Myself and my g/f were talking about this awhile ago and I said I post it.

I like trying foreign beers, they're usually nicer than what "normal" stuff you find.

Does anybody know if any pubs in Carlow stock foreign beer.

I know Lev and Frye have Heineken export and most places have Corona these days but where else?

lemongrass, the asian restaraunt near extravision has some lovely asian beers.. but you probably have to buy food as well.

Carlow is fairly rubbish for foreign beers from my experience. Bud, Heineken, Carlsberg etc on draft then maybe Corona or the odd place would have some Polish bottled beer.
Haven't seen anywhere that sells the likes of Budvar, Staropramen or Hoegarden.

I was aware of that, I've had most of the ones they have if not all. What I'm really looking for is Pubs though

Ya its pretty bad how few foreign beers (in saying that nearly all beers are foreign in ireland but thats really just semantics) are in Carlow, I've given up on pubs having anything different but even the off licenses aren't great for foreign beers.

Gives me idea for new thread, must try beer of the week where somebody posts a beer and everybody tries it and then posts good or bad, or something similar to that :pac::pac::pac:

Yeah, I've got a bit of a taste for German beers, and coming back here after the summer is annoying...

by foreign beers I mean... Non-diegio (SP?) chemical filled crap.
As for beer of the week, I suggest you start with Heineken import.

I like Pils and Export, I'm not a big fan of Weisse beer. There's a german pils in Lidl that's €6.99 for 6x500ml. Its good. Perlenbacher I think its the name.

Have any of ye tried the local stuff? I don't see much of it in many pubs though.
Not foreign I know, but not Diageo

The O'Hara stout is quite nice, as is the wheat beer. That's all I've had.

The sad thing about that is I've never see it in Carlow. I've been told that its available in The Porter House but I've never been in one myself. I wonder can you buy some straight from the Brewery?

Are either available in a Pub? If so, please tell me where.

Never seen them in any pubs, the only place was in O'Briens off-license and in saying that I never even copped that they were from Carlow - worst locally advertised product ever (and their website is piss poor, Hmm can I say piss poor??)

Most of the larger supermarkets have it, I've got some in Tesco and SuperValue, you just need to look out for it. I'm sure it's available elsewhere in the town too.

Teach upstairs is doing o'haras on draught, well they were 2/3 weeks ago anyhow.

I had some of the most amazing beers when away there, it's complete crap here we have in comparison..

    Yeah they still are.

You can get Koppaberg cider in the Barrow Bar (or whatever they are calling it this week)

Nearly all the beers available in Ireland are brewed under licence here and distributed by Diageo or Heineken. AFAIK the only beers that you come across regularly enough that aren't brewed here are Corona and the Import label Heineken, which Heineken Ireland are trying to stop the sale of as the profits go abroad.

had Lech in the Barracks last night. they said that they used to stock more foreign beers but they werent being bought, and therefore went out of date.

maybe we're brainwashed into thinking that there's no alternative to over-commercialised beers?

and I had Tyskie lastnight in the barracks with Nead21.

Tyskie and Lech are also available in Dinn Ri. Found that one out this week. I suppose its no surprise really since The Barracks have it.

Oh my god that is freakin awesome - love that drink sooo much. Definitely another reason for me to drink there then I guess.

Is it on draught or bottle? Not that it really matters :)

Erdingeer is also available in The Irishman

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    Last Saturday:
    Irishmans had Erdinger and Paulaner
    Carpe Diem had Erdiner
O'Loughlins no longer have foreign beers
Leverett and Fryes had no foreign beers
    Tullys had no foreign beers
    Dinn Ri had Lech
    Med Bar had Erdiner

All foreign beers were in bottles. Irishmans provided a Paulaner glass.

Zombie thread but a good topic.
Carlow is poor for non-mainstream beers.
Deanoz has Tiger, Erdinger, Paulaner and one other in bottles.

Every pub i go into i always ask for the Carlow beers 1st. The response is usually "we don't stock it, no one would be interested in it". Some publicians are seriously lazy in this regard.

I know its not in Carlow, but the pumphouse in Kilkenny are currently starting to stock craft brewery beers from Ireland.

The last time I was in I was talking to the owner and he said he was trying out a large amount from around the country and what ever proved to be the most popular would be got in on draft.
Might be an alternative night out for the connoisseur.
