    Hey

When I try to connect to the wireless network it just stays stuck "acquiring network address", it stays like this infinitely, when i click on the network connection status it still shows up as sending and receiving packets.

There are two other computers who are connected to the wireless network no problem, I've tried restarting the router, restarting my computer, repairing the connection on my computer and everything else I can think of but having zero results.

By the way the network is password protected but I have entered the correct password.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

Did u check to see if there is a mac filter as in are the other two computers mac addresses logged and not urs... if so and the router is using mac filtering then u need to add your computers mac address to the router address table...

look to this site for steps... http://www.instructables.com/id/Wireless-Router-Security/

this is just one possible cause... im sure there are many that need to be ruled out..

There is no mac filter... thanks for the reply though.

also check if you are setup to automatically acquire an IP address. if you've brought home a work laptop then you might have a static ip

Was about to say that too, make sure it's set to DHCP(get an IP from router), if that doesn't work try giving it a static IP.

It was set to automaticallly get an ip.

I should of mentioned that I have never had a problem like this, and have been connecting to the same network through the same router for the past two years. I literally just disconnected from the network as pages stopped loading and now I can not reconnect it seems.

What static ip should I use?

Thanks again for the replies so far.

    ok,
lets start with a few basics.
you didnt accidentally turn your wifi card off?
can you connect if you play an ethernet cable in it?
can you connect to the router? 192.168.x.x (whatever you have it set up as)

baby steps and we'll take it from there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 490 ✭✭Pablod

what type of router are you connecting to?
    Eircom Netopia ot Netgear etc....??
Could you be possibly using a Static IP address and maybe some other wireless device is is using that address?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,924 ✭✭✭shoutman

now it seems that when I have ipaddress and dns to be btaines automatically it just goes as 0.0.0.0.0 etc.

and nope I don't seem to be connecting to the router.....

I'll post again in the morning when I can find out if I can connect using ethernet cable.

Thanks for all the help so far.

I won't be able to connect using an ethernet cable till tommorrow so I guess I'll have to wait till tommorrow to find that out.

i think sometimes if you have your computer on before u switch on ur router.. that it has an effect when connecting... that is to say that it is better to have your computer on and set up to automaticallly connect locate a hub and then switch on your w- router.

simplistic i know but hey worth a shot..

Right so I'm currently connected to the net via the ethernet cable, so that rules that out.
The router is a netgear wireless router. I can now connect to the router, but it seems to only work when i'm online via the ethernet cable (which is running from the router).

The thing I don't get it is, before the ip address and dns server were obtained automatically I never had a problem, but now when they look to obtain them the addresses always come back as a string of zeros, ie 00.00.00.00

I tried using static ip addresses and it appears to be connected when I do (it says it is connected) however it does not load any webpages so essentially it's still offline.

    Thanks again for the help.

Is your laptop connection ok in other wireless situations? Or could you try it in one?

Have you added any wireless gizmos lately that might be interferring? TV senders can be deadly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 490 ✭✭Pablod

These might sound like small simple things but check them first

Go to your network connections -
    1) Check that your Wireless is Enalbed
(if you right click on the wireless connection and Enabled is available to be selected, then it could be disabled)

    2) Staying in Network Connections -
Right Click on the Wireless Connection and go to Properties.
If your IP & DNS are set to Auto Obtain
In the "aternative config" tab Just make sure this is also set to Auto Obtain IP
Int the wireless Networks Tab do you let Windows configure your wireless network settings?

    3) if you do a search for wireless networks does your laptop see the router in a list to select from.

    Alternatively - you can try
When you are connected by ethernet, see what your IP and DNS adresses are! make a note of them and apply them as your static wireless settings.

None of the above work, I do not have any other way of testing of my wireless connection is working. I have nothing nearby that I think would interrupt the wireless as I'm currently using another laptop from the same position as my laptop which is not working.

