Help Me Get Healthy

I'm 23 and I suffer badly from hypertension (high blood pressure).
My diet isn't bad but it could be a bit better.

I go for at least 2 walks a day (about 15 mins each) on my way to and from work. (i work in an office so don't think that helps)
I also drink about 2 or 3 litres of water daily in work.
When the weekend swings around, my diet goes out the window. Few beers, breakfast roles & pizzas/currys/chipper.

My weight is very tempermental. I'd lost about 2 stone a couple of months ago but there was no change in me blood pressure. The doctors just piss an moan no matter how much effort I put in. Basically I was told by my cardiologist I'd have approximately 5 years left. Which is scary needless to say. Was wondering does anybody have any weight loss tips to bring it down a bit more. hopefully it'll have a positive effect on me hypertension.

    Sorry for dragging this out.............

what is your weight and height, daily diet?

    Height - 6'3"
Weight - 17.5 to 18 stone. (me height hides i well)

    BREAKFAST 8:30ish
Weetabix (2 or 3) with low fat milk
    yoghurt
    apple or banana

    LUNCH 13:00 ish
Ham/Chicken/Turkey/Tuna Sandwich (brown bread, no butter. might out a very small bit of sauce on it)
carton of fruice apple or orange juice
Another apple or banana (depends on the juice lol)

    DINNER 18:00 - 19:00
Really depends on what gets made by me parents

Might snack on some biscuits/Velvet Crunch crisps and a glass of milk watching T.V.

You are 23 and have a cardiologist already?, you should not be seeking advice on a internet forum imho.

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

IMO you would need to loose AT LEAST another two stone - surely your doc(s) have given some indication of the weight they think would be healthy for you? I wouldnt bother too much with weights just yet TBH - just get the diet in check and do lots of med intensity cardio - 15 min walks probably wont cut it ... If you have heart problems it makes sense not to be carrying around any / too much excess weight ..

If I was only 23 and told I wouldnt live to see 30 I would forget the chips, beer and junk at the weekends!!

The 15 min walks dont really count as exercise as that should be part of your everyday movement.

Get the diet in check like the others said. Whole un processed foods. Plenty of veg.

Go for longer walks or anything that gets your heart rate up for a prolonged period of time.

Im your age and if i was told i had 5 years left id never touch an ounce of beer or a chip. God man this is serious!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Respectfully, i don't think its a case of doctors pissing and moaning no matter how much effort you put in. I think its that you don't put in (enough) effort.

As others have said, you were told you have 5 years to live, and your still eating breakfast rolls, pizzas, chipper etc? C'mon, you need to get your diet in check. This is serious.

As far your diet, it doesn't sound exactly perfect. Read through the stickies on nutrition, but aim for 4-6 small meals a day, low carb, lots of lean protein etc, but i would talk to a doctor/dietician for more specifics because you clearly have a serious health condition, and you don't want to play around with internet advice.

And as far as eating whatever your parents give you for dinner, that no excuse. Either cook for yourself or else explain to them the seriousness of your situation and ask them to help you with a change of diet. I would imagine they would do whatever it takes.

I suppose you're all right.. Just the doctors are c****.I mean I lost 2 stone in about 2 months (which i think is alright) I mean they're the ones that weighed me both times. And all I got off her was and i quote: "You're blood pressure is still up. You haven't done a thing about this have you?"

I thought to myself "f**k you" Me diet was great and excercised at least 4 or 5 days a week. Kind of kick in the teeth that set me bck an put me back at square 1 then because I felt all this work and nothing so f**k it

Dude, go see a nutritionist - talk to your doctor about healthy forms of exercise.

The fact you have been given this news and your are still having
Few beers, breakfast roles & pizzas/currys/chipper.
Is terrifying - they are ok as a treat but to have them regularly is crazy. Grow up

I can understand how it got you annoyed, but youve got to remember, this is about you, not about a doctors opinion. You didnt lose the weight for that blunt speaking doctor, you did it for your own health. And thats why you cant just say f**k it.

As has been said, make sure your diet is clean. Watch your snacking. Its very easy to eat quite a lot of sh!te without really registering it. Write down every morsel that passes your lips for a week, so youre not forgetting any of the smaller stuff. And good luck from here on in. 2 stone is a good start and shows you can do it, handy.

    + 1

if you feel that your doctors are genuinely unhelpful or being unreasonable, change doctors. But don't give up to spite them. Believe me, if you keel over with a heart attack, or worse, it won't be the doctor's it will affect. It will be you and your family.
