Forecast looks pleasant tomorrow. Anyone going for a spin?

I'd be up for a decent one, no Boards 200 shenanigans though.

+1, need to do something not involving sitting at a computer....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

10am, Luas Bridge, Dundrum. Route to be decided but will involve heading towards Laragh?

Sally Gap - Laragh - Wicklow Gap - Lakes is 125km, could be a goer? Turn backs for shorter at Sally Gap and Laragh.

    Sounds good.

(Was thinking of Laragh as I want to go to that hippy cafe again)

Is anyone else sick of the same routes in Wicklow? We need new destinations people!

Go on Raam, say it: the North side.

125 from dundrum is 165 for me ... not sure yet - will see

I have a few alternatives both north and south side (and west) but they don't involve the big hills. There are alternatives down in Wicklow too for that matter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,901 ✭✭✭lukester

    I'm happy to go wherever.

I'd be up for that....almost back on speaking terms with the bike after WW200 :D

If one heads north via St. Margaret's and Oldtown then turn left at the Naul towards Drogheda you do encounter a couple of decent-ish climbs. Good training for anyone thinking about a sub-4hr Tour of Louth time.

I am. I was down in Newbridge for work during the week. Took the train down and cycled home. Might be an idea to take a train somewhere and cycle back to Dublin of a Saturday morning. Anyways, that's for another day, I'm out as I'm going on a club spin.

I would actually be up for Howth hill repeats...anyone fancy heading from Dundrum?

If not then I will fall back in line and say "yes sir" to wicklow, either one is good for me.

Doing Howth hill repeats starting from Dundrum is nuts IMHO, you are right on the doorstep of better hills and Howth is a long cycle through the city just to get there.

This is derailing a bit- lets keep it to the plan of towards Laragh for tomorrow, we can plan something more varied for the next one.

Apologies sir, it won't happen again.

I'm not fond of passing across the eastlink, but Howth is nice.

Why is it nuts? If the man wants a change of scenery...

It is nuts to start in Dundrum to do Howth Hill repeats. Howth hill repeats make sense for people on the northside to do on a weekday evening... Saturday has the opportunity for a longer spin in the countryside with less traffic, traffic lights, etc.

poor dirk has been trying to cross the southside border ... let him through god dammit!!!! he needs to know what it's like on DSN!

Surely they can make that choice for themselves?
I'm putting it out there as it's what I'd like to do and I'd love a bit of company.

No! Especially not Dirk. Need a bit of a mini-epic tomorrow at least and Howth is just not epic. I'd have the same view of Killiney hill BTW.

I know what the folks in cycleogical might call that. Don't worry about me, I'm well able to make my own decisions, either spin sounds good. Might wait and see what I get up to later on.

I'll drink your pint again if you don't come to Howth. Actually I'll drink it anyway.

He is but a pawn in the northside - southside struggle.

Here's a 128km route that avoids both Sally Gap and the Wicklow Gap. We could do it either direction, maybe starting up Bohernabreena would suit northsiders better?

I have wanted to do exactly this for quite a while now, (comments on other threads re trains excepted).
I actually have a longing to cycle the Slieve Blooms, and have worked out a nice figure of 8 loop with three reasonable climbs if anyone is interested some w/e.
BTW, train to Portlaoise with loop of Slieve Blooms and back to Dublin works ou about 160-180km depending on route - so very doable.

Thats a pretty tasty route actually. The backroads to Ballymore Eustace are great for cycling on. May give it a try on Sunday.

Those tiring of same routes to Laragh might consider the following (its incomplete due to mmr going bonkers on me). Ive used this route up twice recently and its pretty free of traffic - it also puts you in a nice position to go up Lugalla and Sally gap from the East or continue onto Laragh for coffee.

    http://www.mapmyride.com/route/ie/dublin/392124481107849076

Head to Enniskerry, take left following W100 route and continue on that road (avoiding climb up old road to Djouce) - follow road down into Kilmac village - taking right at first roadabout - head south on N11 for about 1.5K til you reach garden centre on LHS. Take exit of N11 on left, following road up and over N11 - take left and start on 'Red Lane'. This road will bring you up onto the Calary road, and your back on a familiar route to Laragh.

The hill at Red Lane is worth taking a look at for repeats imho.

May not suit you guys tomorrow but its a challenging route that wont take all day.

    Yep.

    Train to Portlaoise/Ballybrophy.
Twice over the Slieve Blooms on a different pass and back to Dublin via Portarlington/Properous/Clane.

We went out that way once on a Boards spin last year, it was very pleasant indeed. Ballymore Eustace has a few places that would be viable lunch options too (around the €10-12 mark I think) although that time we just had sandwiches by the river.

Looks a nice route. Very important question, where would lunch happen? Looks like the mid-point is right after Slieve Maan (travelling clockwise).

It's my only bit of Assos kit- a vintage piece from Look taking the La Vie Claire colours and overlaying a tiger print. Doesn't get much more Euro than that!

If we did it clockwise I was thinking Ballymore Eustace which is 90km in. The other way around, Laragh.

Well, if anyone is interested, I am going hoping to drive to Mounrath next Sunday (21st), and aim for a 120-150km version of a loop around.

My wifes car could take 3 other people plus bikes.
As long as people dont mind that I am a novice driver (and crashed into a bridge recently), then I would be more than happy to drive.
Incidently I have driven from Limerick to Dublin, with a bike rack on the car.

On the Swords extravaganza recently I mentioned to Tom and Caroline that I had more or less a nice 120km ish route done up (partly in my head and partly on map my ride). It's not a bad route with some stingers and plenty of rolling roads and laneways plus the odd pedestrian bridge.
If anyone is interested let me know and I will start a whole new thread.

n the topic of the alternatives from the usual Saturday. Am wondering if over the summer there will be midweek rides. I guess with after work meet about 6ish. Nice 3.5/4 hr spin. Anyway let me know, as I would be interested come July thru Sept.

I guess this is aimed at non-racers, given that a fair few folk race on midweek nights.

Yeah, I'd definitely be up for some evening spins. Will be doing some pre-work spins up to Howth hopefully starting soon too, so that'd be handy to vary the sessions.

When do people race during the week?

Yes and bcmf is planning on winning it I think.
