What the fcuk is with the other forums??? I mean, you get interested in something, right? You try it out, you go on to one of the threads/forums and you want to ask a few questions about your new interest and you get nothing... it is like the Elite of that forum do not want to mix with the riff raff... "oh look, it's a new guy, lets ignore him". Pfft...

    Aye. Complete the repertoire.

A lot of new threads / posts are ignored not entirely because the other readers are elitist, but because the OP asks an open-ended question.
Imagine an Indian man walks into an Irish bar and instantly starts telling people he's simply "thinking of taking up hurling". With no real direction or shown intent or basically any attempt to meet the others half-way by demonstrating some knowledge of, or attempt to learn the discipline. It'll get a few looks (views), it'll catch the interest of plenty, but they still won't be inclined to engage in a discussion because it's just going to be a long, and quite possibly pointless one.

    Iamxavier: Give examples.

I see this in the motors forum a lot.

Anytime someboidy looks for help after:
    Speeding
    Car-tax issues
    NCT,
    Buying a Renault
Or generally doing anything remotely illegal, potentially dangerous, or just not done that way gosh darn it...

They get ganged up on by a bunch of self righteous morons who insist that laws written by a muppet who gets driven to work everyday are worth more than common bloody sense.

The same could be said about the most of Boards.

Cable forums actively report people who've own dodgybox's to the Garda.

Do anything remotely illegal, no matter how ****ing awesome it is, or harmless it is, in truth, and you'll be swamped by a hundred lifeless idiots who'se only satisfaction in life is to see other people punished for misdeeds they themselves are almost certainly guilty of at some stage in their own lives.

I mean, if I said I was building a railgun... something which according to one interpretation of Irish firearm law is perfectly legal... there'd still be 20 people who'd call the guards just for the smug satisfaction of being a goddamned busybody.

I mean, towing a willing cyclist up to 70mph with a motorcycle.... that was bleeding hoot... and we risked nobody but ourselves with it... but the way some people here would act, you'd swear we were Adolf Hitler eating their baby alive.

That, and nobody dares mention MCD again despite the stickies being gone.

And yes, I'm aware Setanta sports went to the wall because of Dodgybox's... good riddance, their F1 coverage was crap.

I think the biggest reason for this perceived elitism is posters posting threads that have been answered thousands of times without bothering to use the search function or read the stickies.....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

/\ read the stickies! Or even do a search, there is only so many times old lags can see a thread titled, "What car for 5000 euro?" or a query about tyres without going Hurmph!

Not exactly, people like to gloat it seems, and completely ignore the OP, while debating about a differant matter which has little relevance.

Fitness forum "How do I lose fat" get a few answers, then two egotystical morons will debate about what they think is the better of the two, bar bells or dumb bells... The op doesn't really give a sh!t about it really. He wants to know a specific question. Too much snobbery tbh.

Same with the Raquet forum, I have asked on differant occasions if there was a club in a certain area for tennis or squash, as I am have an interest, but the snobbery is unreal. Simple fcuking question to which nobody will bother their holes answering.

Motor forum is another one, if you are not an elitist pr!ck then don't expect much help.

The question still has to be asked... did you actually look back through the forum when posting that thread??

What all these generic threads are leading to: is regular posters getting dissillusioned and not bothering to reply, leaving threads open to anyone at all to answer whatever way they see fit, be it right, wrong or plain crazy advice

Hang around in the Emergency Services forum for any length of time and you will understand what this poster is on about. It's so elitist I'm stunned some posters are able to see with their heads stuck out their own asses. Most of the regulars have a smarmy response and attitude to every thread. I'm suprised the mods allow the goings on there. Need a thick skin you do.

That said, there are some decent folk on it!

There is as being pointed out before ,a culture of responding to many new threads ( under the guise of witty response ) with a contemptous reply and I have myself , occasionaly responded as such but usually only if the thread in question is going down the route of humor .

But that does not mean I dont understand the difference between being humorous , sarcastic and double standards . See how some posters will thank a mod for closing a thread ie, ' flirting ' yet will gladly indulge in another thread , on the same topic for which the thread they thanked the mod for, was locked

It has being mentioned in another thread that serious topics should have a quote inserted saying '' please no silly ,witty or non helpful replys '' so that peeps will do as requested .That would help a lot I am sure .

Yes there are many decent folk on boards , the vast majority in fact .

I think you are being harsh on the Poker forum (I have zero experience of the Emergency Services forum so I cannot comment). Just quickly scanning through the main page I found a couple of newbie help threads (Here and here).

