Does anyone know when this is coming out here? The Irish Apple Store site doesn't list a price or date.

Should be soon, I was talking to my local o2 shop and they said early July.
Very interested in the ability to remotely delete/ find when lost facility.

I heard official date of Release date is soon too, I wanted to know about it coming and being available for RTG customers on 02! Emailed 02 and they could tell me nothing. I wasn't half disappointed! :) Can't wait, System 3.0 is the business!

uk date is 19th, it's believed we are one of the 6 countries mentioned to get it on the 26th.

Based on the fact that we weren't on the slides for July or August shown here this seems reasonable.

I heard it's very glitchy though. It's a fantastic looking device though. I think Apple still have the upper hand with the App Store, there are so many great Apps for the iPhone.

Oh OK. I'll look out for it when the stream of the event is up.

What is the price going to be?

This is what i have read about the UK price plan for existing customers

Got an iPhone 3G in the UK? Want to upgrade to a whizzy new iPhone 3GS on 19th June? Well, you can, but there's a cost beyond that of the handset itself.

Specifically, you'll have to pay O2 to end your existing contract before they'll let you sign up to a new one.

O2 revealed the news on its official Twitter feed, telling people that how much they have to pay will depend on how long they have left on their existing contract.

"The early upgrade cost is likely to be monthly cost x months left on your contract, but specifics may vary slightly," they explained.

What that would mean is if you bought an iPhone 3G when it went on sale last July, on a £35 18-month contract, you'll have to pay more than £200 to end it six months early, and that's before the actual cost of buying the new iPhone 3GS.

Which is? In a separate tweet, O2 revealed that the iPhone 3GS 16GB will cost up to £184.98 depending which tariff you sign up to, and the 32GB model will cost up to £274.23. Those highest prices relate to the 18-month £29.38 and £34.26 tariffs, another tweet explained.

In short, the operator is telling its keenest iPhone customers that they'll have to pay more than £385 to get a 16GB iPhone 3GS this month, and more than £475 to get the 32GB model.

Sorry O2, but what's changed since last summer, when first-gen iPhone owners were allowed to switch to the 3G version without paying to cancel their contract?

It's the change in policy we don't understand. And it's not even like iPhone owners are being disloyal - they're signing up to another lengthy contract with O2!

Not cool. Not cool at all. If another UK operator is also selling the 3GS come Christmas, we can see a number of disgruntled early adopters churning from O2 as a result of this.

O2 Ireland operate a fair bit differently to O2 UK, so I don't think you can read too much into UK plans.

That being said, I think they'll treat it like any other phone. If you are eligible for an upgrade, you get a subsidised price, if you're not, you don't. That won't stop people complaining though.

That's true... O2 IRL charge a hell of a lot more!

I think you can be sure that it will be more expensive with less service than the UK. High ARPUs have to be maintained!

Anyone thinking of opting for a 8gb 3g will need to work fast, word is the 8gb is phased out once the current stock is gone.

O2 in the process up updating the website. Now with two iphone links but one is blank and one with firefly.

Debating whether or not to pay off my last 5 months with vodafone and grab one of these. Really cannot decide.

The iPhone 3G looks blank, but if you move the cursor around you can see a link in there, and it pops up a notification form (incomplete). I assume you fill it in and they'll inform you when the phone is available... Looking forward to seeing prices

Will this release bring down the prices of the iphone overall? I was planning on getting an ipod touch but if this release means a decent price drop I might hold off for a bit.

    Error 404 reported here.

Can't make up my mind whether or not to ditch Vodafone and grab one of these. Will cost me about €100 to leave Vodafone.

I had a look around the source of the page mentioned by Stee and found this image. No info on price or availability, I'm afraid.

And here's the form that should appear in the popup. Looks like there will be no info on the new iPhone for a while.

Yikes - O2 Uk prices look expensive - does anybody know if they have jumped much from the 3G prices?

Theres a text overlay on the image, you can see it if you select all. Still the prices for the old one though!

They will definitely be keeping an 8GB 3G model. See here (bottom of page): http://www.apple.com/ie/iphone/iphone-3g-s/index.html

seems very unlikely since Apple announced the 8G 3G as the cheaper part of the range yesterday, implying it will be kept on for the time being at least.

It sold out on day 1, mostly because they got a pitiful amount of stock: not more than 3 or 4 per store, depending on location. They had a waiting list that took months to clear and stock levels didn't normalise until around September of 2008. O2 claim they've learned their lesson and such a scenario won't happen again, but that remains to be seen.

