I'll be there, taking it relatively handy.

Dundrum to Dundrum about 55KM ( for me about 85/90k )
Time to complete the 55km will depend on people's fitness and ability to climb Bohernabreena, that is a climb from point D to Point E of the map. It shoudl be hot as well ... keep that in mind.

Wow that's not much at all, sounds good.

    From met.ie:

"Tomorrow, Saturday, will be warm, with hazy sunshine in most areas. A lot of dry weather , but a few scattered showers will develop, with possibly a few thundery ones over parts of Ulster. Top temperatures 18 to 25 degrees, in a light variable or easterly breezes."

Don't think I'll be out on sunday, no car and it seems too far to cycle to :)

@Eggie: Can I call over to wherever you live later on and pick up that tyre? PBK have let me down, although I might chance the tyre, don't like taking another man's butyl.

20 km climbing? Well, I'll give it a go, I'll say that much :)

Are there any spots for water refills?

55km, shouldn't need more than the 1.0L to 1.5L that you have, but Glencree on the way back might have a tap. There will be shops anyways.

There is a river that runs on the way up to SG

Negative. I am a meat popsicle. (I will almost certainly need more than the 1.5L :))

Ok, that all sounds good - see you folks tomorrow at 10.

    [only kidding]

Oh wait, another noob question - how cold does it get on descent? I.e. I'm thinking about bringing jersey & rain jacket. Overkill?

Yeah, arm warmers are handy to have if you have them, or a Gilet. Rain jacket would definitely be OTT.

We can pop into a shop en route, I wouldn't mind a snickers or ice cream if the weather is nice.

Yes, there is a tap in Laragh. If the forecast tomorrow is 18-25 it won't be cold on the descents. I bring a small foldable rain thing in my back pocket, I bring this everywhere, was time trialling with it last night. You never know in this country!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 634 ✭✭✭souter

I shall endeavour to get my lardy ass down there and grind my tank around as much of the course as I can.
At least I can't get too lost on that circuit when if I bailout.

Short route sounds good after last week's epic. Haven't decided yet but will probably do this.

Was out that way yday. Jaysus, descending was the only way to get some air into the lungs.
I would say dont even bring a gilet. If it rains (some is forecast), the temp is still likely to stay around 18-25, so a gilet may cause you to overheat - I would prefer to be wet.

Relatively short I hope, I would be on for a bit of Sally Gap Laragh Wicklow Gap myself. That is quite short and certainly easier than last week, the Wicklow Gap is almost flat most of the way save the little steep bit in the middle by the car park.

Alternatively we could do the Wicklow Gap from the _really_ easy side if heading first up over Bohernabreena. Great descent into Laragh. Then there is an easy run home through Roundwood (completely flat) or Djouce (almost flat) or you have the option of going up Sally Gap either (bit of a hill and then flat.)

@eggie- there is very nice ice cream in Laragh, I am partial to the apple crumble flavour myself.

    Should hopefully join in tomorrow.

@Tojan The only thing you'll need for a descent tomorrow would be a good pair of shades to keep the bugs out of the eyes.

Coming down from pine forest last night I could've done with one of these on my head.

Sounds like a nice spin. Will more than likely hook up with ye on the Firhouse Rd. at the M50 (7.5km from Dundrum)...

I'll be doing the same. After shocking my system back into life last week I'm not sure how far my lardy ass will get but sure I'll give it a go

Was talking to a guy in an lbs recently.

We got talking about group spins. In his group, no one waits. You are given a time and a route. If not on time you go solo or ride hard to catch up.

Surprisingly I am late... Let me know direction and I will meet on the way- if I don't hear reckon I will head towards Sally Gap and then Laragh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,414 ✭✭✭✭Trojan

Got totally and utterly lost :)

Pointing at the mountains and hoping for the best, might run into ye by accident!

Note to self: next time print maps.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,038 ✭✭✭penexpers

Well that was fun. I had mechanical problems (gears and brakes) the whole way today. First climb was tough and then I lost the group on the descent towards Sally Gap. Much thanks to the group for waiting for me and sorry for the hassle. I headed back home through Blessington (and managed to take a few wrong turns on the way - but I avoided the N81!). Going to map out my ride and see how much I did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,509 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

I think everyone was just glad you weren't eaten by cannibals or some monster Caroline was talking about.

Good spin today, shame there was no ice cream. We missed that bastard "Mr.Whipee" by seconds, mocking us as he came up the hill.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 326 ✭✭keenan110

Nice spin today, some nice big climbs too!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,559 ✭✭✭The tax man

Good to see you made it home OK penexpers.
Tough little route on my two least favourite climbs, thanks Caroline.:D

Had to laugh at niceonetom shaking his fist at the ice cream van. He lost out on some good business there.

Glencree is always there when you need it.:P

    Coffee+cake FTW.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,509 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

Yes, next time we definitely stop for coffee rather than gambling on a mobile ice cream parlor.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 72 ✭✭waitforme

Great spin, lovely weather, went on to Laragh for nice sandwich, and they had icecream :-)

102k for me, and my back seems to have survived OK, I may even turn right at Laragh one day soon. Thanks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,400 ✭✭✭Caroline_ie

Thanks for joining people. Was as a hot, sticky, hilly, full of insects. Enjoyed the descents. Need bigger bidon. Stopped in the Park for ice cream and at the pub for a pint on the way back. That's what I call a spin short but enjoyable spin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,833 ✭✭✭niceonetom

That was fun. Short enough, but good value in terms of climbing - I'm guessing at about 700m~800m total accent - would have liked to go to Laragh and maybe do the Wicklow Gap but I'm planning on winning tomorrow's sportive.

I did eventually get ice-cream from a van in the phoenix park so I'm not as angry at Mr. Whippy as I was earlier. He's still a prick though, the prick. Couple of recovery pints in the sun at the hole in the wall too, which was nice. Mmmm drinking in lycra.

Very good turn out today with a good few new faces. Hopefully your impressions of boards' spins aren't too bleak :P and you will give it a go again. It's not always that chaotic either and I promise you and there is usually more cake. Well done everyone.
