I'm nearly finished Dr Zhivago and while it's been pretty alright there are some parts of it I find very annoying. I know it's called Dr. Zhivago and so Yuri is the main focus of the story but the other characters, especially the women, are so poorly developed that it's hard to care. I mean he meets Lara at the army hospital and then BANG! they're in love and she's the best thing since sliced bread but we're never given any real reason as to why she's the best thing since sliced bread. We're just constantly told through other people "ah, sure that Lara girl is only lovely". And when they're told
their lives are in grave danger, they must leave immediately and here's some first class tickets on a luxury train to a really nice place where you can be together or, if you like, you can go and be reunited with your wife and kids.... he says no! FOR WHY?!?! He sends Lara off and stays in a freezing cold house surrounded by wolves all the time expecting to be arrested and shot!!
    It just makes no sense.

That aside... it's not too bad :)

I have finished it now and I stand by what I said earlier. Such stupid decisions made for no apparent reasons and 3 families left hanging because of Yuri. These bloody Russians, they're not subtle at all. All these random characters brought in to have 5 page philosophical discussions every second chapter that lead to nothing. I don't know. I didn't hate it the way I did W&P but I am yet to see the appeal of Russian "classics" .

Dr Zhivago finished me with Russian literature. I won't pick up another one. I agree with you. Yuri has a lot to answer for and some of the decisions he made were just ridiculous.

I am reading the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I can't seem to get into it. It's for cinema book club so I will stick with it, but I just hope I get it finished in time

I'm reading Vanity Fair at the moment. I'm enjoying it but it jumps between 2 connected characters and I have to say I find one infinitely more interesting than the other.

I'm thoroughly enjoying 'nothing on earth' by first time Irish novelist Conor O'Callaghan', nice and short as well.

Finished the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo at the weekend. Didn't live up to the hype for me. I thought it was good but not amazing. I wouldn't be in a mad rush to read the other 2.
Back to Sapiens for a bit. Next I am going to read Asking for It by Louise O'Neill. I hope I am able for it, going from what other people have told me.

I read that a while ago. Read moat of it in one go and couldn't move on to anything new for ages after. It really had an impact on my thinking about how things like that are reported in the media and basically become public property.

    It's really an excellent read.

I think that is my favourite one.

I really want to read the Harry Potters again, and I even tried listening to them while I was walking to work and stuff but it isnt the same!

Not sure what kind of book I want to read next

Options are I Am Pilgrim, Me Before You, Renegade (#2 in a trilogy), The Lost World, Friday Night Lights.

    Help!

I don't even recognise most of those, I'm afraid, but Friday Night Lights is a classic, I would highly recommend it with the caveat that it would definitely help if you like to read about sport.

I'd highly recommend I Am Pilgrim ... one of the best books I've read this year (so far)

+1. It really made me sad thinking about it.

It's on my 'to read' list!

I finished Malice, immediately started Valour and expect to start Ruin tomorrow - all by John Glynn. A slight twist on the good vs evil/battle fantasy - a tad slow to get into, but impossible to put down after you're in.

But someone should tell the author not to name so many of his characters with the same first letter - I really struggled to keep them straight in my head!!

It's not bad but there's a whole section in the middle that should have been cut out to make a much better read.

Easily one of the worst books I've ever read. Opinions eh...

A friend of mine gets annoyed with books going off on tangents, this one is a nightmare for that. I loved it though.

    The section:
with the down syndrome kid, head in noose, standing on an obese nanny's shoulders was laughable.

Finished Lars Keplar's 'Stalker' last week, amazing as usual.

Just want to recommend the whole series to people, some of, if not the best thrillers you'll ever read.

Currently reading 'The Girls' by Emma Cline, intriguing so far.
