I'm nearly 10 stone (size 12) and 5.4 I used to be a size 10 and in or around 9stone less than a year ago. People I haven't seen in a while remark on my weight gain and I really want to lose it the stone I've put on. I've tried cutting down and exercise but its not shifting. I have done some research on Ali and even though the side effects sound a bit disgusting I think it sounds like something that will actually make me think twice before eating fatty foods
Has anyone around my weight tried ali or even other ali users any opinions?

I reckon if you post up a typical day's diet we can give you some pointers......

Talk of diet pills is banned. Well it is on D&N so i assume (and hope) it applies to fitness too.

BMI must be at least 28.

guaranteed that the weight is not shifting because your diet is not up to scratch, even if you think it is. Same applies to the exercise and remember that it is not always possible to out train a bad diet.

Post up your daily typical diet, warts and all.

Do not even consider it! Going from 10st to 9st should be relatively straight forward and is nowhere near enough of an endeavor to even consider such drastic measures! There's obviously one or two things you're doing wrong, which you may or may not be aware of.

Please post up an honest list of your current nutrition (including times of the day) and your weekly exercise. From this, we will be able to tell you the aspects of your nutrition/exercise that are good and the ones that are not so good.

Hmm, there's nothing outrageous in there, seems like the diet of an average person working in town to be honest! My advice on the brekkie would be a bowl of porridge (takes 2.5mins in the microwave) or if you really can't do that, weetabit or museli would be a good second option.

Other than that, I would say just avoid the bad day foods you mention above. If you can do that Mon-Fri, the weekend stuff probably wouldn't be a problem.

On another note, what time do you generally have dinner at? Do you generally exercise after dinner time? The reason I ask is because it would be a good idea to avoid taking in carbs late at night that never get used as energy.

Can i just add, unless you looked unhealthily thin before and they mean it in a nice way, your friends are bitches - who tells somebody they are getting fat! if they haven't seen you in a while, they are clearly not good enough friends to be saying it in the nice caring way.

That said, you don't actually sound very fat at all. A few small tweaks and you will be fine. Don't go the pill route - its a cop out IMO, and more importantly as with smoking etc, unless you have the will power to clean up your act on your own, pills won't help you do it either - they might help in the short while, but you will soon go back yo your old way, or once you reach your goal and go off them, you will go right back to where you started from.

Make some smart healthy changes now, and you can get the body you want for life. Read through the stickies on nutrition, they really are a great starting point, and have all you need to know.

I would much rather be told the truth about my weight than being bitched about behind my back....wouldn't you? It can also be a wake up call to lose some if you're overweight.

thanks for the replies I think i just needed talking out of it and flogg is right if I just concentrated on being good during the week maybe I would have more luck.
Dinner is usually around 7 and excerise is after work or a class at lunch
I'll read up more on the other threads and try to get a bit more will power!!
BTW it was older relation, my mothers friend and an annoying cousin (who used to be overweight and has went crazy dieting) that commented on my weight and my sister but we are honest with each other bout weight :( I have nice friends who wouldn't dream of saying such things!

Well i have three words for you ... it's the diet! To me, and feel free to disagree but the walks to work you are doing should be part of day to day activity and not count as exercise unless it is a really really long walk and you are seriously getting your heart rate up there. Maybe for 1 or 2 days you could incorporate wogging - as in walking with jogging intervals and progress the intensity over time as you develop. generally if it soesnt make you sweat or get your heart rate up its not much for losing weight.

    Now to the diet
1.pleaee dont miss breakfast.get up 5min earlier if you have to or take 2min the evening beforehand to prepare it. it gets the metabolism going for the day and will help with weight loss. not even going to comment on the sausage rolls. the amount of unhealthy fat and calories in them is horrendous. how bout porridge for brekkie or eggs in omlette form or scrambeled. or fruit and greek yogurt.

    2. try and stay away from sauces like the tikka if from deli same with the deli lunches. how bout you prepare lunch - chicken breast, tuna, tomato, peppers, eggs, cottage cheese etc.

nuts are a great snack - unsalted and not roasted if possible

Basically keep th fresh whole unprocessed foods and measure your portions if you have to. you can still have your treats just dont go mad on them. every thing in moderation and moderation in moderation too! have your takeaway the weekends if it keeps you sane

no need for the alli - changing your diet and upping the exercise and you will get the desired results.

Given your height and weight you're not overweight (your bmi is only ~24), so you wouldnt be suitable for taking alli.

Make sure you're not eating a large amount of carbs as part of your dinner at 7. Any carbs that are not used by the body for energy get converted to bodyfat. Carbs if eaten an hour or more prior to activity is very good for energy though.

    Why do either?

And the OP doesn't sound like she is all that overweight.

And casual acquaintances don't know you well enough to give you a concerned, cruel to be kind wake -up call!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,824 ✭✭✭floggg

OP, not trying to be critical. but just to add that it is not a question of "having better luck" - this is entirely in your control! I think its important to recognise that its your decision what you eat at the end of the day, and if you put a bit of thought in advance to that decision, it becomes easy to make the right ones.

Also, it is easy to do once you get your mind right for it. Its not about dieting to get to a certain goal, its about deciding to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Also, remember, you don't have to cut out treats altogether, - you can give yourself a cheat day if you like where you can relax a bit on what you eat. it can be motivation for the rest of the week.

That particular paragraph above should be made a sticky for weight loss. Too many people go on a diet, which is fundamentally a short term endeavor to lose weight. With a large proportion of people, some progress is made and then they end up back at square one.

Instead of that, by choosing to incorporate good eating habits and exercise into your lifestyle, you are setting out a long term trend. It's a completely different way of looking at it but with any body shape/size/weight goal, the vast majority of the battle is pyschological.

No, they're not banned here. I'm not a believer in just blanket banning topics that make some people uncomfortable. The good common sense, great knowledge and effective persuasiveness of the Fitness forum folk ensure that the vast majority of people looking for advice on pills end up going away with a change of heart and the determination to eat better.
