I'm surprised no one has created a Wimbledon thread yet, might as well get in there first :D

With Nadal out, Federer has moved into a price of 10/11 to win the tournament. While this is short, there are very few who have the calibre to oppose him on grass. However, given his so-so form during the previous year, I couldn't possibly bring myself to back him. After Soderling, the 1000/1 shot made the finals at Roland Garros, I definitely think it's possible that we may see an outsider progress to the final. With that in mind, I have a few longshot outright bets.

Dimitrov @ 2000/1 - Virtually unknown Russian teenager who won the Wimbledon boys title last year. I got on him early, knowing that he'd get a wildcard entry (usually the previous years Boys/Girls winner gets a wildcard to the Mens/Womens). I've never even seen the kid play, but if he's good enough to wins the Boys final, he certainly has a schnifter of a chance. Could be the next Borg :P

Chardy @ 1000/1 - Backed him before the draw, it was just my luck that he drew an in-form Andy Roddick. An awful lot will depend on just fast the surface plays at Wimbledon. If it's anything near as fast as Queens, Chardy might struggle. His form hasn't been too impressive as of late though.

Kohlschreiber @ 650/1 - Notched up an excellent straight sets win against Djokovic at the French. Also put in a respectable showing at the grasscourt opener in Halle. He should have won at Halle other than a ridiculous run of points saw Tommy Haas steal the title away. I think that he's going to be a super-tough opponent and has more than enough to blow the lower ranked players away.

    Bets for the day:

Laying Fish to beat Roitman @ 1.04. Fish is in great form and will enjoy the grass, but there's no way anyone could ever back a non-entity like him at a price so low.

Laying Federer to beat Lu 3-0 in sets @ 1.1. Fed could just be a little rusty here. His set record this year suggests that this price is just way too short.

Laying Peya to beat Haas @ 1.06. Haas can go from sublime to ridiculous. 1.06 is simply too short here.

Backing over 0.5 tie breakers in Ljubicic v Querry at 4/7 (paddypower). Big servers on grass courts - we simply have to see one tie break.

The odds are so wretched I could never bring myeelf to bet on tennis.

Arrghhh - Fed match has started and Lu broke him only to be broken straight back!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,853 ✭✭✭✭8-10

I don't know a whole lot about tennis but my mate does so I've gotten her to go through the first round to pick some near-bankers. I did a big combo at Roland Garros which came off.

So I have 11/1 or so on the following all winning: Roddick, Davydenko, Del Potro, Tsonga, Haas T, Verdasco, Söderling, Garcia-Lopez, Kohlschreiber, Safin, Tipsarevic, Ferrer & Llodra.

Saying that I think the OP has the right idea of laying short odds bets. For example Lu is really putting it up to Fed in the first set and to take one set off him is amazing value at 9/1 in my opinion.

Just mention the beeb are showing something like 6 matches at once via the red button for those who like in game betting.

edit - just spotted that PP are taking the bbc coverage on the live betting page.

Even though he's had his chances, it doesn't look like Lu is going to do enough here to take a set  Having said that though, Federer is not at all convincing. Lu is probably one of the worse players in the tournament.

del potro would be my tip if he can reproduce some of his recent form.
His height is a huge advantage and his rock solid serve looks unstoppable when hit right.
Murray has a chance too imo

Anyone else Federer doesn't represent great value even at 1.8 on betfair?

I'm thinking of laying him at that price or maybe when it shortens towards the end of the week. Could always back him again later on in the tournament.

Stuck a fiver on Tommy Haas for the crack at 100/1 on betfair

I have a feeling an outsider will do well this year and Haas is a good player and is a lively longshot imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,148 ✭✭✭✭Raskolnikov

Del Potro has virtually no experience on grass courts other than falling at the first hurdle at Wimbledon. Having said that though, his game could really suit grass. I saw him completely overpower Tsonga at the French (how many players in the world could do that, 2 or 3?). With that power and his natural ability - I think he's definitely more value than Murray @ 3/1.

I wouldnt oppose Federer at Wimbledon with Nadal out. The guy has only been beaten once here in years and that was in last years epic final. Who will beat him?

Murray is like the English soccer team - all hype, he consistently gets blown away by either Nadal/Federer in the Slams.

