What was the best point ever scored in a hurling championship match?

I would have to give the nod to Wexford's Eoin Quigley :

    Any other contenders?

All great points, but from what's posted so far, Brodericks point wins it imo. Pure skill at its finest.

Also, to embed youtube vids, copy the embed link (the one with the object weight, target etc) and wrap youtube tags around it.

When i saw the thread title i immediately thought of Quigleys point. As Michael Duignan said "Marty i think that's one of the best scores i've ever seen in Croke Park".

Brodericks and O' Sullivans are also worth honourable mention. Brodericks is all about skill and touch where O' Sullivans is all about power. What a shoulder.

Eamon Cregans (aged about 35) point in the 1980 final against Galway, got the ball out near the stand and Conor Hayes was coming like a bull to kill him, Cregan lifted hand and hurl as if he was hitting it off the right, dummied and just tapped it over off his left from near the sideline. Poetry in motion. For sheer excitement its Careys point against Clare in 96, I was lucky enough to be there. Being from Kerry its not many great hurling moments you get to see in the flesh.

rocks point is amazing, but for sheer brilliance, i would give it to Carey. its perhaps the most famous hurling score of all time IMO.

Without trying to sound biased or anything, I couldn't let this topic go without posting this point:

It's not so much a single great piece of skill by one player, but more so the culmination of one of the best hurling matches we'll ever see. To get the full effect of it, watch the clip from the puckout at 2.33. Just sheer and utter commitment from both sides. Like I said it wasn't the point itself that made it so great, just the occasion, the teams, the performances all coming together.

You can see the way the terrace erupted after the point went over, it was an absolutely huge moment in the game. One moment Cork were literally within inches of blasting the ball in the back of the net and winning the game, but within 7-8 seconds, Prendergast pointed to put us two points clear.

Now we're talking bai. This is the point I thought of when I saw the thread. The greatest game of hurling of all time. The catch by Ken to finish it off is a fitting end to a mesmerising 70 minutes of unreal sport.

Henry Shefflins point against waterford from the half way line under the hogan stand

Its a toss up between the Rocks and Careys. I was on the city end terrace of Pairc Ui Chaoimh behind the goal O'Sullivan was defending for the his magnificent point in 2001. Never seen such a shoulder in all my life, Jack Foley just bounced off him! I remember my father saying to me 'where's that ball going to land?' Couldn't believe it when it went over. I also had the priviledge of seeing Ciaran Carey's point in '96. The match was one of the most bruising and toughest encounters i've ever seen, played on a sweltering hot day. Considering it was right at the end of the match, in such energy draining conditions, Carey's ability to field the ball, carry it for 70 yards and finish sweetly off the hurley has to be the greatest point of all time.

Yup, agree with this (well, of the points I remember in my time anyway). Plus it was to win the match. Though I'll always remember Broderick's point as well, awesome skill as well but maybe without the surrounding circumstances that Carey's had.

On a side note (and not trying to stir it), was the Rock even shooting? I've always had my doubts as he doesn't seem to really take aim despite the space he's in...

    you're having a laugh right?

Not at all. Hearing that judge go on about it in that video is cringeworthy stuff. Time standing still, people holding their breath around the ground, give me a break.

I'm not denying it was a good point, but like grenache said, it was made to look good by some pretty mediocre defending. Any good defender with even a shred of pace would have got goal side of DJ and force him to play it backwards. But instead Baker falls on his backside and suddenly there's no player within 10 metres of him. Yet because it came from DJ Carey we're supposed to marvel at the utter genius of the man.

Some were great for there skill in execution-Quigley, some for power-Sullivan, and some for speed and balance-Broderick. For me the best points consist of these attributes and also the relevance of the score. We've all seen fellas score wonder points when up 10 points in a league game but to do it with the pressure on is something else. Fot this reason Carey v Limerick in 1996 or even Jamesy v Tipp have to be up there.

Mighty score. I'd put it at number 3 with Carey's against Clare in '96 at 2.

Ciaran Carey v Clare 1996 and Eamon Morrissey for Kilkenny v Wexford 1993. Not a stunning individual point but the greatest "team point" - if there's such a thing - ever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 850 ✭✭✭pajoguy

All those scores were great but Carey's stands out for the simple reason that nobody should ever need a youtube link for it. It lives on in our memories. The drama of it has never been surpassed I think. Back when championship meant one shot and no back door, down by three ppints to defending AI champs Clare and Limerick get it level. Most teams would have settled for the draw but Carey thought different. It was magic. Great days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,942 ✭✭✭topper75

I also think Carey wins - context is important. A Hollywood scriptwriter wouldn't have created such a context.

The Rock's (special commendation) was fantastic, esp the shouldercharge before the outrageous drive. The fair shouldercharge is a fantastic aspect of Gaelic games. It's the ultimate in manliness and I would love to see more of it. Of course, if you don't catch the opponent square on, it can be quite ugly.

BTW - who is the Limerick no. 18 that gets bundled out of it?

Its Jack Foley of Adare. Think a brother of Mark. I was right behing the goal that day and we roared when foley went to shoulder him and then stood for a minute with our mouths open as we watched what we thought was the start of the rebel comeback. Thankfully Limk held on.

Oh God yeah..that game broke my heart. I watched in Galway and I had a particular hatred for Waterford at the time. At least we joined forced with some Clare supporters after the game who hated Waterford even more than I did...:o

At least I was in Croke Park later that September to watch Cork beating Kilkenny....happy days...we had the last laugh.

In my living memory, it has to be Ciaran Carey

All of the other scores mentioned here were all very good in their own right but none as good as Ciaran Carey's

For DJ's, Baker fell on his hole. DJ had lots of time to hit it.
For Brodericks, Kilkenny were well beaten already
For Quigley and Sully, although they were both great strikes, I'm not convinced either one of them were going for the score

But Carey's was just pure class.

First Round of the Munster Championship
Playing the All Ireland Champions in a packed Gaelic Grounds
    Scores level
Last few minutes of the game on a Scorching hot day

If he tapped over a 21 yard free it would have been memorable. To score a point like that was just off the scale altogether.

I'm Clare man. So I kind of have mixed feelings every time I see it.

    Not a point - a goal, but a classic nonetheless ....

Liam Burke in 1991. Cusack Park looked a lot different then.

For me it was John Power for the Cats.
Don't remember against who or in what year (probably 2000/2002) but he was hobbling off injured on the left wing when ball comes to him in broken play.

He lifts the ball and places it over the bar without any foot movement (cause he'd done his hamstring or something) and without looking at the ball flying through the air, hobbles off injured.

Pure class! One of the greatest and most true hurlers of all time!

That fella John Power didn't get his due in praise at all. His consistency and dedication were inspirational. He'd hurl away no matter how much trouble his team was in. I won't forget him too handy and I'm a Limerick man.
