GAA Football & Hurling Senior Championship Qualifier Draws

The GAA has confirmed that the draws for Round 1 of Football Qualifier and Phase 1 and 2 of Hurling Qualifier will take place on Sunday next, 21 June 2009 in Páirc na nGael, Limerick following the Munster Senior Hurling Semi Final. The Draws will be shown live on TV3 at 6.05pm approximately.

    The details are as follows:
    Football Qualifers Round 1:
Includes all counties who have not qualified for Provincial Semi Final: Down, Carlow, Monaghan, Offaly, Longford, London, Waterford, Tipperary, Leitrim, Armagh, Fermanagh, Meath, Wicklow, Louth, Wexford and Donegal.
This is an open draw (no restriction of any description on possible pairings) – 8 games – first county drawn in each pairing has home venue, provided the venue meets the criteria set down by the National Infrastructure Committee.

    Hurling Qualifiers – Phase 1:
Includes first round losers: Cork, Offaly, Laois and Antrim.
This is also an open draw – 2 games - first County drawn in each pairing has home venue, provided the venue meets the criteria set down by the National Infrastructure Committee. The winners qualify for Phase 3.

    Hurling Qualifiers – Phase 2:
This draw includes the defeated Provincial Semi Finalists: Kilkenny/Galway, Wexford/Dublin, Tipperary/Clare and Limerick/Waterford.
This is an open draw – 2 games - first County drawn in each pairing has home venue, provided venue meets the criteria set down by the National Infrastructure Committee. The winners qualify for Phase 3.

The hurling qualifier system is crazy. It would seem that by losing your first round provincial game you get an easier qualifer draw as opposed to winning your first round game and then losing the semi final.

It's a joke. In the football, the further you go in the province, the less qualifying games you have, but this way they're punishing you for trying to reach your own final. A part of me is actually hoping Laois and Antrim are drawn together, just to show how flawed the whole system is.

The hurling looks good to me. :)

I'd like to see that as well, Cork could do with as many tough games as possible.

Best draw could have got. Though I wouldn't call Offaly a tough game...even at home.

    Football qualifiers round 1.

    Donegal V Carlow
    Monaghan V Armagh
    Meath V Waterford
    Wicklow V Fermanagh
    Wexford V Offaly
    Louth V Tipp
    London V Down
    Leitrim V Longford

No I'm possibly overestimating them if anything in not saying it'll be a rout. Offaly have a few handy hurlers but nowhere near enough to put up a decent enough challenge.

Will be good run out for Cork all the same for the first 50 mins til they pull away big time.

tv3 are either desperate or they wanted to get a someone whos class at football ha.. :D id say desperate but sure it could be the other option as well. Why the hell is the commentator telling us about his problems with the pages of information he has?? Its annoying... I dont really wanna know about it.. :P

There's no problem with the computer Trevor just can't get close enough to the screen to read it properly with his fat arse. It's grand now we have the expertise of Peter Sweeney (no I've never heard of the curly little bugger before either) now:pac:

TV3 are just full of fail.

Trever Welch doing the draw was an embaressment.

When are the second round games on?

    Two weeks from now.

I think its the first Saturday in July (4th) but dont hold me to that.

After a shocker first day out, i'd be happy with Carlow. But certainly will take nothing for granted after Antrim.

Monaghan Armagh the tie of the round there. Tough one to call.

True that. Sure they got rid of that Sports LastNight thing coz they couldn't fit his face on camera anymore and had no replacement who'd be willing to fake a semblance of knowledge the way Trev does. He actually said "and here's John Gilligan for Clare"...seriously wtf?!

    we get armagh :(

Its not hard to call at all. Why does anybody think that Monaghan are a good football team. They ran Kerry close for 65mins in 2007. Thats it. Yet every year we're led to believe they are one of the top teams even though they're after getting knocked out of the Ulster championship in the first round 2 years in a row.
    Armagh to win comfortably.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 893 ✭✭✭joey54

Armagh should come through the first round. Think it will be a close enough game and very competitive. Hopefully a good one for the neutrals.

Because he's a Limerick footballer and the draw was made in Limerick, I'd imagine. Tough draw for Cork, Offaly will be well up for it. If it's played in Tullamore it mightn't suit Cork, that pitch looked tight on TV last night.
Clare v Galway the stand-out tie though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 517 ✭✭✭lisbon_lions

It is definitely 4th july (not 11th)

Why does anybody think that Monaghan are a good football team.
er because they are? They are not an easy team to travel to and take a result from.
    Armagh to win comfortably.
    Care to predict?

can anybody explain the hurling draw to me please ? the draw states that the winners of phase 1(2 teams) will play the winners of phase 2(2 teams) in phase 3 . the winners of phase 3 will emerge to play in the quarter finals against the 4 provincial finalists . this system means that only two teams can emerge from phase 3 yet there are 4 teams in to play in the quarter final . somebody explain please ;(

the winners of the provincials (leinster and munster) go straight to the all-ireland semis..
    Is that what you mean?

yes, exactly. I think its abit stupid but the gaa make up the rules..

