3 Mobile Broadband + DHCP not enabled

    Hi,
I am trying to set up an ad hoc network using vista to share my 3 mobile broadband connection with a PDA. I have shared the 3 connection using ICS and set up the ad hoc network. I am getting a private IP on the PDA 160.254.x.x and see that DHCP is disabled on the 3 USB mobile device (Huawei E180). I test with a regular ethernet connection to my PC and shared that and everything was fine. Does anyone have any idea on how to enable DHCP on the E180? I rang three but they said the connection cannot be shared which seems strange to say the least.

    Thanks,
    Pat

You expect anyone at 3 to know anything about ICS - you must be joking.

Not tried it with a 3 modem but its no big deal but I think you are a bit mixed up. Firstly enabling DHCP on the E180 has nothing to do with it.

It works this way you're Vista PC connects to the internet via the 3; then ICS acts as a NAT router to its clients and its your Vista ICS PC which dishes out he IP addresses.

The Vista PC should get a static IP address of 192.168.0.1 when you set up ICS (its automatic don't fill in the IP yourself) and it will hand out DHCP IP addresses to its clients of the form 192.168.0.x.

I won't waste toooo many words as this explains it quite well sorry its for XP but the principle is the same.

I've shared my 3 connection with no problems with a pc in another room which has a wireless adapter - I just have to make sure that the 3 internet connection is shared over wireless rather than local area connection and it works fine. Its the same setup you're looking for, an ad hoc network from a vista laptop. My 3 connection properties shows it is set to receive an IP address automatically - I only looked at that there now as I haven't touched that part of it at all since getting it.

I have found 3 broad band a very inadiquite service. The signal depends on where you are in the house, the weather, how many people using it. When asked about service there is alway a promise that its going to be upgraded soon. It is not up to much. I am moving away from 3. I am hoping to meet people that are having problems breaking there contract with them. They are not very honourable and make it very hard. I have nothing good to say about them.

Thanks for the replys and sorry for taking so long to get back. I am still having issues with this. I set up the ad hoc network but it is still assigning a private IP to my PDA. MY vista PC does not seem to get a static IP. Can it be set manually for ICS? Is there any services associated with ICS?

    Thanks

Once ICS is running on your laptop it becomes a DHCP sever, Default Gateway and DNS server for the network, but that doesn't stop you assiging those addresses to the PDA yourself.

TBH I must test this out but I don't have the time atm but will do as there are two similar questions on boards.ie atm and neither of you have it working. I know one of the links I posted said about using an ad hoc network but I think thats crap and a totally ass about face way of doing it.

Bollox..... should be doing something else really important but this is bugging me so will try it now. Back soon...........

Edit> So far I'm wrong, has to be add hoc

OK have it working with a fixed IP etc set on an iPAQ 1940r but does seem to be one of those "black art" connections where you can't be sure what finally got it going. I think its a problem with the iPAQ as it also works occasionally with DHCP enabled and picks up an IP address then drops it again. Tried also sharing a wired ethernet adaptor connected to the internet (shared via the wireless adaptor) and that performed in exactly the same way - unreliable - so guess the problem is with connecting to add hoc networks from the iPAQ as Access Point connections work fine. Checked iPAQ again and even without ICS up and running its not happy connecting to an ad hoc network again it connects for a few seconds looks ok then disconnects and tries again but could also be some incomptability between the iPAQ HP adaptor and the Dell laptops Intel adaptor? But I did manage to get an IP address if only briefly. Will try again next time I have my hands on another device that can connect to ad hoc networks.
