Mines e39 530 sport with auto and steptronic/sports box, drive it in normal auto all the time though. 25mpg is probably ok considering what it is

    I get 37.8 mpg average over 5000km on a 1.5 Almera.

Have gotten 54 mpg driving to Westport and back from Dun Laoghaire with a full car.

is that all you get in a 320i? I get 25 consistently in a 530i, mixed conditions but I'm hardly ever on a motorway

That's what I'm getting in my 525 auto, with a decent chunk of my driving in light-medium traffic. I was getting a steady 40MPg or so from my 320d, but the 5 series has cost a lot less in maintenance. I try not to think about it too much.

My absolute record was 108 MPG :D 2.6 l/100km with a VW Lupo 1.2 Pdtdi
(was no RHD version of this) 90-95 km average speed 22 C with windows up and 2 persons and no luggage

    What do others think?

It depends on your driving style, the car you drive and the driving conditions.
My old Mercedes-Benz 190D 2.0 does on average about 50mpg. Between the last tank fillings she did over 51 mpg / 5.51 l/100km (mixed driving, but mostly on longer runs). I think it is very good for the early '80s technology and if you take into account its superb reliability (currently 190k miles), lack of depreciation, very low maintenance cost, etc. it makes it just about the cheapest car to run considering the size, weight and comfort.

    Regards.

A relative has a Megane 1.5 DCi having previously had a Focus 1.4 petrol.

    Focus - 41 mpg average :)
    Megane - 63 mpg average :D

I notice a lot of talk in this thread about motorway driving, IME m-way driving has a negative effect on economy for cars with relatively small engines i.e. most cars on Irish roads. On motorways I would often drive at an indicated 130 km/h (~120 km/h true speed) and economy is about 25% worse than it is at an indicated 110 km/h.

Anyhow my overall economy is 43 mpg. 1.6 petrol Laguna with 205k miles.

I get around 6.0l/100km in a C5 1.6 110bhp (more than 1100km to a €65 tank). That's what I got in an 09 reg 08 spec C5. I've just taken delivery of the 09 spec version so it will be interesting to see how it compares to the 08 spec. It'll take a few thousand kms till the donkey loosens out a bit.

I agree, I often see 60mpg+(indicated) on N roads but that would fall to 50-55mpg(indicated) for motorway driving.

He must be pushing it around town..!!
I have that exact car. ( 1.4 TDI Sport )
did a run recently and was delighted to get an average of 50.66 ( Cork to Wexford for a week break)
    Filled it before leaving
Filled it again at home 29.15 liters for 515 kilometers.

That must be something to do with your driving style or driving conditions (heavy traffic, cold weather, driving on short distances, etc.). I get that kind of fuel economy in my 1993 2-litre Mercedes 190D (early '80 technology, over 300kkm on the clock, without turbo, without direct injection and all bells and whistles in the engine) and if driving gently, even a bit better than that.

Diesel 2.0 litre D4D Corolla van,
58.6 miles per gallon, mixed motorway, dub city centre driving
not really granny driving, just not using turbo in 1st 2nd 3rd or 4th gear, still 130 - 135 on motorway, and at the speed limit everywhere else...

    Well,
I dont drive with slippers to to speak :D

    But
On that run I did take it a lot easier than normal. Now. Upon saying that, I had 3 adults and my 17 yr old son so I suppose you could say 4 adults.. The boot was stuffed to the hilt with Luggage,so much so that on 2 occasions i had to turn on Traction Control on steep uphill climbs as the wheels were only spinning all over the shop :D

22MPG on average with an E38, I put €97 in it exactly 3 weeks ago to the day so it doesn't bother me at all.
If I was a commuter, I reckon i'd be quite bothered...

I think once a car is doing something better than 30mpg it is grand.

I always empty my car to the fuel light and fill it to the brim. Since they raised the speed limits on commute I have dropped at least 5mpg! Doing 140km/h kills fuel economy. But I don't care!

Currently have an IS200 02, getting 29/30MPG, used to have a 2.0 TDDI mondeo getting around the 46MPG, and a Skoka octavia 1.6L getting 36/37MPG.

Bought s/h 99 corolla 1.3 petrol 3 yrs ago and checked mpg averaged over 4 months (summer). Mileage was C80% R road 16 mile commutes, C10% N road long trips & C10% local short trips. Average mpg was 48!

I was astonished by the results. My previous cars included petrol granada, omega and laguna. All returned C35-38mpg with similar driving pattern which I was very happy with.

I'm not a hard driver but always tend to cruise at the highest possible safe/legal speed.

Converting litre/gallon & km/mile is a pain but I still find mpg figures more meaningful.

I'm getting about 26 -28 MPG in 2.0t saab 95. In fairness it is nearly all around town driving at rush hours but still, my driving style would be described as pedestrian :)

I've heard things like running the air con can account for about 5-10% of your fuel useage, any truth to that? I may just roll down the windows!

He gets 800km out of a tankful which as far as I know is about 40 litres. I suppose older people do tend to drive a bit easier alright.

    45 Litre tank ;)
I would estimate it at 50 + MPG

    Exactly what I get

On my 1990 BMW 735 auto I average between 25-28mpg, though that can sometimes rise, given the multitude of varying driving conditions etc. On a motorway cruise, I usually get up to the appropriate speed, gently, though not crawling, then almost let the car drive itself. Two tons of metal can build up a nice bit of momentum! But given the fluctuating price of petrol, it's something of a moot point, as filling my tank can vary by quite a bit, from earlier this year when it was 89c a litre to the present 1.15c.

The big killer is when I flick the "S" mode on the box and then watch the MPG indicator needle drop right off the scale. Great for overtaking though! My main criteria is Smiles Per Gallon, which is something you cant put a price on!!

I get around 34mpg in my 1.8gdi s40 and i think that is very very impressive considering the way i drive. I always have the aircon on, i accelerate fairly hard and the Dublin-Mitchelstown commute takes me about an hour and a half late at night (when there is no traffic before anyone slaughters me) so i'll leave ye guess the weighting of my right foot.

If i drove like my parents i reckon i would have it over 40mpg nearly all the time which is fairly good for an 8 year old petrol engined car.

    1999 bmw 318is...

i get between 35-40mph i suppose. had two 1.3 mirages previously which ATE petrol by comparison! i was delighted when i got back from shannon to carlow on 20 euro, which was what i had put in the punto sporting for the drive down.. if i drive the bmw hard it drops to between 30 and 35 i suppose