I have put in static ip address subnet mask etc that I got from when my computer was connected via entranet cable, It says it is connected to the network but when I go to load a webpage it says that the webpage is not available.

I'm still stumped as to why it automatically obtains 0.0.0.0 as an ip address when i have it on the automatically optain setting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,940 ✭✭✭dingding

    Had a similar problem later.

Basically there are a few different wireless speeds. If the laptop is old it may be "B", if the router is newer it may be set at "G"

Try and set the router at either "B" or both and see if the laptop is able to connect. If you have a "B" laptop connecting to a "G" network, it may look OK ask for password, exchange packets etc, but you won't get an IP address and you won't be able to connect.

    Hope this helps.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,924 ✭✭✭shoutman

Could the router all of a sudden change from B to G?

As I've said I have been using the router for a while without any problem, and all of a sudden this happened.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 490 ✭✭Pablod

I don't have the netgear one, but does your router have a reset option
    (like reset to factory settings)
normally it would be a pin size button located on the back of the router, you need a pin or tip of pen to push it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,940 ✭✭✭dingding

    Hi OP,

Did the laptop ever connect successfully to the internet using this router.

If it did not, the B/G setting could be a possibility.

If it did connect and does not anymore, then it is unlikely to be a hardware issue as discussed above.

Alternatively a virus checker could be causing a problem. I saw a case recently where a colleague purchased a machine that had a copy of Norton I think. The license had expired and it stopped all internet web traffic.

I had to download a special Norton tool to remove it. It would not let you remove the program.

My laptop connected via this router to the same network for the past few months, there is no reason that I can think of as to why it would suddenly just stop working.

Can anyone think why the automatic ip address would suddenly be 0.0.0.0 etc I think finding a solution to this problem could help... I originally thought it was a wireless issue with my laptop but I don't know, should I just bring it into a shop and ask them? I don't want to be left with a bill with them saying there is nothing wrong with your laptop and its something you have to sort out....

Are you using Vista? - It could be an update.
    What router/wireless router you using?

Nope using XP and its a netgear router.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,450 Mod ✭✭✭✭dub45

Have you tried turning off the firewall?

Surely therer is some wireless point nearby that you could bring it to?

Another alternative is to try and reset the router completely (via the little pinhole at the back) just in case you have unwittingly hit a setting or something like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,924 ✭✭✭shoutman

I'll do the pinhole thing and if that fails I'll find a wireless place to give it a go.

    Thanks again for everyone's advice.

If you really wanted to see what going on you could install Wireshark and start monitoring DHCP requests/acks on the line and see exactly what is going on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,940 ✭✭✭dingding

If you are not getting an IP address, go start, run, cmd

And when the black box comes up type ipconfig

    and then type ipconfig/renew

This should give an error indicating the ip address and possibly why it won't renew.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,924 ✭✭✭shoutman

I got that program webmonkey, I don't know what to do with it though, do I install it then post the results?
ding ding I did that and it said that it could not connect the dhcp server. I googled this and it brought me to a microsoft site on how to reset tcp/ip, I've just got their program that does it automatically for you and just waiting to restart computer now to see if it worked.

edit: even after that ip address and subnet mask still set to 0.0.0.0

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 112 ✭✭wobzilla

sometimes if you have your ethernet network enabled, the wireless network will fail to get an address. try disabling your, ethernet. also when you're setting up a static ip address, you have to enter the default gateway (the ip adress of the router eg. 192.168.1.254 for netopia routers), and the dns server adresses.(if you're on eircom these are 213.94.190.194 and 213.94.190.236).
oh and the subnet mask is usually 255.255.255.0

    Ok - yep install it.

Click Capture on the menu bar, select Options.
Select your wireless card in the Interface list.

    (Ensure your ethernet plugged out)

    In display options
    - Tick 'Update list of packets in realtime'

    Then click start.

In the filter, type in bootp and press enter.

