Wait, is this a remake of that old Harvey Keitel movie of the same name?

Cage would be hard-pressed to do better than Keitel's performance in the original.

    That looks terrible.

I thought it looked ok and its directed by Werner Herzog so if anything this could be a return to form. When he's not phoning it in he can be a great actor, he does have an Oscar lets not forget

Poor old Nic.I used to really like him and he has been in some outstanding movies
    Wild at Heart
    Leaving Las Vegas
    Raising Arizona

Even Con Air was enjoyable for what it was.

But now he has just become a bad parody,Bangkok Dangerous,Ghost Rider etc but this could well be his most sareligous role to date.

The original BL is Keitels career highpoint IMO so there is no way this will be anything other than an abortion if he tries to draw anything from Harveys performance.

From what I remember he was okay in Matchstick Men, but I honestly can't think of a genuinely good film he's been in. I don't like him at all.

    Ghost Rider, awful, just awful

I liked it when he was a dramatic actor who could do action, rather than a terrible action movie star. Everything up to (and including) The Rock was fantastic, and then...

It's worrying that the best thing he's been in since then is a trailer for a movie that doesn't exist where he plays Fu Manchu.

Oh I get it.... He's on drugs!!

    Next joke please.

Supposedly this isn't a remake, it's yet another "Reimagining" with even more films planned: Bad Lieutenant: Port of call London etc.

Still looks like muck though it will never surpass The Wicker Man for both entertainment and fits of laughter!

Nic Cage has fallen into the same realm as Steven Seagal.

Ah I don't mind him. When he has a new film out I use my handy device, the Nic Cage hair test. If he's wearing a terrible wig then chances are the film will be utter muck and if his hair is somewhat natural lookign then chances are it can be quite decent, the recent Knowing being the perfect example of this.

Adaptation is the holy grail of Nicholas Cage movies, even though there is double the Cage. But then Charlie Kaufman is some sort of crazy acting demi-god - anyone involved in his films tends to excel.

    oh yeah

    Adaptation was good.

I was actually glad when they burnt him in The Wicker Man, I didn't feel any sympathy whatsoever. Face/Off wasn't too bad in fairness, but I think it's time he stopped...

That's not fair to old Ponytail!
Seagal makes movies for himself (he produces most of his own films) and his fans with similar themes all the time, with lower budgets than Cage would ever get, Cage is just an actor who does silly roles badly.

I liked Bringing Out The Dead. Maybe it was just for Ving Rhames and Tom Sizemore though.

Tom Sizemore was ****ing nuts in that movie.

Adaptation, The Weather Man, Lord of War, Face/Off, Con Air, The Rock, Leaving Las Vegas, Raising Arizona, Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

He is a damn good actor. Admittedly the last film might be stretching the credentials but he has proven himself and now he's just having fun because he's in a position to do whatever he wants.

Essentially he's a white Samuel Jackson.

Now I really want to see the two of them in a movie together.

Anyone ever see/hear the commentary for Windtalkers featuring Nic Cage and Christian Slater? They spend about 5 minutes talking about Cage's Ghost Rider Haloween costume. It's odd.

Don't forget John Dahls Red Rock West, Cage made loads of good films up to a point then it all went wrong - Captain Corellis Mandolin was when the rot really set in.

as he not won 2 oscars.

The problem with Cage is that Jerry Bruckheimer convinced him he was an action star, when really Bruckheimer can do that for anyone (Jake Gyllenhaal next). Any action stars output goes severly downhill the longer it continues and now he finds himself in low-budget, non-Bruckheimer action fare with unproven directors. National Treasure 1&2 have kept his career on emergency the last five years so he needs to either 1. stick to light adventure/comedy like it or 2. try get back in quality directors good books (Herzog is a good start). Hopefully he can do both but stop with the crappy action films, look what happened to Wesley Snipes!

He's not Steven Seagal though (but he might end up that way) because he's at least gave us The Rock, Face/Off, Leaving Las Vegas and sure National Treasure was a good laugh too

Never get old, always makes me laugh

He'll never live down Kiss of Death though

Yeah but atleast Cages movies get international releases and aren't mostly straight to DVD.

Is that the guy from Pimp My Ride in the trailer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

looks like it is indeed. xzibit.

personally, he went all pete tong when he did snake eyes, i was always a fan up to then, and he looks a lot like my dad (asiude from the bird hair!). :)

isn't he francis ford coppola's nephew?

i also heard a rumour that he's signed to do ghost rider 2, so it's only going to get worse. :(

Yep, they heard he likes films, so they put him in a film so he can watch a film with him in a film....dawg.

Yup. He changed his name to Cage from Coppola so people wouldn't think he was riding his uncle's coattails to success. I think he was credited as Nicholas Coppola in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

As for this latest remake Abel Ferrera (director of the original) is quoted as saying "I hope all involved burn in hell."

    So he's obviously giving it a thumbs-up.

Somebody on somethingawful already described the greatest Nicolas Cage movie never made. A reimagination of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde with Keanu Reeves as Jekyll and Cage as Hyde. Not in costume. Just being Nicolas Cage.

Thought he was good in Lord of War, 8mm & The Family Man...at least he didnt get the role of Superman few years back!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 441 ✭✭purple_hatstand

    The man is a joke.

He's incapable of subtlety and tends to dominate everything he's in.

He's the acting equivalent of someone who TYPES IN CAPITALS ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!

Most of the directors he's worked with have obviously encouraged this side of him (Bay, Woo, De Palma etc...) for their own horrible reasons - only Scorcese, Figgis and Scott have managed to get anything like a real character out of a Cage performance but unfortunately, 'Matchstick Men' and 'Bringing Out The Dead' are not great. Lynch and Jonze made a virtue of his madcappery but, I repeat...

    ...the man is a joke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,454 ✭✭✭weemcd

Clicked on this thread to absolutly agree but that trailer is awesome!

In saying that, bar con air, leaving las vegas and lord of war, I despise nic cage, he just annóys the absolute **** out of me.

ps. never seen the wickerman but those clips are horrific (in the terrible acting sense, not disturbing in a scary way)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,186 ✭✭✭davej

Birdy was also a very good movie...

Also Leaving Las Vegas, Adaptation, and as 'Sailor' in Wild at Heart..

That last one, 'knowing', was terrible.

Birdy was a classic. Moonstruck,Peggy Sue got married and Rumblefish were movies that I would remember him for. He could certainly act back then but the dollar sign obviously caught him and is now known for all the wrong reasons ie bad roles.

Im about 10 times more disapointed with Herzog then I am over Cage. Dont rate Cage at all.

Never seen him acting well/in a good film except one decent enough kinda noirish thriller that was on TV one night, called Red River Rock or something like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,295 ✭✭✭✭Duggy747

    Oh boy!

Looks like something you'd see late at night on Bravo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,748 ✭✭✭tony1kenobi

Nic Cage is the Michael Owen of Hollywood. You keep thinking there might be something there......then you remember that with all his skill he is still playing Doncaster.....badly.

Red Rock West? With Dennis Hopper during that spell in the mid-nineties when he was actually good again?

I'm more worried about Werner Herzog. Dude, you made great films, what are you doing working with a man who, in all likelihood, will be in a bear suit by the end of this film.
