Do you guys think that this update will win a lot of the jailbroken iphones back to the official apple firmware?

Never does, there are just too many extras in Cydia that you can't do with the standard Firmware IMHO.

It wouldn't win back jailbreak fans because the 3.0 software is already cracked, I'd say will be available to download on the day it's released.

    Simple question.

I have downloaded the Gold master of OS 3.0
I have an Italian iPhone -no need to jailbreak, unlock or anything else.

What do I do in order to update now from 2.2.1 to 3.0?

The ispw zip has unarchived a folder called "iPhone 1,2_3".

However, navigating to that from 'alt+update' doesn't seem to find anything highlighted in bold that can be opened to commence the update.

Check your trash bin. there is file iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw.zip
Remove .zip part, after that connect iPhone, go to iTunes and press restore buttun with holding option key.

BTW, I have problems with bluetooth :( Tethering doesn't work, A2DP as well.

Good man: installed, now just restoring all my apps. Then I'll put it through its paces.

am liking the landscape mode on email, mms and the voice recorder so far, spotlight is pretty nice too. instant results.

however (sad as it is) by far the best thing is being able to sign into your youtube
account for all your favourites etc. am sure i'll find other things soon..

ohh forgot about actually being able to set meetings up properly in exchange. big
update (although it was a crazyily stupid thing to have left out in the first place)

A2DP working perfectly for me (with a crappy TK Max headphone set). What's nice is there is a single profile for music and talk (unlike on my mac which has a headset and headphone profile). Haven't tried tethering yet.

Hey man, did you test A2DP with MacBook/iMac?
Probably it shouldn't work with those computer but I thought that it should be possible to broadcast music from iPhone to the iMac's speakers...

Did anybody tried tethering? My mac said that couldn't connect to device when I'm trying to use network...

That is description of my problems:
    1) "Searching" process never stops when I enable bluetooth settings.
    2) It doesn't find any bluetooth device.
    3) Neither iMac nor Macbook couldn't find iPhone if I'm "outside" bluetooth settings
    4) I can find and pair iPhone while bluetooth settings are opened on the phone
    5) After pairing if I try to use network from Mac over iPhone a have such kind of messges:
"The Bluetooth network is unavailable. There was a problem connecting your device. Make sure the devices are on, in range, paired correctly, and services such as Bluetooth tethering are set up properly" iMac
"Bluetooth network failed. Failed to open a connection to the network service. Your device may have reached its maximum number of supported network connections." MacBook
Actually MacBook tries to connect (bluetooth sign with dotted dash), iMac doesn't try at all.
    6) After pairing in Bluetooth settings I can see both Macs (iMac and MacBook) but I couldn't connect from iPhone. Searching animation still doesn't stop.

Probably it is normal behavior, A2Dp shouldn't work with Macs and tethering doesn't work because O2 blocked it... Could somebody reproduce same errors?
    Cheers!

Are you on O2? I had mms enabled on my
account and it seems to just work fine.

Have settings if you need them.

Not risking tethering myself yet as looks
like you can't install ipcc file without uninstalling
iTunes 8.2 and going for a pre-release instead.

Copy and paste is pretty handy. Copy and paste is pretty handy.Copy and paste is pretty handy. As is shake to undo!

appears still just to be on or off for push. under advanced for each account you just have push, fetch or manual options. all i'm seeing new is being able to invite people to meetings and set availiability as busy/out of office etc. private isn't an option still by looks of it.

No, have a 3UK SIM in it at the moment. Filled in the blanks but nothing has happened. Does MMS trigger from within 'camera' or 'Messages'?

Where does one get the ipcc file? Is the tethering option not going to appear by default?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 584 ✭✭✭atgate

No A2DP not working with MBP - the Mac sees the iPhone as a smartphone but not a source (I'm sure there is (will be) software to enable the mac to have a headphone profile).

No joy on tethering. Pairing works but no network connection is set up - I'm not enough if a network nerd to know why.....

Re No tethering on 02 - I'm getting kind of tired of paying massive roaming data charges too.

When does 02's exclusive contract for the iPhone expire?

Go into iTunes, hold shift while pressing restore in the ipod page, locate the gold file you downloaded. I was shocked myself it was that easy. Some people were reporting problems when they selected to update carrier file, if this comes up for you say no.

Don't think it's an O2 issue that I couldn't tether - more a iphone / mac issue and frankly I'm thick when it comes to network protocols - so it may actually work for someone else.

tethering will work, the settings just can't be downloaded to the phone with my version of itunes. people have already had it working with beta versions of 3.0 SW.

atgate have you installed the carrier settings? if so you'll have the tethering option under networks.

I did a alt+update (rather than restore) - only took 10 mins rather the 40 mins a restore would have taken. Had no carrier issues.

I didn't specifically download (or accept) carrier settings - although I have new MMS settings (with o2.ie refs) in the Cellular Data section. But no tethering references.

I have no tethering options offered either.

tethering won't work then, you need an ipcc file with the settings for o2 irl installed on the phone to enable it. they aren't available officially yet, but people have had it working in the past:

    http://www.jasonmadigan.com/posts/61-bluetooth-usb-tethering-mms-for-o2-ireland-with-iphone-os-3-0

however this file doesn't work with latest 3.0 version or latest itunes.

    copacetic, thanks for explanation!
Will try to test A2DP but my car head unit with A2DP support will be delivered next week :(

im just downloading the firmware now.

i've been reading on various forums that when im installing it, iTunes will ask me something about update carrier info??

what do i press here? i have a legit iPhone 3G on o2 and i dont mind losing my jailbrake.

do i select YES to update carrier info so that tethering and MMS will work?

    cheers
    adam

  • Subscribers Posts: 16,617 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

i didn't get asked to update carrier info. I'm not sure there is updated info for O2 IRL available yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,985 ✭✭✭big_moe

    ok thanks.

    does your mms work though?

i can live without tethering for the moment

yep, well sending at least works to vodafone irl, haven't tested sending one back. tested it earlier, you can add any picture or take a new one direct from the sms window, once you do it becomes an mms. cuala are you on O2 and is your account enabled?

MMS works from my O2 iPhone to another O2 phone (Blackberry).
And worked for the return too.

No, I have a 3UK SIM in the phone.

then you probably just need to get the settings for 3UK MMS and enter them. It won't work without the correct settings for your carrier.

I have them, copied from umpteen Nokias. Still won't work. Can you give me a breakdown of what you have filled in in the iPhone settings? Their wording isn't quite the same.

It all just worked for me, but here you go.

    settings>messages>mms on

    settings>network>cellular data>

    apn internet
    username
    password
    mmsc http://mmsc.mms.o2.ie/:8002
    MMS Proxy 62.40.32.40.8080
    MMS Max Messsage Size 307200
    MMS UA Prof URL

the only thing it might be is that your 3UK account is not MMS activated. I had to do that for O2 as does anyone with an iphone as they aren't mms activated by default.

Oh 'tis, begob. I have a monthly bundle of MMS with this account, since forever.

I notice a teensy bug in that the display claims to be 'searching' for the network for about 10 minutes after booting up even though it is logged on.

The 'Find my iPhone' feature is fantastic.

I tried to send mms to 3 friends without success :( BTW I'm not sure that they have enabled MMS.
I don't really care about that, but anyway...I have totally same settings as copacetic specified for Irish O2.
I'm on O2 iPhone tariff, never enabled or disabled MMS support..

as mentioned above you will have to get O2 to enable MMS for your account. there is a thread on talk2o2 specifically for it.
