Alright, just a quick question or two for anyone who bothers to read,

I'm doing the leaving at the moment and I can't decide whether to put down Trinity or DCU. I'm just wondering what the craic is like on the campus and in the courses(computer courses in particular) because I've heard many stories of how the college is boring and dull etc which I find to be quite off putting. Is there much parties or anything along those lines for the average joe soap?? I know theres more to college then parties and stuff but still......

Also while I'm here, are most the computer courses mainly sausage fests or is there a good mix gender wise? :pac::pac:
    Cheers for any replies!

How you could even contemplate going to DCU is beyond me.

We have the Pav. They have some place called the "Hub", but from what I gather it's full of people in tracksuits and conversations tend to revolve around the latest episode of Britain's Got Talent.

On paper, a degree from Trinity will look better than a degree from DCU or so I'm told.

Dan, I'm in the same position as you (Kinda).

However, I have spent enough time sponging around on this Board to know to disregard almost everything Cantab. says.

    Just a wee tip.

He takes his TCD very seriously.

Yes there are parties. Yes there are societies. Yes there are sports clubs. There are nights out, mystery tours, balls (not related to the sausage fest you're referring to... well most of them), and lots and lots of fun.

CS iirc has a high number of male to females, similar to engineering, but all that'll mean is that you'll have to look further afield. Besides, scoring someone in the class you're in has caused a lot of trouble for people in the past!

And finally, yes there are people who are stuck up their own arse in college, but these are greatly in the minority and in a college of 15,000 students and around 10,000 undergraduates you'll find more than enough people like you.

    Science, of some description.

This week is making me think I might not make common entry :(

    Phys/Chem of Advanced Materials maybe?

Trinity's location is also much better than that of DCU. Buses and trains close by as well as the city.

True, but that also has its negatives....I know for sure I would spend more time in the pubs/gaming cafes than in college!

TCD CS is a sausage fest. 2 wimminz in the Freshmen years.

    TCD > DCU though.

    Loads goes on anywho.

Just to clear things up, OP, they whole CS course isn't full of gay people. You'll find plenty of people in there such as yourself. Don't worry about the boy:girl ratio, it shouldn't have any baring on choosing a course! With all courses you'll become good friends with (most/some of) your class mates, male or female. IIRC, a lot of people don't go to College to get a GF or whatever.
Somebody already mentioned the awkwardness of going out with somebody in your class anyway.....

Good luck with the LC btw.

    U.

As a matter of interest, will you fund such activities yourself, or are you hoping for a grant to see you through?

I know the OP was sorta joking, but it bugs the suit out of me when the likes of that happens. I think it calls for a separate thread

Yes, I have my suspicions too. A separate thread would be fine, but I'm sure I can keep my comments relevant to the topic involved.

Go to DCU in my opinion. Definitely better craic. Actually any college i've been to has more life than Trinity.

I don't think there is anything I could apply for grant wise so I guess it will either be me or my parents. And I was being sarcastic to an extent, though I probably will do it a bit, you know yourself. :pac:

Dunno where you've been hearing that college is dull. Trinity has something like 100 societies (or more maybe), there is simply no way to be bored unless you're lazy and never leave your house.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,488 ✭✭✭mathew

I had a similar dilema in 6th year (between UCD and Trinity)
I chose Trinity because its in town, the campus has much more of a 'campus feel' to it. Because its a small campus you get to know a lot of people in different faculties.
Hearing from frineds who when to UCD, theyre having a great time, and dont regret their decision, but because of the size of the campus theyre much more confined to thier own faculty.

In my oppinion Trinity is great craic, there are loads of societies and sports clubs and a really great bunch of people. Your also on the doorstep of the city which is really cool.
Very handy for meeting on campus before going out at night. Theres always somewhere different to go for lunch or dinner. You have hundreds of shops only a few minutes away. If you need to pick up something, you can get to O'Connell st and back if you have an hours gap between lectures.