When the football teams were drawn, Trev had to say 'hold on a sec while I get to the page that tells me who Donegal's manager is and who they lost to in the last round' etc.

Pathetic. I think he was only able to reel off some 'info' about the teams drawn a handful of times. And to admit on air that you were scrambling for the 'info'....

Waterford deservedly beat Limerick on Sunday. Now if Waterford get beaten by Tipp in the Munster final then its likely that they will be up against a fair good team in the All Ireland 1/4 finals.

However from this draw it looks that its possible that if Limerick beat Wexford and then are drawn against Laois/Antrim and then Dublin in the 1/4s (Limerick cannot get drawn against Waterford in the 1/4s if Waterford lose the Munster final) Limerick could be in a Semi Final. Crazy?!?!?!?

That's the first round of the qualifiers, he was asking about the second round, which are on the 11th.

I was thinking the exact same thing when Waterford out of all teams made it to the all-ireland final last year when they got beat fairly by a clare team that deserved their win who then got kicked outta the championship in the quarter final. Crazy?!?!?!?

Don't worry. Wexford will make sure no injustices will happen. It will be like last year again wait and see.

Thats a fact, Galway in Cusack Park should be easy enough - sure keep Canning quiet and Galway are a bunch of tossers.

canning had two defenders from the best hurling county marking him yesterday . .yet he scored 2-9 . can't wait to see what he'll do to the clare defence :D , a brve comment but reality is that no clare man will take canning .

Remember in 2007 when Clare did a job on Galway in Cusack park?? It's very hard to beat any Clare team in Ennis. There will be one hostile partisan atmosphere in Cusack Park on the 11th of July I'll tell ya.

They might even narrow the pitch again:pac:

Welcome to the world of the GAA ;)

In fairness, whoever loses the Munster final will have a very tough route to the AI final. They'll have to meet a very fresh qualifier off the back of two hard games in the quarters, and even if you get through that, then they'll have to meet Kilkenny in the AI semis, assuming they win Leinster.

You can see what a difference the qualifiers made to Waterford last year. Our matches were getting progressively harder while we got progressively stronger, and that was a huge factor in beating a Tipp side that had just had a months break.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 804 ✭✭✭yerayeah

As a Kerry fan, I'm delighted the 2 teams we really do not want to see in the next round drew each other... And hopefully whoever comes through Armagh Monaghan will pick up a few suspensions along the way:p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,255 ✭✭✭✭Lemlin

    My predictions:

    Winners in bold

    Donegal V Carlow
    Monaghan V Armagh
    Meath V Waterford
    Wicklow V Fermanagh
    Wexford V Offaly
    Louth V Tipp
    London V Down
    Leitrim V Longford

I could see a shock or two though. For example, Wicklow will give Fermanagh a good game and Monaghan Armagh could go either way. Leitrim and Longford will be very close too.

Donegal and Down will progress relatively easily, as will Wexford.

Anyone know where the Louth game is likely to be played? Wonder will there be a repeat of the debacle in Drogheda last year?

I just used the comment you quoted to spite that ocheallachain guy but sure I see your point :p.. ah sure, Limerick won't beat Wexford at home. They will probably screw it up as usual.. I dunno if I'll even go to be honest. Might check out the clare v. galway game. Sure thats like 10mins away from me :D Better than travelling all the way to wexford park which could turn out a defeat.(but I hate missing limerick matches so I'll probably be stuck with a guilty concience:cool:).

By progressivly harder, do you mean the matches in the qualifiers 2008?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,742 ✭✭✭blackbelt

Unfortunately the football draw looks to be very one sided.

Donegal will maul Carlow especially in Ballybofey.Waterford shouldn't get anything against Meath in Navan.

Otherwise the other games should be closer but Wexford will beat Offaly,Armagh will win a hard fought game against Monaghan in Clones,Louth will beat Tipp and Leitrim will get a win against Longford in Carrick On Shannon.

I think the Wicklow v Fermanagh is one that Wicklow could win.It will be played in Aughrim and I think Wicklow should be able to get past them.Hannon,Glynn and co wil need to have a good day and convert their chances. They had Westmeath in the palm of their hand and threw it away.