Also, in the Hold Em Hand History and Theory section a special thread was started for questions from new players. Now this was, undoubtedly, because the more experienced posters sometimes gave responses that seemed trite to new players were not used to the way advice is often given on poker forums. In response to a detailed question which, in the eyes of the poster seems quite complicated, they may receive a one or two word response such as "Fold" or "Call".

Poker, being a technical forum in the Theory sections, can be a bit tedious when you are responding to the 100th thread that month started by a new player asking "Should I go all in here with AK?". Combined with what does, admittedly, appear to be a condescending attitude I can see where people get the idea that the poker forum does not welcome new posters but that is simply not true.

The best theory posters (TommyGunne, RedJoker et al) engage in long discussions regularly on fairly basic topics to help players like me understand them. RedJoker went so far as to compile this thread of top theory threads for new players to study.

So, I would disagree with your characterisation of the poker forum.

The questions I have asked are specific to me, nobody can ask these questions. There is no point searching to see if somebody have asked the same question, as it will not relate to me in any way. I might get a few tips, but will not fulfill my entire question, you know?

Latchy I don't mind witty humourous answers, it is the total lack of answers altogether... The lack of helpfullness towards an irregular poster of a forum is unreal. You have to be posting there for some time before you get a proper answer, which is balls tbh.

I want to know a simple thing, oh the boys in the motor forums can help me, as I am not interested in anything else but this one thing, so I can not contribute to the forum really... but I will request information. As I have not posted there before, I expect to get no reply. It has always been the case on boards.ie. Each forum has their little ghey groups, if you are not a part of this group then you can forget it. Ofc, PI is great, that is the only forum I can think of though. Well ah too, but ah is a clusterfcuk :P

Plus there is tonnes of useful info in the Fitness forum stickies.

There are new threads every day, sometimes more than once on the exact same topic as OP posted.

If you are too lazy to look around, then you can't blame the "elite".
Also there are some really knowledgable people posting in fitness, I have learned a lot from them.

Some forums expect a certain level of experience. Go into comp and tech and say "my computer isnt working but the light is blinking omg help!!" doesnt help us help you. If you need to fire off a quick question, yahoo answers is a good alternative as well.

And not that anybody does, but Read the Stickies.

Oh I am with you all the way ,as I quoted you an other post .An example I can give is in the photography threads .I remember posting in there several times asking for or about something to do with photography and was met on each occasion with a blank . What is irionic is the posters will be asking for peeps to ' please look and rate my photos '' .....Like anybody in particular ? LOL .

Overall I know most posts are replied to and i have had people comment on some photos in another thread .

The comp and tech is differant, you cannot answer a question without the basic information...

I am talking about seeking information about something specific, which doesn't need a lot of information at at all.

I'm sorry, is this the topic you're referring to? http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=60866902&postcount=1

"What is the best exercise for getting rid of that gut? "

Cos if it is, that's the most generic and oft asked question on the fitness forum. It's been covered probably thousands of times at this stage... People don't bother answering anymore because they've done it so many times.... I'm gonna be a typical elitiest and say - It's simple. Eat less, move more.

    1) Calculate you daily kcal needs
    2) mulitply by .85
    3) consume the above calories in a ratio of 40:30:30 protein:carbs:fat split over 5-6 meals
    4) lift weights
    5) do some cardio
    6) be consistent

    There ya go.

Oh not this sh1t again. It is all in your head - I promise. When I was a newbie to Boards.ie I didn't feel included or welcomed... and I got over it. I didn't feel looked-down upon either, because that's just paranoia. Now that I'm a member and regular user a long time, I realise this exclusion which newbies feel is not a deliberate strategy, it's just that people don't know you so they don't pay attention to you - and it's not a conscious thing. Then when they get to know you, have more of a feel for you (not because of your "postcount") they'll be more inclined to pay more attention. It's just the way things are when everyone is faceless.
The Racquet Sports forum where you feel people are thinking "let's ignore the newbie" (and you're not a newbie - well to the site in general anyway) is a low-traffic one. I posted two threads not long ago to Portable Media Players and Laptops, also low-traffic, and only got two posts in response in both cases.
As for arguing instead of answering the OP's question, that can happen no matter who you are. It's off-topic and self-indulgent but it's not something which is done to spite the OP - nor is it "elitist" or "snobbish" in its intention, it's just two or more people unable to resist arguing about something they have a passion for. I had a query re playing cards on the Poker forum and the same thing happened - I really don't see the need to take it personally.

Good post. I definitely agree. Just a point to add to it as well....

A lot of times the threads that go unreplied to are from people with low posts counts, on non-regulars. I believe (tho can't guarantee) that this happens because people aren't prepared to spend a long time helping someone who doesn't really contribute anything to a forum and just asks a question, leaves, and comes back when they want more!
