Exercise Advice

    Hi all

Just hoping someone may be able to throw a few suggestions out at me. I'm currently trying to up my fitness levels and lose a bit of weight at the same time but finding it difficult due to a sore back. I'm 26 and have suffered with back problems since i was about 10. To be honest, the majority of the time i don't even notice and it doesn't cause me bother, but i'm finding when i exercise, my back is very sore for a few days, which is another few days i cant exercise for.

I really don't want my back problems getting in the way of me getting fit so i'm wondering has anyone any recommendations for what exercise would suit me best. It would be too easy not to exercise whilst blaming back pain, but that would get me nowhere.

I went for a 5km walk last week and that seemed to give me lower back pain, i went to aqua aerobics last night and again today i'm sore enough. Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

    Thanks
    tco

Sorry if this seems like stating the obvious but have you considered going to a physio?? If you're in pain you're in pain for a reason and your probably doing more harm by trying to excercise through it

    Thanks for replying.
If you're in pain you're in pain for a reason

Yes, there is a reason which was only discovered about 6/7 years ago - the last time i was hospitalised with it. Apparently going by my xrays, i was born with a hairline fracture, well two actually, on one of my lower vertabrae. As i grew, my bones obviously did as well, and although on of the fractures fused, in other words fixed itself, the other didn't... and thats what causes my sporadic back pain. Have done physio for a while but because i don't have pain all the time, i don't go to physio all the time. Exercising just seems to set it off. I'm a bit overweight now which obviously isn't helping matters and obviously why i want to exercise and lose some weight.

Its been mentioned that pilates might help strengthen the core muscles (taking some pressure off my back) or swimming could even be good (which i've been doing) but i'm wondering if (a) anyone has any other suggestions or (b) would pilates be something i should consider?

    Thanks again.
