Hairstyles with 'weight' on top

My hair has thinned a lot in the last couple of years (separate problem!) and now I find it looks super greasy and flat to my head the day after I wash it. I have layers but they are long so basically my hair is long and straight. I had a hairstyle a few years back with lots of short layers and it suited me as it gave my hair more 'shape'. The only problem was that it was rather emo-ish, and now as a 24 year old woman, I don't want anything emo-ish or mullety. I was wondering if anyone had this type of style or any pictures? I was thinking of basically a medium bob (past chin length but not to shoulders) with the layers..

Well my hair is short so I can't advise much on layers, but it is also extremely fine and looks greasy the day after washing (so wash it every day, pretty much...)
I know it might take a while, but if you blowdry it with a little volume it can help a good bit? That's how I manage

  • Blowdrying and using volumising spray really works, hair looks great and thick after washing, but the day after is always a disaster and I'm trying to avoid having to wash it every day :(

I'm super greasy the day after too.

The only time I could go more than a day between showers was when I was on accutane.

I think the one-day-do is something we fine haired ladies have to live with. I have lovely, shiny, healthy hair - as long as I wash it every day. If I try to get a second day out of it I look like I have fallen scalp first into a vat of cooking oil. The worst bit is when people who don't have fine hair tell you that your hair wouldn't get that way if you didn't wash it as often because you're washing away the natural oils. That's all very well and good, but when the oils weigh more than the strands of hair they're on, unless you have one hell of a sexy scull you're buggered.

The John Frieda Brilliant Brunette mousse is fantastic, as are the volumising shampoo and moisturising conditioner, imho. Also, instead of blowing your hair upside down, blow it to the side (i.e. dry all your hair on the left side of your head over to the right, and vice versa, like a mad comb-over.)

OP, dry shampoo, like Batiste, might help you to get a second day from your hair, but it might also swamp your fine hair - it's a trial and error thing, I guess. I don't find it works for me, but my sister who has similar hair to me swears by it.

I used to find lots of short layers on top is a bit flyaway personally, but if it worked for you maybe your hairdresser could advise something that compromises the emo-ness and the weight? They're probably in a better position to advise you as they know your hair.

I'm currently growing my hair to be like the style of Gwyneth Paltrow in Sliding doors

It does add volume, now it's shorter than you want but that bit longer it wouldn't look much different.

Its also fairly easy to manage, I have frizzy, fine and thick hair, and I can blowdry it in ten mins. Never looks as good as the hair dresser tho! :D

    Thanks for the advice!
Yeah I hate it when people with dry, dyed-to-death hair try to tell you how to manage fine, oily hair! There is a world of difference. I'm not sure what happened but I used to get an extra day out of a wash. Now it looks awful e even the day after washing.

The dry shampoo helps but I find it a) stinks and b) gives my hair a dull/ greyish tinge even after being brushed out. It's miles better than nothing but I hate to think about all the chemicals in it!

It's a lot of work having oily hair! I totally know what you mean, it looks perfect after washing but so downhill even 12 hours later. I'm considering washing it every day but that's so much effort :(

Did you move to another area? I find when I wash my hair at home (Tipperary) it lasts the full day, and maybe the morning of the next day if I'm really lucky, but when I lived near the M50 I was running home from work to wash it in the evening. I've moved again recently, and my hair lasts much longer here too. The water makes a difference too.

  • I did actually, I moved to Belgium! I think that might be the problem. Hoping that when I move back I see a difference. I remember when I lived in Spain, my hair and skin never looked better - I guess because of the water. It's crazy how much difference it makes.

Volumising mousse, backcombing and drying your hair properly (round barrelled brush, separate hair into sections and twist brush from root to tips to lift hair when drying) will make a world of difference I'd say. HTH

I've very fine pretty straight hair which used to look like a limp sheet when I had it long.

I got it cut up shortish (layered with the longest layer coming to just below my shoulders) and I find that for the second day, if you don't want to wash and blowdry it, just dampen your hands a bit with water and scruch it through your hair (head turned upside-down), followed by a scrunch of mousse, then let it dry and brush it out a bit, or give it a very quick blast of a hairdryer, and the hair looks fuller and thicker again.

I've even managed to get it to curl doing this (plenty of mousse straight away after washing it properly, and scrunch the heck out of it), which is a feat in itself given my hair used to be pretty much poker straight.

Spray gel seems to work well too - spritz over your hair and scrunch it up/fluff it up a bit. Adds decent volume.

I've more volume at the back in my hair, it's longer at the front with short layers at the crown. I can backcomb the layers then whenever I want extra volume.

It depends how short your hair is but I'd just ask for shorter layers at the back, that way it won't fall flat.
