Was hoping there was a boards spin soon so I could tag along.

I'm hoping to join one, if it's newbie friendly. The weather's looking really good for the weekend.

Holy God no wonder you've ran out of conversation after running 70k.

Now I'm wondering how far you'd be able to cycle?

I'm taking a half day tomorrow so I'm having my silly Friday now.

9am Dundrum anyone? Separate beginner and experienced spins if we have the numbers?

+1 for beginners, up to 100k'ish fine for me.

    Great stuff!
Where abouts in Dundrum do you usually meet? I know its not a sprawling megatropolis but I do have an uncanny abillity to be in the wrong place at the right time.

He gets in quick there. That's it, I'm not going out.

    West Cork 200 this weekend

What day and where? Its about time I started coming along to these boards spins.

I'm up for getting in on this, but 9am on a Saturday - bit early no? :D

As for the beginner spin, I'd be an absolute beginner - what would I need to bring?

I'm only a commuting cyclist at the moment, do about 16kms each weekday. Would 100 be a bit much?

We have one constinuency of people who want to go at 8 or earlier and another who'd like to go after 10. 9 is the best compromise. If you can make it in for work at 9 every morning, you should be able to make it out for a spin.

That's fair enough, was being a bit tongue-in-cheek though.

So for a commuting cyclist, going for 16km a day - what would a 100km be like?

    About six times as hard.

Wow - Lumen is short for illuminating then is it?

Get the vibe that beginners aren't exactly welcomed.

100km might be a bit of a stretch. Suggest 60 for a beginners spin this week?

Tentatively it will be something like this, which will mean getting lost on the back roads out of Swords. I'm not 100% sure if I'll go out Sat or Sun. Will start another thread tomorrow when I decide. Feel free to hijack my route and start your own spin if you don't want to wait while I dilly dally.:D

Sorry, wasn't trying to be unwelcoming at all :)

If it helps, maybe add 50% to the distance for the hills, and subtract a bit for the company, which is honestly much less sarcastic than my last post.

16km a day is not very far, but that doesn't say anything about your fitness. I walk less than 3km a day, but I'm sure I could go further if I had a reason to.

I think he was joking. Most of us are/were beginners. There was plenty of beginner reassurance in related threads this week.

This is getting way too complicated -

We are not n00bs unfriendly, but, if u cycle 16km commute - what sort of bike you do it on?

No worries, must have just picked you up wrong.

What time roughly would the 100km take, that might give me a better idea of what the fitness levels would need to be?

A hybrid - flat bar with road tyres. Dawes Giro.

Joker: what is your max distance in a single cycle to date?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,400 ✭✭✭Caroline_ie

I though the dawes giro were 'racers'.

Anyway - this is way too complicated - I'll head out on the flat and keep my legs for the bloom mountains sunday ....

Joker: As a new convert to more-than-comuting cycling I can say that the first time you encounter hills or distances longer than a few hours it may knock the hell out of you! But in a very enjoyable way that will keep you coming gasping for more. At a guess 100k will prob take you 4 - 5 hours

Here's a 60km route with relatively gentle climbing if people are interested in that for a beginner's spin.

Haven't measured it, but I'd say it's around, don't all laugh too loud now, 20kms.

In that case I would advise that you go for a spin much shorter than 100km and certainly no longer than 60km. It's best not to risk injury doing something that you are not used to. Built the distance up bit by bit every week. It won't take long :)

They are usually, but they made a hybrid a few years ago - here

I recommend servicing the bike before going on any kind of non* commute spins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,111 ✭✭✭joker77

Cheers - I keep it regularly serviced.

I'm missing a spoke from the back wheel, apart from that it's fine

And you don't think that's should be replaced? I'd go and get that wheel fixed if I were you... serioulsly, you're going feck up your wheel ... and hurt yourself.

    Yea I know, I know
I usually get them fixed straight away... have been a bit busy of late. I think the wheel needs to be rebuilt, or replaced

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 722 ✭✭✭flatface

Will there be a few to do a 100K+ as well? I need a few longer distance ones in my last few weeks before I flatface-off the ROK.

You would need to have your bike in perfect working order to go on a group spin. The first reason is for safety. A bunch crash is not fun. The second reason is so that you minimise the chance of having problems on the road.

I'm on for at least 100km if I'm free on Saturday.

A broken spoke isn't necessarily a show stopper, can't imagine it would be much of a problem (say) on a 36h 3x front wheel.

Perhaps if you get one while out on the road, it may not be so bad. Starting a ride with one is another thing!

Grand so I'll see you there, and then probably the back of you getting smaller and smaller... over the next 20K :)

    I'm in for saturday.

Even if it is a heavily laced wheel, I wouldn't have thought that the stock wheels on a Dawes would win any prizes for wheelbuilding. Best to get it sorted rather than end up with a more expensive repair down the line.

Like Raam says also, it's not endearing you to a group of riders if you go out on a bike that could potentially cause a mass spill.

Build up at a rate you feel happy with, don't push yourself to injury but do increase your distances on a weekly basis. Try different routes with more climbs so you don't get bored of the same old thing. I'd say that in a couple of months you would be able to get around a boards spin with a smile still on your face, which is the most important part.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,352 ✭✭✭rottenhat

It should be said also that there's nothing stopping anyone going part way with the group and then turning back before they fatally injure themselves run out of juice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,111 ✭✭✭joker77

The bike is in good working order, the wheel has been running fine without the single spoke that's missing.

But I understand that in the interest of everyone's safety it's best to wait until it's fixed.

I rang Cycleways (the nearest repair shop to me), the earliest they can fit me into the workshop is the 30th, so it looks like I'm out of the beginners spin on Saturday.

I'm going to go out anyway, on my own for a shorter spin, to build up the distance a bit. Will aim for 40km.

I could be on for this, though I would turn off at Blessington and head for home aka Newbridge.

Need to figure out if I can get to Dundrum before 9 though

(in my defence I'm rarely in work before 12)

Try Dundrum, Stepaside, Johny Foxes, Stocking Lane, back to Dundrum should be about 40km and has some lovely views, a real pleasure on a sunny day.

I'm finally putting my bike where my mouth is and heading out this Saturday. As I am very unfit and there is a Lions match at 2 (where's that wimp list) I will probably be heading back a bit early so would be glad to bring home any beginners that don't feel up for a 100km+ epic
