I've always liked the luck of these especially restored with the top off.

    fj40_68-f.jpg
I'm thinking of changing car soon and I would love to get one of these as my everyday car/ do-er upper.

Does anyone know if they are easy to get in Ireland? how much should I expect to pay? what size are the engines in these? is there anything to watch out for?

Thanks in advance for any help/advise.

This is a car i know a bit about, they changed the model number a few over the years but it still stayed the same beast, still common as muck in Australia, the only thing that goes wrong with them is the body, the sills rust out like you would not belive but any pannel on them is available in fiberglass, other than that just you cant kill these things.

I think i saw a BJ40 for sale on classiccar.ie for 5 grand on the weekend, a late 70's short wheel based green thing that looked in very good nick, i would own one again in a second, hope this helps.

    Anthony.

Rust killed 'em all over here, last one I saw was dying in a field some time ago. Unfortunately they shared the same problems with the rust bug as other seventies cars.

Great vehicle though and unbelievably popular over in Oz as the poster above says. But justifiably so...

Two years ago a mate took one from a quarry in Dublin, it had been sitting there the last 5 or more years, was in an awful state, as already mentioned, rusted to hell. Had a 3 litre 24 volt diesel in it.
i got a call to get it started, mate didn't know it needed two battery's. Anyway long story short she fired up after 20 minutes of fetling the fuel system. Hell of a truck.
The fracker sold it to a couple of heads and it's now burnt out in a forest, damn shame.
In the Irish classics this month there are 3 for sale, in Tipp. Case of buy one get two free. Guy's looking for a grand for the three of them.
I'll pm you his number later if you like.

    That's really great value.

Hobochris, you won't find cheaper then that for a BJ40 needing restoration. Last year rough ones were selling for around €2,000 (excluding the two additional donors mentioned). If I hadn't my eye on something even better I'd have them in a second.

Another thing to watch out for is brake problems as most of these were used by farmers with unbraked trailers at some point (well mine was anyway ).

If your looking for a rust free example try: www.tradecarview.com some low mileage and unrestored beauties on there. Going to cost about €7,000 to your door.

I think they're near me in Tipp, wants €3000 though. If I wasn't a pure Land Rover man, one of those would be the next choice.

I always admired the FJ40....thought many times about getting one when i was in oz....many of them are now converted to LPG.

I would look at the 70 series...more pratical and less of a headache...

    BJ70V.jpg

or u could go for the fj40s recent incarnation...(bit more money though :) )
The FJ Cruiser.....saw only one ever in the flesh...beautiful

Thanks everyone, I think its the diesel model I'm gonna go for if i can find one that is RHD.

AÆ, thanks for the suggestions, But I'm set on the look of the fj/bj 40. small, rugged, and the roof comes off for the two days of summer we get each year.

Not only that but I'd want to make sure the 30 year rule applies.. Don't wanna be paying through the teeth for having a 3 or 4 litre engine.

You can get the 70 series model with a removable roof and the engine sizes are smaller but...
If i was looking for a clean fj40/bj40 (or even a fj45) i would look into importing one from oz. I dont know what expense that would entail but there are loads of old landcruisers which have been restored.

this is a good classified oz site... www.carsales.com.au

Or from Japan: they have a few fjs about 4000 euro.

I was thinking about this but wasn't sure about cost of importing.

Can anyone give me a rough indication of what import costs would be?

    and whats involved?

    CarShows057-1.jpg?t=1245082062

I took this photo at the Trim vintage show a couple of years ago
and there was another at the Inistioge vintage show in kilkenny last year, it was fitted up as a fire tender and had been on duty from 1982- 2006. Still owned by Kilkenny Fire Brigade, it was useful for dealing with Kilkenny's narrow streets

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,033 ✭✭✭Silvera

I've seen that red one at shows too. There is also a blue original Irish-reg SWB model doing the classic show circuit.

I too would love a restored SWB model...with removable top.
Does anybody recall the resto they did on 'Pimp My Ride' of a yellow SWB version? It was the only PMR resto that I really liked so far. It looked the business!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 92 ✭✭123 man

thanks for that il look him up. i had a look at some in japan lovely jeep small money love to get a red one in you have some jeep then.

All you Landcruiser fans. I have 2 BJ 40's I've decided to let go to a good home. One roughly an '81. the other around '76. Started working on one but don't have the time. Apart from a front propshaft and 2 wheels, they are complete (except for the bits missing from rust). They were found in a ditch on a farm near Carlow, been lying there for about 5 years. Got them home, put in 2 batteries and a bit of diesel and the '76 fired up and drove through all the gears. Haven't tried the other one. Anyone interested in making an offer can e-mail me at dinks@live.com

There is at least 1 and possible 2 BJs in a field, well more of a car graveyard, just outside Enniscorthy along with all kinds of other stuff plus even a few MGs.

Complete bodies can be ordered from a company called OZ East who make them in fibreglass, will gelcoat it the colour you want and ship it to Ireland for very reasonable money. All you have to do is fit to your chassis, fit windows and wiring and you're off. The rest of these trucks is bullet proof

    3. running with some rust but very very scarce
