So when are the rumour cogs going to start up.

‘I heard from this lad, who know a guy that used to date one girls that worked there a few years back and he said that the fire was started by little green men in revenge for the Graduates Sky satellite interfering with their super computers ability to claim world domination’

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,558 ✭✭✭Same As

it's been moved to the kilkenny forum though which isn't much use.

That's some quality modding right there! :pac::D

I wonder if they'll bother rebuilding it now, Its been a while since I've been there but I dont think it's been that busy and if its proved its the fault of another business the owner may get a hefty insurance cheque and call it a day.

Supposedly a Chinese restaurant opened upstairs recently, not quite sure how business was going for them?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 21,693 Mod ✭✭✭✭helimachoptor

When the new owners bought it, I heard they paid 9 million for it.

Was there, nothing left of it now, Killiney shopping CTR could now do with a lick of paint. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,499 ✭✭✭IamMetaldave

Nothing at all left? Madness! It'll be down to the Horse n Hound so!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 598 ✭✭✭Apip99

    Great Photos.

I'd say the traffic up that way will be at a standstill.

Shame to see it go I have to say. My wife's parents live round the corner, and we'd pop in there from time to time..

    Nothing? Wow, that was fast.
I'll miss the place. Wonder if they'll rebuild.

Here ya go. Was up there a little while ago. It's getting destroyed!

The third one is a woman returning to her car to find the firemen had smashed her window to move it back from the building to allow the fire engine in. Oh dear

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 51 ✭✭Shelly23

LOL the poor womans car. bit idiotic though to park beside a fire no??
Have to drive by it on the way home in a few minutes, i'd say traffic will be mental!

It's a shame to see the gradge gutted, liked the place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 381 ✭✭Dr. Dodger

lol it wasn't on fire when she first parked the car there!

Yeah it's a pity about the Graduate but I'm sure they'll rebuild it. The new chinese will probably have taken a lot of smoke in through the open window beside it. Apparently the window opens automatically so theres nothing they can do to keep the smoke out of the kitchen. The Rochestown road onto the round about is closed, or was earlier. The new road is the main way to go but the traffic is very heavy so avoid it if you can.

The shopping centre was already pumping money into it to modernise it- wonder if its a conspiracy? burn down the place and make a nicer one off the insurance?! haha
not sure i can avoid the sallynoggin by-pass, will have to endure the traffic jams i think. it might give me a chance to grab a pic or two along the way :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 598 ✭✭✭Apip99

Cheers Dr Dodger for the photos.

We have to slide round to in laws on the way home, but as mentioned I'd say traffic will be a bit on the mental side!

I'd hardly call that place a shopping centre! Though it looked nicer when they redesigned it.

I always knew they made a mistake by getting rid of the college upstairs!

just seen it. It is gutted. top floor nearly gone and it collapsed down. The fire started in the new restaurant. I was in the grad last week and upstairs has just finished a revamp. it LOOKED well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,478 ✭✭✭lee_baby_simms

Seems like a very odd time for the place to go up in flames.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 51 ✭✭Shelly23

It started between 9.30 and 10am i think. colleagues trickling into work at 9.30 didnt see anything and few mentioned it at around 10... wouldv'e thought the pub/ restaurant would be empty at those times bar minimal staff cleaning/ preparing etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,478 ✭✭✭lee_baby_simms

    Insurance scam.

    It had to be said.

Does anyone know what started it? there's a huge debate going on in my house cause we've all heard different things!

 I was waiting for it. never in the history of pubs has one just burned down by accident.

Although a friend of mine burned down his parents pub many years back when they were away. He was in-charge and got locked, and during a lock in, he decided to get some petrol to light the fire, and here is the result:

    Opps.

My Uncle informs me its totally destroyed. The adjoining shopping centre is also closed for fear electrical generator may also catch fire and burn the lot down. Hard luck to anyone having their party there this week. :(

This pic is available on the Irish times website.

I work in the center and the Gradge is gutted completely:( Heard it started as an electrical fault in the office and off it went. It was fully in flames inside a half hour from bout 9.30

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 595 ✭✭✭the_dark_side

thats some fire to have been started by an electrical fault! Did they not have a fire alarm? smoke alarm? even a sprinkler system, considering it cost 9 million, you would think that you would have it well protected... at least it didnt start in the evening time or at night when the pub would be busy, thank god

one of the girls in work said that seemingly the fire brigade were there in seconds but they couldn’t get the pressure for the water apparently it was on coming out of the hose in drips they had to wait 40mins until it worked properly

My mother is gonna have a heart attack when she gets back from her hols, she keeps that place in business!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 51 ✭✭Shelly23

just drove by it there. flames still visible in the roof, it's a sad sight. I spotted a few people driving by who had hands to their mouths in shock, i guess cos it's a bit of a local landmark.
Next question is: which pub takes the slack?? The madge or the Horse and Hound?
