So, the big question is - do I upgrade my 1st Gen iPhone to 3.0 and unlock it?

    Watch this space.....

The great thing is the 1st gen iPhone will ALWAYS be able to be unlocked because of it's hardware.

True, but I found the phone somewhat sluggish when I went from 1.3 to 2.1, so I am wondering if it is worth going to 3.0. The responsiveness of the phone post-upgrade is what I am wondering about.

Was sort of expecting that. Now will this work if you are on a 5.9 bootloaderr?

I've found 3.0 to be fairly on par with 2.2.1 speed-wise.

Is that on a 1st Gen iPhone?

    I haven't even gone to 2.2.1 yet, still on 2.1. :o

Notice the baseband (modem) firmware version in that shot. That should mean that the 5.09 bootloader thing isn't an issue, as 5.08 was only required to downgrade the baseband firmware. In this case you'll be upgrading it to 04.26.08 and unlocking via that :)

Yup. 2.2.1 was the most stable firmware since 1.1.4 IMO. 3.0 is close, I've had a few issues, but overall it's a great update. As a 2G user, you can always downgrade it to 2.2.1 again if you don't like 3.0 (DFU in iTunes and Restore).

are people in the know expecting a sofware unlock for the iphone 3gs very soon after its release?

It won't be anytime soon I bet. The 3g took 6 months to unlock. You can be sure apple have made the 3gs very difficult to exploit.

if they were smart, they would make it easier to unlock..that way they would sell more handsets as people from other networks that are not willing to move to 02 would buy it and unlock it..

I have been running 3.0 (final version) on my ipod touch 2g and I feel that it may be faster than 2.2.1 In the web browsing at least. I like the landscape versions of everything as well as copy and paste. Pity apple still haven't got their arses into gear to bring us movie and tv show downloads... um, we can download audiobooks now :(

Like the bluetooth too... hopefully this means with the unlock that we can use ibluetooth (a cydia app that lets you send and recieve files).

For info on how to get the non-jailbroken 3.0 go to

if you just can't wait until tomorrow:p

I can't. Thought I had it found already but it was the 3GS firmware.

Edit: The download is sooooooooo slooooooooooooow. A whopping 30kb/s for a 200meg file. *sighs*

Did a factory restore so haven't uploaded any songs yet. It's recommended to do one with major upgrades.

A2DP! Wooo! I can finally dig out my S9!!

Is there any point to upgrading to 3.0 with a 1st gen iPhone?

    Depends on what you want.

Are you happy with the functionality of the phone as it is?

Though I am not an owner of an iphone, I have tested this firmware on my ipod touch and my answer to you would be a definative yes. This firmware, firstly, is needed to run new apps with the features that iPhone OS 3.0 brings. These features include: push notifications (the ability to push info to your iphone through a server) this would be especially usful in an IM app such as IM+. Also it brings multiplayer bluetooth into the mix (though I believe iPhone 1st gen does not support this. I'm unsure). Finally, Apps now have access to your iTunes library so you can turn on the radio in a racing app and it will play some of your tunes!! OS 3.0 also speeds up web browsing a bit. more noticably for the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2g though. How about Copy and paste for good measure? :pac: Also landscape mode for notes mail and stocks.

Finally 3.0 is a free update to all iPhone users (though it is $9.95 for iPod Touch unless you jailbreak it of coarse). get it.

There's your problem. All of the 2.* firmware builds before 2.2.1 were horrible. 2.2.1, however, has been rock solid for me. I don't have to regularly restart the phone to make up for memory management issues and Safari has only crashed once since I've upgraded!

Does anyone have a time whens its gona be realeased? Is 3.0 out at 12:00 tonight?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

I would assume about 6pm our time. It would make sense to roll it out on a 9am worldwide basis, just to ease server congestion alone!

I want MMS but, I can't get it.

I wonder will hackers modify the firmware or something..

You won't get MMS on a 1st Gen with version 3.0, I'm afraid. It's only the 3G models that will get it.

Swirly MMS is one of the few options available.

