One day in the gym- what should I do?

So I got a free pass to my local gym to see if I like it, any ideas what sort of things I should be looking out for when I use it? Should I just do a normal workout or what?

BTW- By joining the gym I want to increase stamina, strength and (a little bit of) muscle mass.

I'm not interested in the threadmills/cycling machines etc as I run and cycle every week anyway.

Any tips would be much appreciated!!

you want to increase stamina and strength but only a little bit of muscle?

when you have trained before what would you do in the gym or what would you think you will do when you go to try it out?

Check out the equipment, full range of everything (dumbbells, barbells etc), showers are CLEAN and staff are not only helpful but know their stuff.

    Where is gym?

What I meant by 'a little bit' was that I don't have over ambitious notions. I just didn't want to give the impression that I was joining just to 'bulk up' if you know what I mean.

And Westpoint in Blanchardstown. It's a 30 second walk from work so it's pretty handy.

focus on compound exercises like deadlifts, squats, bench press, chins, dips, military press etc

Exactly- do these hard once a week correctly and ur flyin, add some accesory exercises like abs and curls if you like as well as shoulder work but all that can be done at home!

Well I plan to go more than once a week, as soon as I join. But for the moment I have a day pass to see if I like the gym, although I doubt I'll have a problem with it :D

    Thanks for the info guys!

I was only there once, at an off peak time, but I really liked the gym. Loads of benches, good range of DB's, plenty of barbells and a couple of squat racks.

On equipment alone I recommend the place. I believe its quite busy at peak times, although judging by the programs most people seem to be doing you'll have no problem getting to a squat rack. I would go at a peak time though so you don't get a surprise later.

That's true. I think I'll go at peak time to see it at its busiest time but if I join I'll probably go off peak until I am comfortable with the equipment etc...

    Cheers!
