Any advice will b really appreciated!
I'm 24,female,5"6 and weigh almost 3 stone more than i should based on BMI.
Just found out that i've an underactive thyroid so have started a low gi eating plan due to docs recommendation.
Does anyone kn what would help me lose weight along with the gi plan?
I walk our dog most days for at least half an hour.also use treadmill and wii fit at home when i have time.
Looking for a routine that people found worked well in similar circumstances.
    Hols in sept!

    Diet is the key here.
My missus had her thyroid out, so she is more or less always under now.
The most success she has had from a weight loss point of view was a Cholesterol control diet, which was essentially eating fish, fruit and veg.

With regard to exercise, we swam a lot for a while, but with a coach.
The coach pushed us, to improve fitness, eventually getting us to what I now understand is probably a High Intensity Interval Training swimming programme. Good results came there

    So HIIT stuff may help.

You are probably going to have to work harder and sacrifice a bit more to get there, because of the Thyroid.

    Good Luck.

Do the same as those without thyroid issues, eat well and train hard.

Its also worth looking into the foods that affect thyroid function.

What is eating well to people with no thyroid issues, isn't necessarily eating well for you.

Low GI is best for thyroid, but remember that until your treatment is working properly it will be very hard to lose the weight.

The wii fit really wont do a lot for you.

You need to start increasing the length of your walk and the intensity. There is no exercise that will help specifically but you should avoid certain foods as listed below. I follow a low GI, low fat/calorie diet, I get my thyroid levels checked every 6 months and exercise 5 nights per week - running, swimming and weights.

It will take some time; but once your thyroid is working and you're exercising and eating well the weight will come off , slowly but surely, just make sure the thyroid levels are within a good range. Also, it would be worthwhile to get tested for coeliac disease as people with thyroid problems tend to be more likely to develop gluten intolerance.

General Dietary and Weight Loss Advice About Hypothyroidism

    Check Your Thyroid Levels Regularly

Make sure your thyroid levels are checked regularly, so your medication is kept at the correct dosage. Thyroid function can change quite quickly and needs to be monitored at least every 6 months.
    Get Active

Take regular exercise. Physical activity is especially important if you suffer from hypothyroidism. It is essential in order to help speed up your metabolism and increase weight loss. A daily 30 minute workout, building up to 45 minutes is fine. If you currently take regular exercise, it will help to increase what you do by just 10 minutes extra per day.
    Selenium

It is also believed to help if you increase your selenium intake. This can be done by eating foods such as whole wheat bread, bran, Brazil nuts, tuna, onions, tomatoes and broccoli. Include some of these foods on a regular basis.
    Helpful Foods

Foods that are helpful for the thyroid function are: carrots, spinach, apricots, asparagus, olive oil, avocado, sunflower seeds, whole grain cereals, bananas, oily fish, so choose meals that include these foods.
    Unhelpful Foods

Foods to eat LESS of as they may interfere with iodine uptake are: cabbage, kale, broccoli, kohirabi, mustard, lima beans, linseed, sweet potato, peanuts, soy products, so keep these to a minimum. You don't need to cut them out completely.
    Avoid Stimulants

Avoid caffeine drinks like coffee, cola; avoid stimulants like smoking and alcohol as these all effect the thyroid function.
    Reduce Stress

Stress is a major factor and is thought to be a contributing factor to the development of hypothyroidism. One of the best ways to reduce stress is to take regular exercise.

OP it might be worth checking out some of leigh peele's stuff (leighpeele.com) as she has written a lot about women with hypothyroidism.

IIRC there are some subtle differences in terms of optimum training /exercise programmes with longer rest times etc. and different volume and so forth, but I don't know much about it sorry OP!
