Fitness and Heading on Holidays

I have been trying to implement a bit of a fitness regime recently (free weights and a bit of running, along with a better diet and protein shakes). I'm making good progress.

However I'm heading off to the States for almost 3 weeks in August and am worried that this blip will cause me to lose most of the gains I have made.

    Anyone have any tips?

    Yep.
Do some research on gyms in the area before you go.
I've been in gyms from Thailand to Peru, I am sure the States will have some :)

Well anytime i'm away for an extended period and want to maintain shape, I do body-weighted exercises first thing in the morning before showering. Always found it good.

Usually start off with the plank (advanced = put feet on the bed, or just put hands 20-30 mm higher than you normally would). I'd normally follow these with leg raises while lying flat on my back. Excellent for core.
    Supermans will work the back.

Then I do 3-4 different types of pressups. Start off with 10 standard ones. Then do 10 with your feet on the bed. If you have 2 chairs nearby, do 10 with a hand on each chair. Put hands on the bed if you don't have chairs.
Then finish with 10 where your hands are side by side on the ground. These 4 will work all parts of your chest.

There would be some other stuff I might throw in, but 20 mins or so of the above in the morning will defo be of some help, especially if gym visits are out of the question.

    Thanks lads.

Some great advice there Fizman, that's exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. Must save that stuff. :)

I'll try and go to a gym when I can, but being on holiday and especially the fact that we will be driving a lot from place to place means it will be difficult to get a gym routine going.

Those hotel room exercises will definitely come in handy.

If you visit a gym on your travels ask them if you can try it out for a free session before signing up ;)

--> You can work out for free as you travel around.

As one of my friends would say, sneaky rats, sneaky rats! :D

    Sounds like a plan!

Maybe food is not a concern for you but if it is, try to cook for yourself as much as possible, as it is extremely difficult to get fresh vegetables in restaurants (at least around the Pacific Northwest). All you can get is "salad" which is basically a bowl of leaves and whatever you do, ask for the dressing on the side. Nobody likes a flavour puddle.

I managed to get almost 2 months free in NY by using various trials and so on. It's easily doable and most of the gyms over there piss on most of the gyms over here.*

    * with emphasis on most