Why is the Dev Team going to call it Ultrasn0w rather than Yellowsn0w? Obviously the definition of Ultra could be "exceeding or going beyond all other of the same kind".

Maybe it's just to separate the 2.2.0 FW from the 3.0..

I know, I'm just bored waiting for the update like everyone else :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,047 ✭✭✭nedd

Ultrasn0w will be able to unlock all versions of the FW.

They will be releasing new versions of the jailbreak tools for 3.0 shortly after Apple releases 3.0.

I may seem a bit overzealous but I suggest for everyone who is waiting for the release of Ultrasn0w to DOWNLOAD 3.0 ASAP. You don't have to install it but make sure you've downloaded yourself a copy. It's certain that Apple is catching on to Ultrasn0w and we never know how soon they'll release a small update. It's not likely that they'll release a dot (3.01/3.1) so soon, but it is a very small possibility. A possibility for me as a 3G user to take much caution of and make sure I don't lose my unlock, before I even get it. Being that Ultrasn0w will most likely be open-source, it makes it really easy for Apple to know what exactly to look for in their Baseband and fix it as soon as possible. Again, it's not very likely AT ALL, but I for one will not take any chances when it comes to this matter. The majority of people on this blog and everywhere else have waited for this for nearly 4 months now...most probably a little longer. And I can easily see Apple filling up the hole in their Baseband as early as Monday. For the 15th time, it is NOT likely, but do you really want to take that chance?

What do you make of that. Just a comment left on the blog.

This is why I waited until the iPhone was officially released here. To spend that much money on something that you need to hack to get working for you, is madness to me. If it can't do what you want it to, then why pay for it?

I see your point, but hacking the iphone gets it to do more for you, and cheaper, than going through normal channels.

    Plus it is shiny.

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me....the dev team are going to release their jailbreak version of 3.0 later on today, so as long as you don't accept any Itunes update then Ultrasn0w will always work with this version.....just be careful about updating after you have it installed.

Ye suppose your right just while reading through some of the comments was wondering how much apple really care about this unlock? They still get there money. Some people were suggesting apple were gona hunt down oranic or whatever his name is the person who found the hack and make an offer for him to tell them what it is. Would apple really bother like they are really losing money having these phones locked.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 395 ✭✭AntoSRFC

Sorry if im wrecking peoples heads but just want confirmation.i have a jailbroken iphone 3G. When 3.0 is available through iTunes do i hit restore then update. Is that the best way to save space? Then wait for iphone dev team to realese the jailbreak?

    Thanks

Do Apple not get a percentage of the monthly tariff?

I think that may be one of the reasons they are so eager to keep them network locked

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,096 ✭✭✭anoble66

correct, Apple get 10% of the monthly tariff from the operators.

ANTOSRFC - Personally, I would not upgrade through Itunes. Just wait for the Jailbroken 3.0 file to become available and restore to that version.

Still no sign of the update??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 690 ✭✭✭Frankmagnet

Hope someone can answer this for me and its not too much of a noob question. I havent had to jailbreak an iphone since the 1st version and I am getting the 16gb 3gs on PAYG on
    o2 next friday.

Is there any way I can jailbreak and unlock it so I can use it on my meteor simcard or is it too early for that yet?

Thanks to anyone who can answer.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 395 ✭✭AntoSRFC

Yeah it should be available friday

Great so I just activate with my new o2 sim and then install whatever is released on friday. Then I can use my meteor sim?

Sorry if im being a pain in the arse.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 395 ✭✭AntoSRFC

No unfortunitly is a bit harder than that.
Heres my take on it but if i was you id look for confirmation.

First of all you need to update to 3.0 which is available now.

Then you need to jailbreak it. Not yet realesed but should be up on the iphone dev team blog soon. This allows you to install non apple apps on your iphone.

Then on friday the dev team will realese ultrasnow. available on cydia which is on your phone when you jailbreak it. this unlocks the iphone and allows you to use any sim card on your device.

Now can anyone correct me if im wrong cus im gona do this myself.

    Thanks