Overall: very convinient, great college atmosphere, good craic and an amazing group of people.

yeah it has a lot going on but personally i've found that if you go to somewhere like Maynooth, for example, it's more fun, the people are better craic, more laid back atmosphere.

No you wont, you'll do well to afford lunch and a Pav friday

Coleslaw and chips in the Pav (two birds with one stone) = €2.50
    + (4 Bavaria = €8)x2 = €16

    _________
    €18.50

I am sure that Maynooth has a more laid-back atmosphere than Trinity. And for good reason.

Ultimately you should choose a university based on academic quality, it is then your job to make friends there and develop yourself as an adult person.

You can't take the cash in hand, which could mean not having to hold down a job in college. Also, you'd probably rent somewhere nicer then in trinity, nearby, with the money they give you.

Unless you've gone to both colleges, I don't see how you can say that. I've visited maynooth several times, and it's always seems like a barren wasteland with no atmosphere, that doesn't mean its like that all the time.

I was pretty sure if you take the money, you only get half of what the rent is worth.

I don't know if it's half, but it is less. That said, Trinity college accommodation costs haven't been coming down but rather increasing. There is now quite a large difference between what you pay in trinity vs what you'd pay in the surrounding area.

You do. You get 2215 paid in 3 instalments, one in December, one in March and one in June.

If you take rooms you still have to pay for utilities.

Living at home I get free food, washing done for me and free utilities.

The way I see it is they pay me to live at home or I pay them to live in college.
I will take rooms for at least one year of my five but not next year.

It's not that strange, doing a family wash makes more sense than everyone washing their own stuff. We do a conveyor belt system, I'm put on ironing duty. Clumsiest person in the house wields a scorching hot, streamy hunk of metal. No skin grafts just yet.

But there's no way chore-sharing, half the cost of accoms and free food is motivation to stay home.

Pfft I get my washing done for me too. I don't see the big deal, my mam would be washing my brothers stuff, my dads stuff, and her stuff. I don't see why she'd turn around and tell me to **** off she's not washing mine while she's at it

Maybe your parent(s) didn't like you or something

Or maybe Pet has a sense of self-respect. Seriously folks, help out with the washing. Your mammy will love you for it.

I think its more the fact that the horrors of having to do one's own washing are an incentive to refuse free accommodation away from one's parents.

Yeah, people tend to build it up like its going to be absolutely A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! but its not. To put it blunt. Its very confusing I found it! The second you walk in all you see is like a mini market place with LOTS of stalls and everyone from every society trying to get you to join!

Piece of advice, dont join because the person says you should! The chances are, you'll probably join almost ALL the societies, and realise you can only go to one of them. and so there you've wasted MUCHOS amount of money. (some society charges 6e membership fee and then for every event you go to, they charge 2-5e!)

I could go on a rant about this all day! :pac: So i'll stop here.

And about choosing DCU or Trinity with regards to social life, I know all that convient crap etc etc being in town etc etc. but my sister goes to DCU and I go trinity, and if we were to compare our first year in college, her first year in DCU was EPIC!

    "can't ask for anything better!"

Social life is much better I would say in DCU. Trinity social nights aren't bad, but it's very much "the same", nothing special. every week, pretty much the same places. I found that after about a month or two of partying, I got bored of it pretty quickly. And me being pretty involved with college in first year! Whereas DCU, they have lots of fun events and themed and when I say themed I MEAN THEMED (like everyone dresses up!...unlike some trinity nights..)

Weird, as my sister and I were REALLY involved with the SU in our first year, so when we compare, its pretty fair.

(But then again, your choice in subject/course has alot to do with social life aswell! :D)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 484 ✭✭brownacid

I realise this is a bit off topic but this was the most fitting place to put it seeing as I can't make my own threads. Any one have any idea what date we are back on, had a look in the college calender and it says nothing, and had a look on the local pages too....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,488 ✭✭✭mathew

SU Ents are shít, generally your bog standard cheap drinks in a crap nightclub type affairs, but they're by no means the only Trinity social nights.
