    Hi all

Marble City Cyclers are a new cycling club based in Kilkenny and we're excited to be holding our first sportif on 1st August, which is the Saturday of the August Bank Holiday weekend. There will be a choice of three scenic cycling routes of 160km, 100km, and 40km and all are around the county of Kilkenny starting and finishing at the Kilkenny Rugby Club. There will be refreshments, changing facilities, showers, and parking provided.

For anyone not from Kilkenny, this could be a great Bank Holiday weekend away in the Marble City, where they can enjoy the famous hospitality in the sunny southeast. Money raised from this cycle will be for the good work done at Barretstown Children Camp.

Any details on the 160km route? Hilly? Flat? Rolling?

I met two of these guys on the Tour of Ireland, great guys, new club, I will certainly be going down myself. Watch out with these lads, the sprint for the finish starts 20k out!

AstraMonti - the 160km is a hilly one, challenging. But there is an escape clause in it, in that the 160km and 100km are likely to be together for the first 68km or so. If you find the going tough (and we hope that you do!!), you can go home on the 100km route.

We are currently looking at doing online entries with Active.com and we hope to have this set-up on the website by the end of the month.

Blorg - I'm not too sure who you are but you're obviously a Group 2 guy. Some could say that our tactic to attack 20km out was naive, orthodox, ambitious but I prefer just to say it was plain stupid!! But great fun though, I thought the KK stage was a blast! Visit our forum, I wrote a wee diary about the ToI - I'm sure you'll have a different view of the events!! We're really hoping a lot of the ToI guys can make it, have a mini-reunion!!

The link, copied and paste from the address bar, is:

If that doesn't work, please try www.marblecitycyclers.com and connect from the home page, or google Tour de Kilkenny.

To answer your question Deisetrek, the sign-on will be opened from 7.45 onwards. I reckon Ill come down if ye come up to the Polka Dot you have ridden it all already. Good luck with M2M record attempt next week. As coach would say KEEP IT LIT. ;-D

Esroh, I would have made the trip but we're in France for the l'Etape that weekend. I'm sure it will be good but I've spend too much to stay at home to go!!!

The two of us has made a pact that we'll spend the 20 hours odd on Friday week convincing ye all to come down. We're hoping ye'll crack b4 us!!

When did I do the Polka Dot, I don't think I have to be honest.

Ya sure you took the training weekend off to get over the Trauma of losing your home stage in a 20km sprint so you missed riding it. I'll be there

I have sent a suggestion to the organisers that they push the start back to 10am as there is a train at 7:30am on Saturday morning from Dublin that would get into Kilkenny at 9:24am. I am sure this would be of interest to Dublin based people.

    Folks

A number of people have requested route details. The route is 99% finalised at the moment and very unlikely to change but we are just waiting on seal of approval from the Gardai.

On the day of the event the route will be clearly marked out etc.

If you go on to the www.mapmyride.com website and go to "Search For Rides", type in "Tour De Kilkenny" and this should bring up details of all 3 routes that have been planned.

You will be able to get information on the profile/elevation of the course there to.

    Regards

I got a reply on this - essentially it's too late to change this year but would be something that would be considered for future years.

I think everyone is hoping that we will, so they can have another good laugh at us when the pass us out again...

Anyway on the day I'll be on the ground to speak, off the bike, throwing out the orders, hoping someone will actually be listening to them.

Are you joking!!! There were a group of 18 cyclists and an excellent back-up crew of eight.

A certain Padraig Marrey from Western Lakes CC organised and managed the whole thing.

Commendments MCC on getting local hotty TV personality Evanne Ní Chuilinn to show for photo shoot, adds a bit of welcomed glamour. I'm wondering if Malcolm will remember saying he'd do one of the events?

I am actually thinking of doing this. My parents will be in Ireland, so it would be good if they see something different than Dublin this year.

Any chance I could blag a lift down to this from someone? Had a bit of an incident a couple of weeks ago and no longer have a vehicle.

EDIT: Never mind, I think I have one.

Sorry there for the delay in responding, I've only returned home today from L'Etape (some buzz, highly recommended).

Anyway to answer your question, I can recommend the following based on their locations (as I live in KK, I actually have no idea what they're actually like). All these are less than two miles from the start and about 10 minutes walk into town for the pubs n'clubs. The start is at the Kilkenny rugby club, which is less than a mile out the Waterford Road.
As for hotels, these are all in good locations: Rivercourt Hotel, The Pembroke Hotel, Ormonde Hotel, Hotel Kilkenny. The Springhill Hotel is nearest to the KK rugby club but it would be some walk at 3am in the morning!!

Let me know if you have any questions on the above or any other accommodation.

My lift has evaporated, alas. Anyone driving down from Dublin morning of with room for one more?

For folks heading to this, that are not from Kilkenny, I would recommend Rinucinni's for pre cycle carbo loading, the night before. And Tynans Bridge Mills for post cycle carbo refuelling.

Would love to go, but cant make this one.

I have had no takers(easy for me free bed in Carlow). I'll put the word out again.
I'm really looking forward to this, Thomastown was my spiritual home during my youth. Never thought I'd be cycling from Graige to Inistoige:D
Think PM is racing that w/end as he organising the B.robe 2 day following w/end and not able to ride.

    MarbleCityCycle,

I was registered online for it, should i be waiting any number or anything through the post? Or i just appear on the registration? How it's going to work. The site is a bit vague.

    Cheers!
