I believe Kilkenny have no midfielders for this one, with both Cha and Derek Lyng injured .

Anyone know where they could find some ?

Hogan is out too so Kilkenny might be slighly understrength.I'd say Cody knows who he'll bring in for cover.

    Kilkenny to win by 7.

    It is.

Though I don't know why the two semis couldn't have been a Croke Park double-header, with Dublin involved alongside 3 other teams I'd have expected a decent crowd. That said, I do think it's no harm to use the provincial grounds a bit more.

Can't say I've much faith in Galway at the moment. Far too often they've promised alot and delivered nothing. One of these years it will come together but whether it'll be 2009 I don't know. I doubt it. Win or lose against Kilkenny the performance is key, if Galway can keep it reasonably close and show some real fight (that has been missing in recent years) then I'd be satisfied with that for now. Just something to show that the team is heading in the right direction. If it's a 15 point hammering and another gutless performance then we may just forget about hurling and stick to the football.

Saturday is a ****ing retarded day to have this match on. I'm feeling so confident for this match.

Anybody else going to Offaly for this match of the year candidate?

I think Kilkenny are bound to be on the receiving end of a shock soon enough, maybe Galway in their first proper Leinster match could do it? I thought it was primed for a Wexford Park ambush of KK but the draw fecked it up. Would be great to see a Wexford-Galway final so Wexford finally get to play a final with some mild belief they could win it.

No a Dublin-Galway final would be a closer match IMO

Inclined to agree that Kilkenny will get stung at some stage. This is what Galway have wanted and if they are not to wound up this could be the day.

It would be great to see Dublin in a final against anyone:)
I think it is good to use provincial grounds anything less than 50,000 in Croke Park is a waste.

Diabhal Beag, Saturday suits a lot of people who have to work on Sundays. I would nearly prefer more matchs to be played on Saturday evenings.

Yeah I agree Dublin would probably put up a better match but tribalism towards Wexford makes me want that moreso!

I would love to see Galway beat them. If they played like Tipp did in the league final, anything is possible. Also, they beat KK in 2001 and 2005!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 242 ✭✭MotteDai

Are Galway the last Team to beat KK? IMHO i can't see it, I would love to but I havent yet seen this team preform as a 'Team'.
JC is a great advantage but he can't do much on his own and im sure Brian Cody will plan to ensure the ball goes no where near him. It'll be interesting but I see either an honerable defeat in late stages by KK or a total hammering..

Still might be worth a few euro as im sure Galway will be big odds.. 2 horse race and all that.

this will bring a big crowd to Tullamore. the galway crowd are used of Saturday evening club games. I'd say Galway will give them a good game. might not have enough to beat the cats, but could set them up for a run through the back door

If Galway play rough within the rules, like Tipp did, they are well able to beat Kilkenny. I also hope Tommy Walsh gets the treatment he usually throws out at other players!

Should have been a double header in Croker with free admission for the kids.

Been talking to a couple of the Galway selectors.
The cats have a few injurys, and Galway are well up for the battle.
    Galway by 3 pionts.

Do Galway really have the players capable of matching KK physically though??

And I wouldnt say that about Tommy Walsh either to me the guy is in top 3 hurlers in the country and is a genius tbh - and I say that as a very envious Tipp man ;)

True but we have Joe Canning :pac:

according to the star this morning joe is rated 50/50 with a groin injury for sat........huge blow to galway. still think there will only be a couple of points in it, head says the cats but love to see leinster pay off for galway in the first season cause it would silence a lot of doubters that the move should ever had been made to let them into leinster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 260 ✭✭portumna

Seemingly Ollie is fine but there's a doubt about Joe. Some stomach/grion problem thats been troubling him for a while.

As for walsh he is some man. Plays to the edge of the rules like all good hurlers but never seen him as a dirty player. Fair enough he threw the hurl at someone once but so have a good few others. I think i remember Ollie Canning doing the same thing last year or the year before.

Joe Canning would be a huge loss, a fatal blow I'd say. But there's no
use risking him if he's not fit. Win or lose on Saturday there will be another game to come.

Always hard to know with Galway going into these sort of games. Could end with anything from a Galway win to a 15 points defeat. The percentage call has to be Kilkenny though. If they're even at 85% of their best they should prevail by 4 or 5 points at least, possibly more.

