Intelligentsia group buy

Is there interest in another group coffee buy?

As one who has benefitted from other's organisation twice now, I'd be happy to look after the buying and collection arrangements. I've also got a suggestion - I've a HotTop roaster here, and I know there's various other home roasters amongst folks here - how about a roaster show'n'tell session when picking up the beans? I'm located in the city centre and there's ample space in the garden for the smokiest of roasters. Might be nice some sunny weekend afternoon.

    Thoughts?

    Mmm coffee. Yes.

    Great stuff.

Any clever ideas about what roastery's beans to buy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,473 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

The sky is the limit. Are people more interested in espresso or filter I wonder?

I hear Black Cat is pretty good at the moment...

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,443 Mod ✭✭✭✭Mr Magnolia

It'd be nice if they'd reverted back to the Black Cat of early last year. The El Machete looks appealing too.

Espresso is my preference but don't let that stop ye.

Do Intelligentsia deliver here as a matter of course, or do you need to talk to someone?

    Where do you order from?
    What way does one pay?

alastair, I'd say you'd have to mail them and tell them what we're planning, we've used them twice before (RE*AC*TOR & ch2008 I think) so it should be no problem.
    BlueMonke wrote: »

We make a list here of what every one wants and then one of us places the order and has the delivery sent to them. We then meet up and distribute, sometimes have a cupping session at the meet. All good fun and anyone's welcome to join.
    What way does one pay?
That's up to the person that organizes the buy. We could pay via paypal in advance of the order or pay when we meet to distribute.

The shipping is normally around $150 & there could be $50 in duty. This total is divide between the group equally based on the weight of coffee ordered per person. It generally works out around the same price as buying coffee here, the point is that we're getting some of the best coffee from around the world 2/3 days post-roast plus it's an excuse to get together.

And recoup expenses from the late duty charges of last time! - Not forgotten! :)

    I'd be interested!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,309 ✭✭✭✭alastair

Okay then - here's my suggestion.

We opt for Intelligentsia, and keep with the Yankee coffee theme by going for a 4th of July collection (It's a Saturday).

That'd mean ordering about the 25th or so (I'd guess?), so the head count starts here:

All interested in the fine beans at http://www.intelligentsiacoffee.com/ stick up their name and order in this thread, on or before Wednesday 24th (next week). Everyone on board at that time can sort out payment at collection (city centre), or by paypal - whichever they prefer. Total postage will be calculated on the Thursday - once we know what weight we're dealing with.

edit: just checked and orders on the Friday don't get roasted until the Monday, so we should really get the order in on the 25th (Thurs) to be safe for a 4th July collection.

    Lovely jovely

2 Kilos of Black Cat for me please! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,309 ✭✭✭✭alastair

I reckon I'll go for the following:

Black Cat Classic Espresso - 1 kilo
Los Inmortales, El Salvador - 1 pound
Anjilanaka, Organic Bolivia - 1 pound
El Diablo Dark Roast - 1 pound

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,473 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

We don't want it roasted till the Monday!!

If it's roasted and shipped on the Friday it'll just sit in a freight depot over the weekend.

    Anyway, for me:

    1/2 lb El Machete $8.50
    1/2 lb Los Immortales $8.50
    1lb Black Cat Classic $14
    1 x Chicago Flag Mug $7

Don't get pre-ground. Really. I'll give you a lend of a hand grinder while you are waiting for yours to arrive. You can post or drop it back to me when you're done.

Pre-ground would really be a waste.

Black cat for brewed coffee? Or strictly espresso types? I have a kilo of coffee at home from hasbean to get through. :)

What's so special about those mugs? I hate 2D. Can't tell how large they are. I'm in the market for a large, thick walled mug though.

The mugs are just diner mugs, ubiquitous in the US. They are very thick walled, the thickest I've come across, but only hold about 200-250mls I think, so not v.big. I have a couple of plain ones, love em to bits. The crook of the handle is very pleasing to hold.

Black Cat is an espresso blend, of course you can brew it, but why would you when there are so many stunning filter offerings? Single origin / or even filter blends (which you hear little of these days)....

It was only as a last resort really. I was at the 2nd stage of paying for a PeDe yesterday when I got called away and the session timed out. When I came back it had been sold :E
E-mailed them after and they said they will have a few more during the week. Just today an SS one went up, but the missus is dubious about it given the lack of a pic or description.

Anyone know of a good place to get Canisters to hold the beans? Pref with a Glass window?

    For My order:
1/2 Pound Black Cat Classic $7.50
    1/2 Pound Flecha Roja $9
1/2 Pound Quetzal Breakfast Blend $7.50

I use these jars from Ikea: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/20112520
It has a window in the lid, but stacking them keeps them in the dark (except for the top ones obviously!) - best of both worlds.

Just a reminder - order goes out a week today, so if you fancy a bag or two of fancy beans (or a fat mug for that matter), get your name on the list next week.

    1 x Snowball Mug $4
    1 x Chicago Flag Mug $7

I need help a little help. I like coffee, but I don't know what to buy. Sorry RE*AC*TOR, but I just couldn't fall in love with the gaggia, no matter how hard I tried (and I _really_ tried), so I'll need beans for brewing but not for espresso.

I'm looking forward to the El Machete Khannie, you might try that and the La Tortuga Honduras or the Los Immortales. I just had a read of the descriptions and selected a couple by what I enjoy in a coffee.

Khannie, based on what I know of your tastes, I'd maybe consider some of their filter blends. The house blend perhaps...

No worries on the Gaggia. I brew filter more these days than espresso tbh.

Fair play. I just needed a nudge.

    Ok, I'm in so:

    Intelligentsia House Blend - 1lb - $13
    Flecha Roja Mug - $4

Thanks for PM Mr Magnolia :)

(anyone recommend a good mobile broadband? :pac:)

Enjoy the buy and meet, hope to join in next time.

    I'd like
    • 1lb Black Cat Classic $14
    • ½ lb Black Cat Espresso Anjilanaka Organic Bolivia $12.50
    • ½ lb La Tortuga, Honduras $8.00
(all whole roast beans: I'm sure that's what everyone's getting!). I'll be away from June 24 to July 1, so I won't be responding between those dates. The order date is not exactly explicit above: do I gather that it would be ordered on Friday July 3 for roast on Monday July 6 and collection later that week?

That would be fine for me.

I'd like to get in on the group buy. The only catch for me is that I'm down in Kerry for a weeks holidays from July 4th so won't be able to pick up until Sunday 12th assuming thats okay with the OP.

It's a bit ambiguous to me- although they say

If you place an order before midnight Sunday -Thursday (Central Time Zone), your coffee will be roasted, packed and shipped the next day. Orders placed Friday and Saturday will be roasted, packed, and shipped on Monday.

    They also say:
Do you really "Roast to order"?
Yes we do. Our roasting process starts with you. When you place your order online before midnight, (Central Time Zone), your order is added to the tally of coffees to roast for the following morning. Your coffee is then roasted in the early morning, packed in the afternoon and shipped on the following day.

I'll either take cash at collection at my gaff in the city centre (hopefully on the afternoon of the 4th - bring your roaster if you've got one!), or you can paypal me beforehand - I'll post up the damage once I get word from Intelligentsia. I emailed them earlier to check if anything on the list is going to be problematic if it goes through tomorrow, but nothing back yet.
