No benefit for you in them taking it down. Id say send them an invoice. Don't go crazy with the amount though.

Your work though you deserve to be compensated

How much is the norm for such a thing?

I sent them an invoice for €35.

Should be interesting to see what happens.

What really annoys me is that these web designers think they can just pull images from a site & use them like that. You wonder how many of the other images on the site have been stolen too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭dazftw

How did you know they were using it? Through flickr? Also how did you go about sending them an invoice? Just like a normal email?

I always see these threads but never understood how to actually send an invoice.. Apart from the ones you get when you buy stuff online or in a shop..

Easiest €35 you'll ever make, lol

But that must annoy you, I have to admit id be pretty annoyed if I just stumble across something like that

There should be no problem about sorting it out. Your photo is clearly marked "All Rights Reserved"

Chances are they'll just ignore the invoice and maybe quietly take down the picture, even that's probably a best case scenario :(

total fluke, that image came up through a google search and I tracked it back to see on what page it was. Their image was ranked higher then mine.

I just emailed them. The website had a livechat where I talked to an agent to get an email address. Nothing back yet from there.

    Good point.

My flickr stats spiked today! 165 views overall, 115 of 'that photo', 71% from boards!

At least one of the other photos on the 'Wexford' page has been taken from another flickr user. I'd say if you searched around, you could find more.

    What?
    All those are my own.

More photos on the Irish Experience website seem to have their origins on flickr, that's all :)

    Check out the one from

Cool, thought you meant the 'Wexford' set of mine.

    No contact back from there.

A lot of sites use agencies to find photos for them, so you may have to discover who it is exactly who chose to upload your photo in the first place, which is time consuming... as this blogger found:

    http://blog.twilightfairy.in/2008/09/01/toi-believes-flickr-is-for-flicking/

I spent some time looking at copyright about 18 months ago and it was a revelation.

    http://members.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=58296185

I stopped uploading photos directly to Blogger because of the way they were searched by Google and found Flickr better.

At the moment I'm uploading directly to Boards.ie as it saves time and energy. Perhaps this could be a safe option for you too?

if they don't pay, make a copyright infringement complaint. it's likely that they got all their photos from flickr. actually, don't waste your time. They're based in india

Or put a copyright/watermark on all pics you upload

As a web designer I just DO NOT understand this behaviour - legal stock photos can be used for literally a few quid. If you do hear back from them, you might want to point out that their web designers have placed them in what could be a very awkward legal situation for the sake of a pittance. And they probably spent thousands on the site. Grrr.. gives us all a bad name

I hope you get paid :)

TinEye is a great resource for finding out if your photos are being used elsewhere. I just spent half an hour having a gander...seems you're not the only one this is happening to...

I have to agree. I tried it there with some images of mine that are used on a few blogs, it didn't find anything.

I think a photo has to be quite high profile to show up with more than one link in Tinyeye.

    For example:

    http://tineye.com/search/159cdca8c8f0ada88d5492d5a609704d1683179f

The photo showed up at once, but it is not being used in any context on the net.

Bloggers are getting great mileage out of Flickr flicking...

    http://mutiny.in/2008/09/26/toi-flicks-an-image-off-flickr-again/

This is an age-old problem. What strikes me is the number of photos on Flickr that are almost identical. I play a sort of "snap" game to see who has been to the same place and taken similar photos as my own.

What photo sharing site is the safest if one wishes to protect work?

No word back yet, but my flickr stats are through the roof! 300 views for that photo now.

I'll just start watermarking, the images I guess. Is there an easy way to do this in GIMP?

I flickrmailed the owner of that other wexford image on the site, he wrote back and didn't seem surprised about them doing this. He is contacting them as well today.

To put this all very bluntly - it is the internet!! this should be expected, mark your photos if you dont want them used.

For what purposes do you put your photos on flickr for?

    Nope, not expecting much tbh.

I put them up so people could see them I guess - get feedback etc etc..

I hate that attitude. It's the same one as "serves you right for being in town after dark" and "what did you expect, having an expensive phone like that".

While I agree that "I told you so" is not helpful, I know more people who have been mugged after dark (including myself) than during the day and who have, when taking risks, exposed themselves to more annoyances to those who take no risks at all.

I have found links to my Flickr photos on various sites around the net. Most of them have the honourable practice of linking back to the original page.

I think I know what your trying to say, but in fairness every picture on the site does have U000A9.png All rights reserved

Plus the general rule of the internet is you can't use a picture without permission

ah lads its not an "i told you so attitude" but you have to realise the amount of piracy on the internet. It IS to be expected. My advice is that you watermark it.
    Tallon wrote: »

I will often do a google images search and if i find a nice pic I will use it as a wallpaper. Anyone else ever do this? Anyone else ever download music? Anyone here download movies? Maybe ye dont but there are MILLIONS who do.

Mark photos that you dont want people to use is all Im saying and dont think that there arent websites ripping good quality photos and selling them as their own work too. Very naive to think otherwise.

Half the internet will not respect that at all.

I have a free Flickr account and have just discovered one of the advantages of not having a professional account. Original size photos cannot be dowloaded from a free account:

    http://www.flickr.com/help/forum/27533/?search=originals

When using Internet sites to store large images, it would seem sensible to keep it private and accessible only to friends.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

With a 'Pro' account you can change your settings to not allow anyone see the larger image sizes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,503 ✭✭✭smelltheglove

Fajitas is right, all of my images can be seen in one size only, you can allow large images but if you want to ensure nobody can steal a decent quality image you real should deactivate this.

This is one of the reasons that I dislike flickr - their terms and conditions which lets them hold onto the an original size not releasing it back to you (effectively) I hate. Having said that I now only upload 800px longest side images so I shouldn't let this worry me tbh ;) It did bother me previously when I was looking for an original of one of my images in a hurray. I knew I had sent it to flickr but not having a pro account meant that they wouldn't give it back to me.

I think people should have a definite personal policy as to using online photo sites - as sharing - rather than a comprehensive backup solution.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,503 ✭✭✭smelltheglove

agreed also with an cat, i resize my images down even though i have a pro account.

Watermarking is also a deterrent and tips for making more subtle effects could be useful. I've started running copright notices along lines within a photograph:

    http://shortsights.blogspot.com/2009/09/like-marks-in-water.html#links

It has also been said that popular photographers have their work taken less often than those who have a low profile.
