porridge and losing weight?

    Background info - have lost over 3 stone since christmas through fitness (weights/running/cycling routine) and cleaning up my diet. For the last 2 months I've stalled at 13 stone (5ft 10")and just looking at my diet. I have a huge bowl of jumbo oats w/ mashed banana ( circa 90g) each morning and was wondering if this is bad for weight loss. The rest of my diet is reasonably good i.e. plenty fruit, cottage cheese,veg, tuna/chicken breast/salmon filllet for dinner with 50g portion of brown rice, water ect.I do also let myself go a little on Sundays as a treat but my weight has remained constant at 13 stone.

    The key word is "Huge", on a weight loss diet nothing should be huge-have a small bowl and you'll cut loads of calories and still have a nutritious breakfast.

    Most people eat far more cereal than they think. And if you think you are eating a huge portion, you probably are eating a mega amount. Try weighing the amount of oats before you cook them. Or use a few berries instead of the banana.

    I'd also take a close look at your Sunday treat. It's easy to throw away a week's dieting with a couple of treats.

    Do you mean 90g of oats uncooked? :eek: I use about 35g of oats and make my porridge with water - it's a very good size bowl and you save the calories by not using milk.

    I have about the same but with skimmed milk. Does this make it alot more fattening?

    I am currently bulking and eat about 150grams of oats uncooked for breakfast:pac::pac:
    With full fat Milk also and I have a bodyfat % of 7-8%. I need the calories:P

    A standard bowl of cereal is approx 30g. This includes uncooked weight of porridge. Maybe you need to cut back on your portion size? Also, use skimmed milk rather than full fat.

    i found making porridge with water really horrible and couldn't eat it so instead i mix mine with half milk and half water - still gets nice and creamy but got to be better than all that milk!

    You can make pancakes with the oats. My liquidiser packed in and I am now must mixing the rolled oats with an egg and a little water and frying them.

    The worst I saw lately was on one of those small cereal boxes that are designed to be a handy 1-person size, it was Nestle Oats & More, so a nice healthy-looking box.

    The nutritional information quoted was for 35g, yet the box was 50g... I could barely believe it and now refuse to eat it on principal! Imagine all the people out there watching their calorie intake, thinking they are getting it bang on but getting nearly half as much again, just because they didn't look at the bottom of the box as well as the back...

    In fact I've just googled for nutritional information on it and got a US version, showing a portion size as 28g (1/2 a cup)! Incidentally this small amount alone has 120 cals, 3g fat and 7g sugar. I think I'll be throwing that one out when I get in!

    :eek::eek:I switched to muesli from organic cornflakes/eggs in recent weeks and put on weight. Am beginning to see why!

    Muesli is the devil, the recommended portion size is so small it just looks like a dirty bowl. At least with eggs, you can see exactly what your portion is.

    75g Jumbo oats 290calories
    200 ml semi skimmed milk 100cal
    1/2 funsized banana 50cal
    Thats around 450 cals for one v filling breakfast which sets me up for the day.I need to feel full or I'll start snacking. Any other breakfast alternatives?

    if you're lifting weights depending on your build 13 stone wouldn't be heavy for somebody 5'10.

    you prob need to refine what you eat and how much. staying in shape requires regular fine tuning of diet and exercise.
    can't eat the same thing and exercise the same or we'd never progress

    I'd look at the 50g of brown rice before i'd go eliminating the porridge. although your dose seems huge and cold be halved.
