. It was nearly so predictable that Derry were going to get Donegal or Monaghan.

You mean giving respect to your opposition? Nothing shameless about that.

    Longford beat Kerry in longford 3 years ago, it's a tight pitch and it's 15 v 15.

Remember 2006 Laois beat tyrone by 3 points in......wait for it...Round 2 of the qualifiers. Who saw that coming? "aghh but laois were a better team at the time then Longford are now" i hear u say?? I say "don't mind that!!"

Kerry should win on saturday but longford will be there or there abouts going into the final 10 minutes.

It happens every year. The Ulster teams would dominate the qualifers otherwise. Derry, Monaghan and Armagh would beat the bulk of teams in the qualifers. The GAA don't want four or five Ulster teams in the quarter finals come the semis though so the big Ulster sides are always drawn against each other early in the qualifers.

I thought Monaghan played Derry last year and the winners then played surprise, surprise, Donegal in the next round.

This year Monaghan played Armagh and surprise, surprise the winners play Derry.

Seems a handy way to get rid of 2 good Ulster sides! ;)