Unless its a free or low cost upgrade, I cant justify upgrading from the 16gb 3G. The new model just doesnt have that much extra appeal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,894 ✭✭✭TinCool

The OS 3.0 has more appeal for me than opting for a 3GS, plus the OS 3.0 is free. I'm quite happy with my 16GB 3G model.

Ireland appears as one of the countries listed in the keynote address where the iPhone 3gs will be released on the 26th. I would like to know if O2 are ready to roll out MMS and tethering on the release date.

thanks. Is there any way i can find out if the iphone 3g sold out within 48hrs of its release in Belgium?? Really want to know as ill be there 4 days after its released and am wondering if its likely they will have stock in any of the shops?

Hi all, I am as much in the dark as you are. I hope to have some information for you in the next 48 hours but until then everything said about the release date, prices and upgrade proceedure is all speculation. I will assume that we will not be following the same model as the UK though.

Now is a good opportunity for O2 to redeem the negative press received when the iPhone originally launched with really high price plans when compared to O2 UK. We are in a recession afterall...

Presumably when 3.0 software is launched the pricing for MMS will mirror other O2 price plans?

Do you think that since current iphone 3g customers are in contract,
(many of which will not pay the penalty to upgrade) that the stock of iphone 3gs will last more that 24hrs this time around?Or is it likely we will see stock shortages similar to last time? Thanks

The 8GB model is an entry model. Very cheap in the US, at least. $99.

How dumb was O2's plan? Who came up with that? All they have to do is allow people to keep their contract and add on an 18 month onto the end of it. Thats the same thing.

    Sounds better.

( I supposed they are subsidising the cost of the phone in the monthly payments, so it has to be something like that. Both make the same money. One sounds a lot better).

I wonder why the delay on MMS? It should just use the existing O2 MMSC, unless Apple have made a special iPhone one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,441 ✭✭✭✭jesus_thats_gre

The contract lark is complete bollox. Can't believe they could be so stupid!

I'm eligible for an upgrade - anyone know whether the iPhone 3GS will be covered within this or not?

And would it be conditional on me signing up to one of the iPhone price plans?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,382 ✭✭✭O2_Daryll

MMS should be work dev's are already reporting its success. Pricing at the mo is 25c per text. I dunno if this is changing though.

I don't know what the deal is with the rants about contracts are all about we have said nothing about contracts affecting you buying the iPhone 3Gs.

well, o2 uk have said that you will have to buy your way out of your current contract if you want to get the 3gs on a new contract , and considering we always get a worse deal than o2 uk, i can see why people think this..

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,558 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dades

Methinks for some reason people still think contracts aren't binding when associated with mobile phones.

They bitch about having to sign one, and bitch some more when they can't break it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,382 ✭✭✭O2_Daryll

I don't think we would allow you to do that in the first place. All indications are that we will be sticking to our current upgrade rules with regard to the iPhone. So you either have one or you don't. Most people that have been using an iPhone for the past 12 months shoul dnot have any problem in this regard and their upgrades should be imminent.

  • Subscribers Posts: 16,616 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

Has to be expected in a vacuum Daryll. The phone announcement has been common knowledge for months now, O2 Irl should have had their ducks in a row. Apple announced the phone will be available here on the 26th but O2 haven't confirmed that and have absolutely no details on anything available even now, 24hrs later. Thats pretty poor imo. You need to kick some ass up the line!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,056 ✭✭✭maggy_thatcher

Given that tethering requires "carrier support", I assume that buying an unlocked version (from Italy/Belgium) and using it on 3 won't work (at least that particular feature)?

I'm not switching (back) to O2 until they stop with the fleecing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,942 ✭✭✭Danbo!

Ive been following this closely all over the web on different forums and I must say its hilarious the way people are acting. Giving out that they have 6/12 months left on their contract and AT&T and o2 UK are gonna charge them more to get an iphone 3GS. Pulling the whole 'Im a loyal customer, where is my reward?' Your reward was a subsidised handset at the start of the contract in exhange for 18 months (or 2 years in the US) of loyal custom. You knew that when you began the contract, chances are its that handset for 18 months!! Bleedin whiners!

I'll be buying a 16Gb 3GS when I can get my hands on one (currently never had an iphone), and I know that I wont be able to upgrade til circa Dec 2010. Chances are though, fanboy-ness will take over and i'll be on the Talk2o2 forums this time next year calling for Darylls head on a plate.

OT: Daryll, do you have to be an o2 customer to join the forum? I tried before to ask a few questions but I needed to add my mobile number, which isnt an o2 one (yet)

  • Subscribers Posts: 16,616 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

you do need to be an o2 customer to use the forum.