    Now go and do
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

on command prompt and copy what you see in here. (You can click file->export plain text)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,924 ✭✭✭shoutman

when I try the iconfig /release it says ip address for adapter wireless network connection has already been released.

and when I try ipconfig /renew it still says an error occurred while renewing interface wireless network connection : unable to contact your dhcp server. Request has timed out.

    Here's the wireshark thing....

Ok you sending a DHCP discover which is good but the router isn't responding what so ever to it.

Have you reset the router already? - have you another laptop around you could try connect to router with?

I've only skimmed over it but it looks like a lot of Authentication messages - are you even getting connected to the wifi in first place I wonder.

I'm posting from my mothers laptop which is connected via the router no bother.
I've reset the router, I've unpowered the router and repowered it and still no difference.

Do you think my wifi card could be fried or something like that? I do think my laptop has a problem wtih overheating, it's quite old and crap, that lack of cash/job means that I can't replace it.

Ok, well least we know it down to the PC so.

It could be a driver problem - If I were you I'd remove the wifi card from device manager in my computer and reboot, let itself re install and see what happens.

The fact that it is working over ethernet means it more on wifi side -

Alteratively, to test, you could just enter a static IP, gateway, DNS addresses and see if that connects fine.

I tried the static ip but no good results will do the other thing you suggested, thanks so much for the help.

Webmonkey you are an absolute beauty, back up and running now.

Thanks so much for everyone who offered advice on this problem.

You saved me buying a new laptop which I can not afford.

    Much appreciated.

    Good evening folks

May seem a bit like Groundhog Day, but here goes....
I have a desktop PC with a wireless dongle that "used" to be OK until a couple of days ago. Basically I moved it downstairs (as it happens, a bit further away from the wireless router, if that has any bearing on the problem).
Anyway, I updated some software on the PC last night (windows updates mostly), downloaded AVG and installed....everything OK so far.
All of a sudden, I've no Internet connection. Similar to the previous thread, I can see the router via the dongle console so it's making a connection to it, but no outside connection.
I've set to "obtain IP address automatically", no joy. (Incidentally, from this machine connected to the same router, all is hunky dory - on this one, the Default Gateway has the same IP address as the router; the IP address differs only in the last digit).
Tried giving the desktop PC an IP address similar to above, incrementing by 1 on the IP address, no joy.
If I try to disable/re-enable the wireless connection, it hangs on the "Renewing your IP address" part.....and then hangs.....and then tells me to contact my Tech Support ! So it doesn't seem to be picking up an IP address, even though when I checked on the router console, it's set to assign one to connected devices...

I've been at this over the weekend and I'm lost at this stage....Any ideas folks ? Much appreciated !

Please don't be reviving old threads.

My guess is that your avg update is the culprit. Try turning off your firewall and see what happens.

It's not "revived" as such - it happens to be the most similar thread to the issue I am facing....should I start another identical one ?

At the moment I'm not at my PC but will check later on this arvo.

Anyway, what Firewall are you referring to - the Windows one or the AVG one ? I can see why you might suggest that AVG is the problem, but it actually *did* work for a while after I installed the latest free version of AVG. Than BAM! Gone...

I've also seen on other forums a suggestion of plugging in the wireless dongle *after* the PC has booted up. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me but apparently it has an effect and works for some.

Should I be hardcoding an IP address or set it to obtain automatically anyway ? That works for my laptop...It has an address of '.3' as last part of the address and it picks it up from the router.

The other question I have is about the dongle itself. I know these aren't generally as powerful or optimal as a plug-in device. It's something I picked up from dabs.ie or similar for about €20, and is about the size of a USB key. Could it just be too far from the router ? That said, I brought the router downstairs and plugged in, and that still didn't make a whole lot of difference...

    Cheers

Oh, and the other thing was...when I reboot the PC and try to connect to the internet, I'm getting prompted to select my preferred dial-up ISP. It should be picking up the wireless option, I assume ??
