Highpowered Diesel Options (12K)?

Looking at getting a 140bhp+ diesel for around the 12K mark. Octavia Vrs fits the bill but they seem to be very rare. Apart from Golf/A4's is there any decent alternatives?

    A Volvo with the D5 engine (2.4 L)? (S60, S80, V70 etc).

163 BHP in models up to 2004 (or 05, I can't remember), 180 BHP in models after that, as far as I recall.

163bhp, diesel, rwd. Pretty much all the requirements for fun driving and very economical if you don't hammer it in 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

+1 on the 120d, as long as you can live with the looks and lack of space!

The Fiat / Alfa 150 bhp lump hasn't been mentioned. Alfa 147 / 156? You might be even looking at early GT (2004) and 159s (2006) now for around 12k.

100k miles on the clock tho. Would put a lot of people off. And stuff does wear out. Would I buy a car with 100k on the clock for €12k? Probably, but not a BMW 1-series.

i looked at this car, it is immac, absolutely immac!
spec wise its great, upgraded 17" wheels, it has the BMW professional radio, BMW bluetooth and Alcantara (sp) sports seats.

it has 97k on it, but has a complete and full BMW service history all with BMW main dealers, and verified too as i rang them before i viewed it.

the only reason i didnt buy this car is because i got a cracking deal on an E90 320d on the same day! other than that, i would of bought this car back in April.

i even had my friend in BMW M&G check it for me.

Fiat/Alfa 1.9M-JTD 16v is 140 or 150 bhp depending on year and they can be remapped to about 170ish with an extra 60 ft·lb torque

Fiat/Alfa 1.9 JTDM is available in a few versions:

    8 valve is 120bhp
    16 valve is 150bhp

Saab have a new twin turbo version with 189bhp.

Not available new here so you'd be looking at imports:
Renaultsport Megane II 2.0 DCi 175
Renault Laguna II GT 2.0 DCi 175

There is also a Toyota Auris D4D 180 but I think it is a 2.2 and it'd also have to be an import.

i got an e60 530d, early teens doe.....goes like a rocket and would destroy the vw diesels etc. Beast of a yoke.

    If your going sub 2 litre....I'd for a 16v 2.0 vw diesel.....avoid the 150bp PD 1.9, 130bhp 1.9 way way better.

just have a root around re the differences......i had a 150 it was all on or all off re power delivery. All the folk say the 130 is smoother and a better unit and not such a live wire. The 150 is only an 8 valve 1.9 so she's working hard.....my tupennce

    Thanks Guys,

Plenty good options there but still think its going to be either an Octavia VRS (if I can find one!) or an Alfa GT.

Also the 150 needs more a service every 6k or so to avoid ruining the cams and tappets.

In fairness the 130 can also suffer from camshaft / follower failures. Although probably not to the same extent allright.

Not sure how the 6k service will help? In fact I thought most in the know reccomended 10k to allow all the additives in the oil to be activated blah blah etc etc.

All of them can suffer from hydraulic tappet failure and corresponding camshaft wear really (my old 110 tdi had it:P) but it reputadely happens a lot quicker on the 150. The 6k service was what was recommended on Vagdrivers.net. I reakon the failures were more down to owners/garages not using the correct oil than high service intervals anyway.

I looked into getting one and was a bit scared off by the stories of tappets and camshafts, there were a lot of stories of dealers replacing the entire cyl head, for some reason, and bills running into the thousands.

Motor tax is about 25% the purchase price, per annum!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,800 ✭✭✭voxpop

I wonder what percentage of the cars with worn camshafts/tappets had remaps ?

My one is fine so far (touch wood) - I service every 10k and have 120k miles. Second gear has gotten very notchy of late though - time for gearbox oil change me thinks

Edit - i have a 130 and the lag is just bearable and power delivery is a bit lumpy, I can only imagine that the 150s are worse in both respects. Good fun can be had, though, once you keep it on the boil

my beef with the 150 tdi was it was always nibbling to drive it hard. The pwr band was awful and I only averaged 33mpg in mixed driving....where as the bigger diesels have a much juicier range of torque. Yes i agree car tax is a big issue these days but you can get the bigger diesels for a song now off dealers so it all averages out imo. That 3.0 diesel from bm i cant compliment more.....the worst diesel I had was the e220cdi...total slug unless chipped.

I wonder where my old golf is these days 03 D 150?? Probably written off as she was a quick demon all the same but understeer was her weakness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,000 ✭✭✭omega man

I used to own a Leon TDI150 and never experienced any of the above issues. Had it 2 years and was averaging 45mpg even with a remap to 185bhp. Servicing was at 10K intervals and i never had any tech problems. Saying that the 130 model is better is total crap imo. To date this is the only car i was ever sad to let go. However times have changed and the new generation 2.0 tdi's are a lot better. Personally I would recommend the octavia vRS TDI. I had the petrol one and it was a fantastic all rounder.

you know your onions re these diesels....i cant comment from experience but if you trawl the net re different forums etc, they all have the same theme, the 130 was a better drive. How you got in the mid 40's mpg is amazing. I genuinely never got over 40...averaged 34mpg all the way.

yes, BUT its 40-50mpg for economy, 192hp for fun and sofa for life! :D

If you would buy that, you wouldnt be looking for anything else for a good time.

The BMW M57 type Engine is a straight-6 Diesel produced from 1998. It won the "2.5-3 L" category of the International Engine of the Year award for 1999 through 2002. (wiki)

Iam looking for a second car, for fun, like mx5 or 200sx, but more and more i am looking at these 530d myself, and i really dont care about Tax on it, considering the packadge you get.

Compared to M5's/Evo's its not, but compared to most things on the road its pretty quick.7 secs to 60 and top speed of 140mph, is impressive for here!!

Go with your original thought OP, Octavia VRS are class.

It will cost you around 13-14k but well worth it for a good 07 example.
