I just watched George Lee's presentation on 'how we blew the boom'... and I was just wondering if you could go back in time a few years, how would you have spent your money differently...an obvious question, I know... and of course, property is going to figure highly on the list.

But apart from property, have you bought a handbag for €500 and are now on the dole? Or 'upgraded' to a better class of BMW/Merc... and now cant sell it?

I bought a house in 06, but apart from that, I havent gone too mad

    My car :(

Had a grand little Peugeot 206 for a year and then decided that it wasn't good enough anymore. Bought a 04 Golf last year (well partly on finance) for 15k....would get about 8k for it now if lucky! Also used a big chunk of my savings towards it.

I think spending around 10 grand on cigarettes was my least wise investment over the past 3 years.
But at least I don't have a mortgage.

The one that sticks out at me most is an LP I bought on eBay for about 80 or 90 euros that I didn't even want.

There were four rare LPs by a band up for auction which were ending within five minutes of one another. I wanted the first two the most and, with around one or two minutes to go, the bidding was only at about €30. With about five seconds left, I bid €75 and got defeated with eBay's automatic bidder (the previous high-bidder puts in his "highest price" and when I bid anything less than that price, eBay automatically puts in a bid €1 higher than what I bidded). When the second LP rolled around, I bid €80 and again get defeated by the automatic bidder with seconds left in the auction. By the time the third one was up, I was getting pissed off. Even though I didn't want the fecking thing, I bid €80 and again got outbid automatically. Considering I had gotten up at 4am to buy these fecking LPs, I was getting royally pissed off that I kept losing so I bid €100 on the last one, without even thinking about whether or not I wanted it. So I won the thing in the end (the other guy's highest price was around €85 evidently) and ended up having to fork out another €15 on shipping for a record I didn't even want.

It still pisses me off to this day. Haven't sold the fecking thing yet.

I have made other foolish purchases though, some of which you can find under my name on adverts.ie! 7-string guitar, a stupid amount of DVDs, other stupidly-expensive records, a guitar amp I didn't need, a drum set I rarely used, etc.

My only consolation is that I spent twice as much as that on drink and having a good time, so it can't all have been too bad.

Christmas/Birthday presents for the kids - don't get me wrong I do love them!.. (I swear!) but kids whine on and on and on for the latest gimicky toy and put severe pressure on you to obtain it (sometimes by forking out extra on the likes of Ebay if its out of stock) and then 1 or two weeks after Christmas\Birthday the bloody said item is either dumped\broken\or given away to one of their mates and they are on to their next fad!!... the amount of money I have wasted in the past 3 years on Doctor Who\Transformer\Star Wars Lego etc etc phases is depressing!!.. soon I will be moving onto the 'Gift Voucher' phase!!.. ;)