Theres a good chance that an outsider will get to the final this year but only because nadal is out.

Personally i think that federer at anywhere near evens offers good value for money based on the simple fact that unless he goes insane no one in the draw is capable of beating him on grass

I see Safin has a back injury coming into his match today. If he retires, do the bookies pay out on Lavine win?

    Thinking of a double - Lavine and Vasallo-Arguelo @ 5/1

Betfair pays out unless the retirement is in the first set.

Blue Square, Coral and Ladbrokes will as long as the match has started.

Betfair, Betfred, Skybet and Totesport if at least one set has been played.

My picks are doing absolutely awful so far :( At least with backing long shots, I only need one or two to put me in profit. Anyway, bets for the next few days.

Laying Federer to beat G-Lopez 3-0 @ 1.21 - Like I said earlier, not at all convinced of Federer, he struggled for awhile against Lu (who is totally useless). G-Lopez may be able to knick a set here.

Backing Del Potro to beat Hewitt @ 1.5 - Hewitt is washed up and has done nothing for years. Potro on the otherhand is a rising star and has an awesome looping forehand that can blow most away.

Laying Soderling against Granollers @ 1.09 - Looks far too short.

Had a bit of a stroke yesterday, racing post tipped Sam Querrey to beat Lubicic, backed him with bruce at 8/11 , had 100 quid on him, lubicic pulled out before match and was replaced by some thai no hoper who he promptly beat in straight sets, was not picked up on that querrey beat a replacement and duly paid out on.

That's a shocking mistake! Just be glad that Querrey didn't pull out, otherwise you would probably have been down a hundred squids.

Oh, I also have Koubek to beat Robredo @ 5.0 for today.

After winning the Levine/Argallo double yesterday, going for an accumulator:

Del Potro, Becker, Berdych, Ferrero @ 5/1.

Don't think federer broke a sweat against lopez. Fierce boring match.
He looks in good shape for a long run.
    Hard to back against him

My Tip for Wimbledon on Monday is

    I Andreev 23/10 to beat T Haas

I also like a double of

I Karlovic is 4/6 to beat F. Verdasco
A Roddick is 1/2 to beat T Berdych

    €1 returns €2.50.

Anyone hear that sue barker one on about "will federer be worried about playing murray in the final?"
Unbelievable. Doesn't matter what sport.Always at it, blowing up their own ( even though he's scottish), and most of the time only for a big anti climax.
I think murray is in there with a shout but has a possibility of three tough games before the final and as of yet he hasn't proved he has the game to go the full 7 matches in a grand slam.
Frustrating listening to talk of him being in the final when we're in the fourth round

if you look at his side of the draw though id def say he has an easier side of the draw than Federer since Nadal has withdrawn. I'm not saying I think he'll def get to the final but I do think that he should be capable of beating everyone who is left on his side of the draw.

i totally agree. I have no problem with him. He's a top player. He has brilliant aggression in his play and a backhand to match.
It's the public and media that act the annoying twits.
(wawrinka just after taking him to a fifth set.)
    I don't think he'll make the final.
I know he can, just don't think he will

hes a break up in the fifth at the moment. assuming he goes on to win the 5th set he has Ferrero in the 1/4s. Thats the easiest player he could have got in the 1/4s i reckon though I also don't think haas is that strong either.
if you look at the styles of play you'd have to fancy murry to win that one and if he does he DOES have a tough semi final granted against Roddick or Hewitt but tbh semi final of a grand slam who ever you play it should be a tough one.

Having a couple of punts in the Federer match

Karlovic to win a set - 5/4 I have a feeling there will be a couple of tie-breakers (a bet in itself) and the big-seving Croat may be able to nick one

First set tie-break EVENS Bet 365

Think the first set will go with serve, especially with Ivo bangin in the aces

I just got on Djokovic at 1/2 against Haas in an effort to reverse my awful Wimbledon run.

I know he's recently lost to Haas on grass, but this is a grandslam and a whole different kettle of fish.

I think Safina is a great price today to beat Venus. We all know that the Williams sisters are A1+ on grass sure. But Safina can match Williams' power and has an all round game to go along with it...

Safina bet her last time out - on clay however. They have never played against each other on grass.

4/1 is a great price. Going to see if I can lay some of it off if Safina starts well too...
