Fun with Credit card companies

After becoming unexpectedly unemployed a while back I was in the unfortunate position of having a large credit card bill to also deal with. Now I contacted them immediatly and told them the situation and made a deal to pay a fixed amount each month just to keep the intrest down and had the card frozen and I've never missed a payment since (I'm anal about bills like that). The problem is that I always pay around the 7th of the month (or my nearest pay day to it) and it takes 3 days to go through because I pay through the post office but, without fail, every month around this time I get an harassment phone call from them "reminding" me that it's been a month since my last payment and it pisses me off!

It's ALWAY some Indian person probably from some call centre in the arsehole of Pakistan (no offense to the lovely people of India, this isn't about them I know they are only doing their job but it's no secret that most call centre work like this is routed through call centres in the east) and the language barrier makes it very frustrating to explain that I've made a payment but it takes a few days to go through and as well as that they can be quite agressive and insistant at times too so I got the usual call today and snapped. I'm sure I'm not the only person to have experienced this so this is how to deal with them.

    Me: Hello
Her: Hello Ms butterfly this is ******* from {CC company} can you please confirm your mothers maiden name
    Me: Why?
Her: Please confirm your mothers maiden name so I can verify your identity
    Me: But why?
Her: I need your maiden name so I can verify your identity
    Me: And who are you?
    Her: This is ******* from {CC company}
Me: How do I know that?
    Her: I'm sorry?
Me: Well you've just rang me from an unknown number and asked me for personal details that you could potentialy use to ring {CC company} and gain access to my account, how about you tell me my mothers maiden name so I verify your identity?
Her: But I have access to your account so I need your mothers maiden name to verify your identity
Me: Well If you have access to my account then it should be easy for you to tell me my mothers maiden name so I can verify your identity, so what is it?
    Her: ***Long pause****
Me: Is this one of those telephone scams I've been hearing about?
Her: I'm sorry I can see you don't wish to speak to me so please phone us back to ensure you are then talking to a {CC Company} representative.
    Me OK, Bye....

As yet they haven't phoned back, that's all I'm ever going to do from now on :D

Sorry for the lenght of the post but if it makes you feel any better it took longer to type than it will to read :)

not ignorant at all, i always get some semi-lingual foreigner on the phone wanting to know my name, address and phone number and security question, even though THEY rang ME?

OP, i rang my cc company to have my card frozen so the interest wouldnt keep growning, they told me that the interest would keep going on anyway so there is no point freezing the card.?

    is this true?

Actually I thought that too, thanks for clearing that up ;) As regards the "Ignorance" comment as I said this had nothing to do with the people of Pakistan/India, I only mentioned it because the language barrier makes these calls so difficult. It was to do with credit card companies constantly harassing you. It wouldn't have matter the nationallity of the person who called because I'd have done it anyway because I was pissed off with the unnessassary harrassment

Yeah unfortunatly it is but if you make a deal to pay a certain amount a month (they send you a form you need to fill out) then you only get charged the intrest and as long as you stick to the deal you don't get over the limit or late payment charges which is about 30 euro less a month and it gives you a chance to bring it down.

Simple, because I'm not the only person that has ended up in this situation and credit card companies are the most vile ****ards when it comes to harassing you to pay them and on top of that stress you have other bills you have to deal with too and their agressive phone calls don't help so that's one way to deal with them.

jesus why do people have to bring racism into it. observation is not racism..

I think you will find that the "ignorance" comment related to the fact that it would appear as though the op does not know that Pakistan and India are different countries

I am getting the same calls from, and I have no problems saying it, MBNA.

They said they can Laser Card payments and I told them I didnt have it with me and then they asked for the details of somebody who has access to my Laser Card so they could make a payment for me...

I told them I would pay in a few weeks when I had extra cash around..then they asked why I had missed my last payment and I told them I was busy...

They keep pronoucing my name wrong which is annoying. They sound more Eastern European to me.

    Ah...you spent their money.

Yes I did and I was well aware I was doing it at the time but I stopped when I could no longer afford it and now I'm paying it back (as I said) but I don't need to be made feel guilty every damn month when I've been following the agreement WE mutually made.

I have to laugh at people who think that they are in the right even though they are the ones who spent money they didn't have. The credit card companies are ringing hassling you because you owe them money. When you signed your credit card form you agreed to pay it back. The sense of entitlement is ridiculous

The employee's long commute to work aside, fair play OP. I don't like people phoning me and then getting me to prove my identity.

She had made an agreement to pay the credit card company and since she had been making regular monthly payments, the calls were not necessary.

still applies unless you are saying that there are no people from India working in Pakistan?

would I have been jumped on as quick if I'd have said

It's ALWAY some Cork person probably from some call centre in the arsehole of Dublin (no offense to the lovely people of Cork, this isn't about them I know they are only doing their job but it's no secret that most call centre work like this is routed through call centres in the pale) ?

ok.... back to the topic at hand

Credit card company making "reminder" calls despite the fact they have an agreement for payments with the OP.

Ps. on a side note: will remember to do that to the credit card company/phone/esb/bank when they phone me up next.

OP.... have you tried asking them not to contact you by phone - I think you can choose the method they contact you - I have always asked for it to be Email, that way I can just keep all the messages in a folder.
