How are you coming along tunney? Although you probably wouldn't agree at the moment, I think you have someone praying mighty hard for you. Your accident could have been a lot worse. Here's hoping you make it to Austria.

HM, best of luck with your 2 events - you nutter! :D

Update on the Boards competitors at IM Germany and Austria yesterday:

Hunnymonster finishes IM Germany in a 11:17. Another mighty performance in hot conditions. Just 1 week of recovery before IM Switzerland on Sunday next.
The male winner ran a 2:43 marathon to finish in 7:59:eek:

Tunney sadly seemed to have called it a day after the swim in Austria. I'm sure though he took some value on the experience of been part of the occasion. Hopefully he'll bounce back straight away.
Just to mention the Irish IM record seems to have been broken by Liam Dolan. He got around in 9:02 after a blistering 4:41 for the bike section.

I think Tunney was involved in an incident in T1 and ended up back in hospital....shame if it turns out that this is the case.

Another savage performance over the weekend saw Mark Riseley from 3D qualify for Kona with a 9.18 in Frankfurt.

Is there any criteria for records in Tri/inronman in regards to the courses ? 9:02 is savage .

Unsure shels4ever but a flat course is a must. Tri's / IM races start and finish in same place so elevation isn't an issue unlike some marathons.

The world record was an IM is 7:50.

9'02 is still savage for a guy who is not a PRO and he now has a Kona place if he wants it. Now that would be some aim to have!

Yes totally savage, Wasn't getting at anything in regards to his times, was just a general question in regards to how WR are done in these events.

From a little research it seems the Ironman record of 7:50:27 by Luc van Lierde was achieved at Ironman Europe which has now lost its Ironman status (it's own decision, it didn't want to pay the m-dot corporation so much) and now it's the Quelle Challenge Roth.

I've heard Roth is "short" though. Not sure how they manage this. I think there is some tolerance in the length of each leg. 2% maybe? That could make a huge difference for the run for example. Not sure though. Don't quote me on it.

Austria ia NOT flat, bike is very very hilly. 9:02 is simply because Dolan is an animal.

Unfortunately true. Austrian hospitals are excellent.

Some oaf poughed into me in T1, and pushed me over. Landed on a wheel. There is a reason they are called bladed spokes........... Sliced my kneecap to the bone. Blood everywhere. Absolutely manky wound. Yucky. Was taken to medical tent. Doctors told me my race was over. I told them "I've just swam 3.8km with a fractured collar bone, its not f*&king over". He sowed my knee up and made me promise to go to the hospital after the race. Got out of medical tent 2 hours into the race. Tried my best on the bike. But knew after a few km I was gone. Cried my eyes out until I finally had to pack it at 56km. There is only so much one legged cycled you can do. Stopped and got an ambulance to hospital. Spent most of Sunday there but got to watch Liam and Rich finish. Was back there this morning. On all manner of drugs, (get to inject mself with Hebron daily now), and in terrible pain again. Totally devastated that everything I worked for to get here, to break a collar bone and work to get back from it but to have some ignorant pr!ck end my race and my IM dream is crushing.

Ah for fecks sake. Sorry to hear that Tunney. It never ceases to amaze me how when a bad streak of luck hits it really hits. Get yourself fit and healthy again and you'll be back stronger and more determined than before.

    Look on the brightside Tunney.
The next time you compete in an ironman, there'll be no broken bones and no idiot trying to knee-cap you.

It'll be like gaining an hour.

Sorry to hear about all your troubles. I hope everything mends well for you soon

Tunney, the fact that you made it 56k into the bike after the litany of incidents you have says something about your courage and perhaps stubborness!! It shows just how much you dedicate yourself to something you want and I understand how devastated you must feel especially after such a meticulous preparation. I can't guess what your own belief system says to you but it sure does seem like this attempt wasn't meant to be. As hard as it may be to see now but I'm certain that you will fulfill your IM dream only now you will be stronger and it will feel unbelievable given the obstacles you have had to overcome. The next tears you shed I'm sure will be those of joy. I hope the injury heals quickly and that you take a break and recover your heart and mind.

There is no doubt in my mind you will be back!

    Best wishes

Wow sorry to hear that , The is somethign abotu oen of events like ironman and marathon that you always have that risk, but for 2 things to happen your so so unlucky.

i cant believe how unlucky you were , the fact that you swam the IM leg with a broken collar bone and biked 56k with a hacked up knee says oceans bout your stamina and endurance , really hope you recover well and that your next IM attempt will be a success , IM Austria has certainly will have prepared you well .

Jaysus tunney, my heart goes out to you. Talk about a run of bad luck. You showed serious courage to do the swim in the first place and then to go 56k on one leg is savage. You're day will come, and very soon I hope. There is no way that you could have a bad run of luck like that again. Hopefully you bounce back soon and get fully recovered to return even stronger. Best wishes!

A pal of mine took part in this and was observing that Liam Dolan's results include a 37 min half marathon (first half). There seems to be some glitch in the results for Liam from what I can see if you look more closely at the details.

Don't want to take anything away from an obviously fine race by Liam but was just interested in hearing what might have happened,

    Mick.

That probably explains it so. It was the marathon time that caused my friend some surprise. He was stunned that someone could run a 2:18 marathon in an Ironman.

Congrats to Liam on a great race...

i thought the same when i saw it..still though you would not expect that to happen in an IRONMAN Corp. event...maybe it was laps and his chip didn't catch the first lap and caught the second????

11:17, which is slower than Florida last year but I'm not sure if she was aiming at last week or this week as the biggie (or just planning on getting through both)

Liam pointed this out ot them in the finishers tent and asked them to change the splits. A 50 minute T2?? and a 2:18 marathon?? They told him no, they wouldn't fix it. He ran 3:06 I think really.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,051 ✭✭✭MCOS

The result is fantastic, 9'02 whatever way the splits were but seriously I'm amazed with how many times with this topic in conversation this week I've heard 'did you hear he ran a 2'18 marathon?!'. Not in the 'curious to what glitch occured in the results' context but actually believing it was just a tad fast for a marathon!!!

3'06 in its own right is good running let alone off a 180k bike and even more so off a blistering 4'41 non flat 180k bike  Its the bike split that jumps off the page for me as the amzing split. I was just suprised that so many people didn't seem to grasp the concept of a marathon, granted it was everyone who has not done a marathon.

Well done to Liam Dolan on theirish record and to Mark Riesley for his 9'18 in Frankfurt too, 2 top notch results