Good idea in theory, but it wouldn't work. There was a dismal 18,000 at the Leinster Final last year between KK and WX. Galway never bring a huge support and for Dublin's match against Wexford last year, they didn't bring many. These provincial grounds put a lot of work in and the atmosphere would be a lot better than an empty Croker.

As for the result, Kilkenny by 5. And Dublin by 4. (No bias:D:D:D:D)

It was reported in all the papers, so the only question is whether we can trust the Galway management ;)

Ger Loughnane is gone (thank Christ). Joe would be a huge loss if he misses out.

I'm kind of surprised this game didn't get top billing for the weekend ie. the 4pm sunday slot instead of playing second fiddle to Tipp v Clare. Seems a poor decision to push such a high profile game back to the Saturday evening slot. Especially it being Galways first game in Leinster which if anything adds to the occasion.

The TV schedule and fixture list would have been decided in advance. Plus TV3 have the Tipp vs Clare game, even if they could doubt they would agree to move it to help RTE

That explains it. I wouldn't expect TV3 to give away their prime slots of course. On the plus side there is a feast of games over Saturday and Sunday being shown between the 2 channels.

Looks like Cha will be fit, but Hickey might be out. If Hickey is out I guess that Delaney will play full back

    http://www.rte.ie/sport/gaa/championship/2009/0617/kilkenny.html
Brian Cody's Kilkenny have been given a major boost after James 'Cha' Fitzpatrick was given the all-clear to face Galway in the semi-final of the Leinster SHC at Tullamore on Saturday.

The influential midfielder has shaken off a hand injury and is expected to start for the Cats, who are chasing their fourth All-Ireland in a row.

Kilkenny selector Martin Fogarty told the Irish Sun: 'Cha is coming on well at the moment and should be fine.'

However, full-back Noel Hickey shipped a leg injury last weekend and is running out of time to prove his fitness.

Fogarty confirmed: 'Noel suffered a bit of a setback over the weekend. He hurt his leg. It is a setback so we will have to monitor that situation over the coming days.'

the loss of Noel Hickey will be a big blow to KK if he's not fit, of course its all academical if Joe Canning isn't fit, Galway need him if they've any chance of winning. KK will be wary of the Tribesmen from previous years and i expect it to be a tight match, with the Cats coming out on top by 3-4 points.

I have a good feeling about this one. For a change lots of people I have been talking to about this match have a positive outlook. Even if it does turn out to be a disaster for Galway. They are not gone from the championship like last year against Cork. I wouldn't believe Canning is out for this one, probably the management trying to pull a fast one.

Tipp have shown the way to unsettle Kilkenny in the league final and Galway like Tipp are in general a young fast team. Galway probably have more finishing forwards than Tipp so if they got into the position Tipp were in, they may be able to take better advantage of it. The defence is the problem. It's very much a case of scoring more than they will concede. Even if you go back to 2005 (a game most of the current team are still living off), Galway scored 5-18 but they conceded 4-18. They were also 8/9 points up at one stage and allowed Kilkenny back into it. Kilkenny were also missing Noel Hickey that day and it's hard to imagine Kilkenny would have leaked 5 goals with Hickey there.

2007 Galway showed up well and while most people would think that Fergals Moores loss that day was the reason Kilkenny evevtually finished us off, I think it was the replacement of Iarla Tannian. Up until his replacement, Tannian had been doing a decent marking job on Tommy Walsh, stifling the supply of ball to the lethal Kilkenny forward line not giving them the chance to take on the already weak Galway full-back line, which had been further weakened by the loss of Moore. After Tannians replacement, Walsh resumed normal service to the forwards allowing them to do the neccessary damage. If Tommy Walsh could be successfully contained again like that Galway could have a chance.

Also, for me, if Kilkenny have a weakness, it could be Kavanagh in the corner. This was shown up in the league final and he was eventually taken off. If Niall Healy or Damien Hayes got the right supply of ball they could exploit this weakness.

Galway have nothing to loose really and maybe they will open up and play to their abilities when it isn't a knock out game (last year against Cork). No matter what happens they will learn from it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,708 ✭✭✭Erin Go Brath

I think Galway will get a few goals off the kilkenny full back line. Kilkenny are beatable when its put up to them, and Galway have the full forwards to do just that. Fascinating game, really looking forward to it.
